The lock is missing/removed, and there is a crack on the wood, and the corner has a piece of wood that is chipped off. Please look at pictures carefully as we have photographed it from every angle. You are bidding on a Wonderful walnut traveling writing desk. I believe this to be civil war era but there is a paper calendar applied on the one board from 1884. Not sure if that is orginal from when desk was made, Made of walnut with brass corner plates and orginal handles, have the key and the lock does work, the insert around the key hole is missing, this was probably made of bone, the inside is orginal, the covering is worn and stained, has small cubbys to hold things, measures 18 x 9 7/8 and 6 inches high. This is a Great Piece. Just look at the workmanship.

ANTIQUE WRITING LAP DESK This is a great antique writing lap desk. I think it dates back to the late 1800's. It was a family heirloom. From the lithograph and paper label on the inside. I believe this lap desk original came from SPAIN. This travel lap desk has been used through the years so there are expected signs of wear from normal use. The wood on the bottom has a split. I am sure not too difficult of a repair. The red cloth writing surface is worn and a bit soiled. The wood is overall nice but there are some minor scratches and scuffs from age and use. The paper labels on the inside have some additional writing not original to the labels. This desk measures 16" x 11 1/4" when opened and 8" x 11 1/4" when closed. Here pictured is an antique mahogany lap desk. Circa 1800. Probably English. Measures approx. 20" across x 10" wide x 6" high(closed) No key. Several compartments. Ink bottle intact but top of neck is jagged(see photo#6) Photo#4 shows a secret drawer on one side only accessed by removing the metal dowel pictured on the felt. If the desk were closed and locked the drawer would be inaccessible. The ledge on the far back of the top surface is removable as are the lids of the middle small compartment and the compartment to its far right. I believe the metal parts are brass and the knob on the middle compartment is bone of some sort. There are ink stains on one of the lower compartments(see photo#8) The wood bottom of the'secret' drawer is split. And the felt. Which seems original, is split(approx. one(1) inch) along the ... morecentral seam. An unusual find at an estate sale is this 1800s Victorian travel writing desk with inkwell. Stuffed full of copperplate handwritten letters. There are over 100 letters, some with envelopes, in the storage compartment under the blotter. The beautiful wood box needs restoration, however, as it is in damaged condition. The front lock is missing, there is a brass curved corner piece missing, and the lid does not sit square- looks like a problem with a hinge adjustment. The felt on the underside is missing, and the blue velvet blotter on the writing surface is stained. A cut glass inkwell is missing its lid. There is a crack in the veneer on the front, and a chip on the back. The inlaid brass straps are present with original patina. The brass oval disc on the lid is loose, and has not been monogrammed. Beautiful Antique Roll Top Lap Desk. Writing Slope Up for your consideration is this truly beautiful antique lap desk. Made of wood. I am uncertain of the actual type of wood but has nice graining. This is just great in every way, it is intact and very secure when completely shut and when you pull out the drawer at the front, it will open the roll top portion in the back to expose a three section area inside. Once the roll top is open, you can unfold the desk portion which flips open from back to front and leans securely on the open drawer for stability, the desk has a purple or a worn blue felt top with brass hinges. Again, the wood is very nice inside and out, the drawer opens nicely as does the roll top portion. There is a large transfer decoration on the wood desk top, there is also the very slight remains of one on the top of the roll ... moretop framed area. There are only two areas with minor problems, first is the lower right corner which is missing a small corner wood piece, and the upper left corner of the framing of the roll top where there is also a small piece of wood missing; otherwise, working very well and looking very good. There is a brass lock in place for the drawer but no key and the hinges are brass as well and seem to be original. It measures 12 1/8" wide, 9 1/4" deep, 5 1/2" tall. It is very clean, no major breaks, cracks, or discoloration. Nice patina, nice scroll design in wood at the top roll top framing, transfer decoration is wearing and almost gone on the top portion, and of course, the two missing pieces mentioned earlier. Antique Parquetry Travel Writing Desk poss. Japanese
Here is a stunning travel writing desk- of various woods formed into parquetry designs- the under and outer sides laquered with Oriental plants. Length is 12 5/16" Height is 3 1/4" There are condition issues- the lid has a chunk off lower. Left corner; a 1 12" crack lower, right; the front hinges have been replaced(compare photos 4 and 9) Inside, a circle of laquer is missing, with other smaller losses to outside; there is a space without wood to base(see photos 7 and 10) Charming old lock, but key is lost. Still wonderful as it is- with some work, it will be spectacular!

