The history of the rope bed is tightly woven with the history of the mattress and the four-poster bed. Most of the four-poster beds were rope beds. I"m offering this beautiful Antique Birdseye Maple Field Bed resized to standard queen. The bed posts and cross rails are from the 1820's. The headboard and side rails were made to match the posts by the American Antique Bed Company of New Bedford. Ma. The bed features mortise and tenon joinery and a hand rubbed finish. The bed is shown with a standard queen box spring and mattress. The height of the posts are 61 inches high. The height to the top of the rail is 21 inches. Late 1800's Rope Bed We found this bed at a estate sale. The rail's screw. And counter screw into both the headboard, and footboard It is in good shape for it's age. There are some cracking of the wood from age, and scratches which would be expected. I took a lot of pictures so that you can see the detail. Bed comes with the footboard. Head board, rope, and two rails. The headboard, and footboard have small metal wheels. I used a bathroom scale to weigh each piece there are four. Head and foot board which are 45lb ea and two rails which weighed 20 lb's ea I figure the total weight to be around 130 lbs The Headboard and footboards are 56" wide. Antique 1800's Cannon Ball Rope Bed Very early 1800's antique rope bed, I believe made of maple wood. With cannon ball posts. The bed is very sturdy and is in very good condition. It appears to be handmade, with excellent craftsmanship, however, it is very old, and does have scuffs, scratches, and cracks typical of antique post beds of this age. All pieces of the bed, including the head board, foot board, and two rails are original. The bed can be put together and also taken apart very easily, and the frame has multiple holes ready for roping. A great piece for any situation.

Beautiful Handmade Queen Cherry Wood Rope Bed from Cherry Creek. NY. It was modified to add a foot to accommodate taller people. See#8 photo) It was made in the late 1800's. Owned by my Great Grandmother Louise Parsons. Her father was the first physician in the Forestville NY area. It is Colonial style. There are some cracks and scuffs. But the bed is structurally sound. It measures 56" long x 20" wide x 54" high. The height of the seat with 1" boards attached would be 22" It does not have any boards attached for the seat at the present time. This is a excellent. Rare Southern hand made rope bed headboard and footboard from the 18th or early 19th century. It is maple or fruitwood and measures 39" wide and 45' tall for the headboard and 39" wide and 38" tall for the footboard. The bed was purchased from a reputable, well-known appraiser and auctioneer(associated with Antiques Roadshow) by me for my grandson. However, he has been given a bed(a fire engine! so now I am selling this one. It is simply a great Southern piece. The bed is in very good to excellent condition- no wobbles and very sturdy. There is one small place of damage on the backside of the headboard(see photo#10) which could be easily repaired. I showed it to a local repairer/restorer who said it was an easy fix. Here is a true antique Jenny Lind style spool full size bed. It is a completely handmade turned spool bed. I believe it is maple. It measures 41 tall inch posts, bed measures 76 by 50 on the outside frame and 70 by 44 on the inside. All the rope knots are there. It takes 2 people to put the bed together. The unusual double threaded rail posts are beautiful. Its in excellent original condition. the headboard itself does need regluing inone spot I found, BUT, when the bed is put together, it is very tight. I was amazed at that. EMPIRE MAHOGANY SLEIGH BED WITH ROPE FOUNDATION With our compliments we are pleased to offer this all original 19th Century Empire Sleigh Bed with original tapered pole rails to support the bed with a rope foundation. This full sized period bed comes to us out of an intact early 19th Century Rhode Island Estate. Coming by an original intact rope bed is a rarity in itself. When we got the bed it was being used with a plywood bunky board as a foundation instead of rope. These were designed to be used with a thick horse hair mattress that sat a top the ropes. If you are doing a true correct historical preservation of the period this is correct bed. We have recently seen custom bedding made from thick memory foam bedding. Where box spring foundations make the bed height too high& can not be employed. This is absolutely the way to go. The ... morecost is not that much more than a standard mattress. You will need to find a custom bedding company in your city. The ends of the side, head and foot board rails each have toothed wooden gears on them. The bed originally had small wooden locking arms that had matched teeth. These served as a tensioning device that secured the ropes at a desired tension. The outline of these arms are present& can be replicated if so desired. The bed is in absolutely fantastic condition but we would advise you to have some knowledge about antique beds before getting involved with this. Each of the rails secure to the head& footboard with standard bed bolts which come with this bed. The bed is 83" long and 58" wide. The inside dimensions are 51" x 77" The head& foot boards are each 42" tall. This bed was made by a Rhode Island furniture maker for an old New England family whose fortune was made in Clipper ship freighting. It remained in one home since the day it was made for it. The 3 1/2 inch diameter pegged rails screw& counter screw into the headboard and foot board. Overall dimensions are 75" long, 51" wide, and 6' tall. The posts are 3" by 3" which make the inside dimensions approximately 69" by 45" The headboard hangs in place by hooks and eye screws, and seats into notches on the headboard cross bar. The bed is very solid and stable when assembled, weighing about 127 pounds. Both rails have an age crack running part way along the rail as shown in the photos. One rail is missing three pegs. Bought many years ago in Pennsylvania Dutch countryside. A great condition rope bed. Very fancy turned railings on the head and foot boards. All of the rope pegs are intact. Appears to be hand carved. A pair of braces was added to the side rails to help hold it together. These can easily be removed. All wood- no nails used in construction, only pegs. Solid cherry- with some of the planking more than a foot wide. Very old- each corner has roman numerals scored in it to match the bed rails. A really great antique piece of history! Local pickup only

