The drawer fronts have book-matched crotch mahogany veneers and cockbeading. The fitted interior(sorry for the dust) has burl walnut veneers, ebonized pulls and boxwood stringing. The interior cupboard door opens to reveal a drawer with a secret drawer behind. See photo) The desk measures 44" high by 39 1/2" wide by 20" deep. In overall very good condition. There is some minor loss to the veneer on the feet which we will restore for you. The desk lid is cupped which makes the desk impossible to lock properly though we do have a key. I don't think we want to try to address this particular issue but please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. There is also some cracking of the veneer on the lid but it is all stable, nothing loose. The desk has great color and patination and is guaranteed to be as described. Antique 1800's Desk Walnut Slant Front Top Section Only or Countertop Original
Antique 1800's desk slant front top or possibly a counter top desk for a country store. Etc. I believe that it's all original with the original outside finish and interior light green paint. The wood is walnut, popular back in the old days. The early desk hardware is pictured in photos# 3 and# 8. As you can see it possibly is a desk that just sat on a counter, etc. because of the way it's not finished on bottom and not much of evidence of any nails or screws holding it on to a base, so possibly a complete unit in itself and all complete. Photo#9 shows the pencil or pen holder that extents the whole inside front. In photo#4 the hole for an early ink well can be seen. It measures about 26 inches wide, about 20 1\4 inches deep and about 8 1\2 inches high in back and about 6 1\2 inches high in front. You can notice in photos#2,3,and#8 that the interior top looks lighter than the outside which is common with antiques where the outside is exposed to light, smoke, dust etc. thru the years darkening the color and I would say the exterior is close to a medium(Early American Minwax) color which is a desirable color for antiques.It's a fairly heavy piece about 26 lbs. and shipping will vary depending on where it's going just to let you know. All of the drawers are inlaid with satinwood stringing, each drawer is hand dovetailed, the brass hardware pulls and escutcheons are original, the hidden drawer is shaped and in the interior section behind small door, bracket feet are original, secondary wood is pine and the back boards of pine are hand planed. This desk was recently picked from an old home here in NH. It is made of solid black walnut. Two piece construction for easy moving and is 100% ORIGINAL It has a drop front writiing surface or lid in good condition, meaning not cracked at the hinges, it does however have a small crack in front corner of lid. see photo) This crack is easily glued back as it has no stress at this point so not a big deal The drawer is in good condition and has early dovetails, the legs are turned and reeded, the original gallery is present and so are the original keys. This fantastic Walnut Victorian Slant Front Secretary Desk Bookcase with Burl Accents and Large Fancy Crown breaks down into three pieces for transport(crown, bookcase top with desk, and bottom base) is full of character, has many lovely design details, original wavy glass, and a spectacular warm finish which appears to be original. The bookcase top is graced with a handsome. Large carved sunflower crown with beautiful burl panel accents. This fabulous removable ... morecrown sits on the gorgeous top crown moulding. The bookcase portion of the top is adorned with lovely fluting details along with petite square burl accents that surround the original glass doors. There is an intact lock on the glass doors and a decorative(non-working) key is included to assist in opening the doors. The left door has an older repair where the hinge was moved to a different position, none of which impacts the beauty or structural integrity of the door. Two adjustable shelves that measure 33 ¾” long by 8” deep provide display and storage opportunity. The elegance continues on the slant front door which is graced with a lovely large burl panel. This elegant slant front door opens to reveal a black felt writing surface along with six pigeon-hole cubbies. Two small front drawers, and three large file slots. A decorative(non-working) key is included to assist in opening the door. The burl panel detailing found on the elegant slant front door is repeated on the two side dovetailed drawers as well as on the bottom door. American Chippendale Walnut Slant Front Antique Desk, Chester County, PA c. 1807
AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT SLANT FRONT DESK. PENNSYLVANIA Probably Chester County. Signed illegibly four times and dated 1807 Item# 411IQL13P This fine example of Eastern Pennsylvania craftsmanship. Almost certainly originating in Chester County, has a distinct air of ingenuity about it. A departure from the typical corinthian fluted corner columns seen on these cases, the desk employs a quartered column with three graduated divisions of double-ringing in completion of the drawer blades they flank. This effective treatment softens the facade and introduces a certain magnetic rural character to the form. The interior is exceptional. The deep writing surface edged by a scalloped molding conforming with the serpentine of the ten blocked front drawers beneath ten pigeon holes. Instead of employing a prospect door, the center of the interior ... moreis a complicated little box that is easily drawn from the center- over the pigeon holes in this box, the valance actually is a tiny hidden drawer. By removing the entire dovetailed box from the interior, a previously hidden document drawer becomes visible. On the front it is signed illegibly"J. Sh.f.p Rat. 1807" the same signature seen also on the two hidden document drawers that flank this drawer and the two hidden document drawers that flank these as well- to bring out the deepest document drawers, a long string is attached and can be tugged to bring these unseen pieces forward. The front of the desk is composed of a pair of lopers. The fronts of which are set on tiny dovetails and sunk into the blades, and four graduated drawers retaining their original locks and untouched structure with replaced brasses. The top and bottom of the case are openly dovetailed, the back of the case with untouched half-lapped planks retaining their original rosehead and cut nails and a nearly black level of oxidization throughout.
