European, Possibly Italian Item# 120008IRU26 This is a work of exquisite craftsmanship. Covered in a thick mahogany and rosewood veneer. The colors exemplified in this chest are simply remarkable. Inlaid with fine marquetry work, the musical instruments central to the commode are flanked on either side by books hanging from knotted ribbon. Two large drawers make up the case, each fully dovetailed front and back, exposed on the sides. Crisp gilt bronze mounts grace the corners and feet, allowing the cabriole legs to terminate in lion paw feet. The shaped marble top is heavy and in wonderful condition, restored at the back left corner. This beauty spent the last 90 or so years in the clean. Crisp Scandinavian air- and it shows. It is in excellent condition with great curves, brass mounts, and veneer of exotic woods in a stunning diamond shaped pattern. The joints of the drawers are hand-dovetailed. It is topped off with a nicely grained green and white marble, cut so that the grain runs on a diagonal. There is a tiny spot of veneer missing under the lip of one of the drawers and a small fracture of the veneer in the crook of the right front leg as shown in the photos. Beautiful and unique piece of furniture! Clean lines with a contemporary appeal. Well made with well chosen veneers. Two upper drawers and two larger bottom drawers with a central bell panel and incised decoration with short turned legs. This would serve well as a dresser.