I got these beds from an old farm house in Ohio. I was told the first one was a rope style bed so that is what I am calling it. The bed has some scratches and wear because it is very old. It looks to be in original condition. I have added lots of pics so you can see the condition.Both are a bed and a half or 3/4 sized which ever you prefer to call them(about four inches smaller than a full sized bed) The second bed I have just added to the listing also came from the same house. It is very primitive but cool. It has a very tall head board and a rounded foot board. It has an ornate piece on the top but it is broken in a couple of places. It is missing a set of brackets on the rails but could just be bolted together. I was going to use it to make a cool bench but my wife says I have to many projects so this is basically a 2 for one deal. This is a beautiful bench that was made from an antique rope bed. Look up the history of the rope bed its interesting. The bench is 36" tall x 42" wide x 19 1/2" deep. It has a custom made cushion. It has some dings and scratches showing its age. It also has some other character details. see pic# 5. The back posts have matching wear on the top points almost like it was planned. The last pic shows the bench under the cushion. The cushion has a zipper on it. I have the zipper facing forward in the pics just to show that it is there. Shipping is available but there will have to be an extra charge to build a crate. If you want a shipping quote contact but be realistic about expected charges.

Details: An antique c.1840-1870 handmade solid walnut rope bed. The bed has been converted from being a rope bed. Holes plugged, and fitted with newer solid wood rails to accommodate a full-size mattress set. The headboard and footboard are identical in size and style. Each one is made using two walnut panels, topped by a rolling pin crest, flanked by low, solid posts that feature mushroom-cap finials. The finish is original. Showing age appropriate patina, more so to the footboard where the finish is lighter along the top due to blankets being hung over it for many years. The overall condition is very good, only issues to report are minor scuffs and an old split in one wood panel on the footboard, wood contracting? This 1700s hired man's bed was placed at the foot of the master's bed in New England. It is made of maple with mortise-and-tenon joints. Later owners added rectangular nails(and. Beautiful. Hand-built rope bed, circa mid 1800s, from my Great Grandmother in Yadkin County, NC. The bed sports four cannonball-shaped post ends with squared legs and fluted turnings with what looks to be the original wood finish. Bed is a three-quarter size, solid cherry and/or maple, and comes with a custom-made mattress. Rope beds were common in the 19th century and had a lattice of ropes originally with the holes like this bed and then I'm told that they transitioned to pegs. In fact, it's been said that the saying"sleep tight" referred to the ropes on the bed- if the ropes were tightened you were likely to have a better night's sleep! The bed maintains its original size, and my Granmother had a custom mattress made to fit the bed. The bed has hand-turned spindles on each post with a cut-out headboard, similar to ... morea Sheraton rope bed. This large ca. 1860's JENNY LIND CRADLE in walnut is stained dark. The head and foot and side spindle posts all are beautifully turned in the traditional Jenny Lind pattern. The slats and slat framework are newer. This is a large. Sturdy cradle measuring 40 inches long, 22.5 inches wide, and stands 37.5 inches high. This is a great decorative piece and could be used as the companion to a doll or bear collection. This item has some condition problems. Being presented for sale is this Splendid American early 19th Century Tester Rope Bed.from a Connecticut farm estate) I Believe the wood is maple but MAYBE cherry. This charming bed is crafted with four tall ring turned tapering posts. Straight, chunky side rails and raised up on tall baluster turned legs, with the original rope pegs still intact on all four sides,not twisted to their correct positions in my photos) This fine period bed measures a total height to the top posts is 48" Total length is 83" Each rail measures 76" in length. Height to side rails is 21" Width is 54" Rails measure 46" wide. Side rails and rails at each end have hand made threads.used to put bed together.
