The chair measures approximately 12 3/4" wide, 12 3/4" deep. and 26 1/2" tall. The wood looks to be maple. The condition is awesome for used furniture over 80 year old. Some vintage wear, but nothing to diminish the antique beauty. The roll top rolls beautifully. The top cover appears to be restored. High quality. Hard to find swivel chair with very few flaws. It has a tiger sawn writing surface in the center, which had to be glued back down as most desks of this age. We also had to re-glue everything, reinforce the roll, sand, strip, stain, and apply multiple coats of sealer and satin sheen lacquer on this hard-to-find 66-inch-wide roll-top desk by the Derby Desk Company of Boston, Mass. This is such a rare& beautiful piece of furniture. I purchased it from an elderly lady in Edmonds WA that had had the desk most of her life. Her story was that the desk had served in the Washington state capitol building. she had a paper(see photo) with a few of the details typed up. I have kept that paper with the desk since I bought in in 1989. Crafted by S. Friedman Cabinet Company of Indianapolis The dimensions are 50.5 x 34 x 59. It is larger than normal. A beautiful antique roll top desk in great condition for the age. This desk measures 48.25" high at the back center. It has a width of 49.5" and a depth of 31.5" The kneehole height is 27.25" to the bottom of the cross board and the width is 29" The bottom section of the desk has four small drawers on the right side with a pullout writing surface above it. The right side has two small drawers above a larger file drawer. The divider board in this drawer is broken. There is also a pullout writing surface abov this bank of drawers. Only one of the other six drawers has a divider section in it. The remaining pieces are missing. There is a locking mechanism on the bottom section. It is a little sticky. All of the drawers have decorative fan style handles made from wood. The top section has various sized cubbies and only ... moreone drawer. There are two pencil trays that hang at the center and the section above these trays pulls out to reveal hidden trays as well. The roll top on this is in great condition and slides up and down smoothly. This section also locks with the original key. There is a vintage metal pencil sharpener attached to the top right side of this. There are age and use appropriate imperfections. Scratches, dings, and dents on this that enhance the character. There is what appears to be an inkk stain on the top and there is also some stains in the drawers. There is also age darkening to the wood. Behind the roll, dated April 29, 1909, addressed to Gus Lilquist, City from C. W. Davis, Lumber and Coal, Gladstone, Mich. postmarked Gladstone, Mich.1909. Research indicates that Gus operated a saloon in Gladstone up until 1918. The intrigue builds! There is a bullet hole through the front of one of the drawers, and a round ball impression on the inside of the drawer where the ball stopped, like from an old muzzle loader! The door on the side which had been locked was kicked in. ... moreWhat valuables did Gus keep behind that door! What sort of ruffians did Gus have to deal with in Gladstone in the early 1900s! Was there a shoot-out! Was there a murder! Was there a robbery! What happened! Who knows! My beautiful and mysterious desk has 4 drawers on one side. And a door on the other side with 3 square open cubbyholes, above 3 long open cubbyholes that are behind the door. Above each side, just under the writing surface, is a pull-out board. The cubbyhole section contains 18 open slots, 1 drawer, and 2 pencil slots. The tambour slides easily and has a key to lock it. Its dimensions are 48" wide, 30" deep, and 44" tall. It is in very good. Beautiful condition. I have included photos of the bullet hole. Antique Roll Top Quarter-sawn desk in oak--early 1900s and chair
This is a beautiful S-curve roll top desk in very good condition. We have owned this desk for 35 years. But the prior owner found an envelope inside the desk dated 1905. It is crafted all around so does not have to be placed against a wall. The drawers have dovetail joints-a few of the joints are loose, but drawers work fine. There are 3 locks-one on the roll-top, one on the side or end of the desk, and one on the right-hand door and we have all keys and the locks work perfectly. The top rolls up and down very smoothly. I do not know who made the desk. The oak chair did not come with it, but matches nicely. 2 of the back slats are broken but the swivel and wheels are very sturdy and work great. Chair is free. I do not know the exact age but believe it was around the late 1920's. I do know that the desk was stripped of its original stain and clear coated to bring back its original true oak color. And the drawer pulls were replaced, in the late 1980's. The desk show the normal wear for its age. A few of the wood slats appear to be loose but all are present and intact. One of the Front legs of the desk has a wood gouge. There is a small blue plastic pen holder that is glued down inside of desk(the pen is missing) There is NO chair with this desk. The overall dimensions is 15”deep by 20 1/2” wide and 33 1/2” tall. The interior of the desk is 12 1/2” deep and 17 1/2” ... morewide. There are 4 cubicles inside of the desk each measuring 3 1/2” deep by 3 1/2” wide. The drawer 11 1/2” deep and 15 1/4” wide and 1 1/2” high. Many use these as decorative displays for plants. Antiques, and crafts. But, if you want to play“school” you will need a chair. Take a look at my other listing. I have 2 other school desk one from ASCo and the other from Theodor Kundtz Co. listed. For as long as I could remember these desk were in my parents basement with the Roll Top first and the 2 other desk behind it. This allowed for 3 desk and 3 chairs. The previous owners tell me ... moreit came from the Proctorsville Vermont Post Office. I looked it all over and couldn't find a makers mark. The canvas backing for the roll top is marked as follows: PIEDMONT MANF. CO. DRILLS. Piedmont Manufacturing Company was a South Carolina textile manufacturer that was in operation from about 1873 to about 1977. Please see the pictures. The desk is predominantly made of oak. The drawer backs and other structural parts are made of softer wood. There is a column of 4 drawers on the right with a wooden locking mechanism in back. The desk top with lifting panel that exposes a spring-loaded swing-up typewriter platform. And pigeon holes with 5 drawers(one labeled Coal Orders) In one drawer is a fragment of paper with 1920s dates. I don't know if that is original to the desk or not. The slightly serpintine roll top has the original working lock and the original key(a cool one- see pictures) The lifting panel lock and the drawer lock is lacking the key. The sides and back are panelled and are quite decorative if you want to have the desk stand in the middle of a room. Early 1900's Antique Quarter Sawn Oak Wood Roll Top Desk
I have an early 1900's Roll Top Desk that has the type writers tray on the left(perfect for putting a modern printer) and a pull out tray on the right hand side. Center drawer closes and locks the right hand side drawers when pushed in further than completely closed(very nice feature) Roll top is in excellent shape and has a secretary's organizer with pull out trays and compartments.