Antique Victorian 1852 Wood Travel Lap Desk, Brass Hardware, w/ Key
This is an antique Victorian 1800s solid wood sloped travel lap desk with working brass lock and key. Featuring. Brass hinges and lock, blue felt writing surface with two storage compartments underneath. It has two inkwell compartments and the center section for pens lifts out. Found inside the center compartment was six nice quill pen ends and what appears to be some sort of pencil. The lapdesk wood looks beautiful and is undamaged. There is an inscription inside the box it is pictured and says that" This box was presented on December 25th 1852" So obvioulsy a Christmas gift. The lock and key work properly and the hinges are undamaged. The box is in very nice condition. The quill ends and pencil are included in this sell. The box appears to be solid walnut. Fine Brass Bound Mahogany Travel Writing Desk Ship Capt Signed James London 1814
Antique Ship Captain's Writing Desk Estate find from the home of a collector with with a New England family provenance. This is a large heavy Ship Captain's Traveling Writing Desk. It has decorative brass bound corners and edges, side handles, lock front and inscribed monogrammed plaque on top with the initials"JL" Inside there is a top surface piece that fits into the top with a small latch(the second latch is missing) Both the top and bottom inside pieces have crisscrossed ribbons on one side to hold paperwork. In the front is a rows of compartments- two small ones have lids and the center longer section has a curved wood lid with a handle. On the reverse side of this longer lid there is writing that says"James London August 1814" There is another name in the middle but I can't make it out. There is a Brass ... morepiece on the side that lifts up to hold the top of the desk up. The one on the other side is missing. Under that piece is a small brass dowel that when lifted out allows for a bottom drawer to be opened and pulled out- the drawer runs the length of the inside of the desk. Beautiful Mahogany Wood finish on the outside. In very good condition for the age. There are some small missing parts inside, but the piece can still function as a travel desk. Makes a beautiful display piece and collectible. Inside the desk was an early newspaper article about a Captain John Julius Guthrie who was the executive officer of the sloop of war Saratoga who captured a slave ship at the mouth of the Congo River in 1861. It says this was the last slaver captured by an American warship and the captain then resigned and entered the confederate service. The article is a letter to the newspaper written by the son of the captain and he points out that the slave ship was owned, manned and equipped in the city of Boston, Mass. It is possible that the desk was later used by this man, but I am not sure- it was left in the desk, and I can include it if the buyer is interested. Desk measures 20" long. 11&

The writing surface lifts up to reveal more storage on both sides. If you know the secret of the box. You can make a panel pop out which reveals two small secret drawers. It is obvious that the upper compartment with the secret release has been reworked at some point in the past, and as a result there are some small pieces of wood and a metal band(spring? that go into that compartment to keep it functioning properly. The stand is an interesting addition to the lap desk. It is open when the desk is not present, and features a little pull out tray on two sides. Fine Burl Mahogany Small Travel Writing Desk Decorative Cut Out Work Inside
Antique Burl Mahogany Travel Writing Desk Estate find from the home of a antique collector. This is a lovely burl mahogany wood travel writing desk. It has a beautiful patina and wood grain pattern. There is a monogrammed brass plaque on the top. Inside there is a top is some very nice cut out wood that has compartments to hold paper, etc. Behind the wood cutouts there is a light blue fabric which is partially missing in the middle. One of the small pieces of wood that acts as a divider is also not in place but I do have the loose piece of wood and will include it. Once opened. The bottom piece has a curved removable pen holder and two small sections possibly to hold ink wells. The bottom piece flips forward to reveal two writing surfaces, both of which lift up to reveal storage underneath. There is a lock on the front but I do not have a ... morekey. There is a crack in the frame of the upper writing surface but it is not loose. There are age cracks in the top(which is tight) and a wider one across the bottom that you can see in the picture of the bottom. There is also two pieces of the very narrow edge molding on the outside top, and one on the corner front bottom that you can see in the pictures. In spite of these age and use issues, this is still a beautiful decorative piece in a small size that would look great in many settings. Desk measures 14" long. 9.75" wide and 6" tall. This is a diamond in the rough. Yes it needs loving care and restoration. We know it was a great. Great grandmothers desk, but not sure if she brought it from England or not. It has a secret drawer. Little compartments, and a little cover for small treasures. inkwell glass bottle(1) Some keys, some waxed string for whatever we don't know. It has brass corner plates, and a plate on the top which we believe are the initials. H A M. there is what appears to be one pen which you would put a tip in, and a pencil. THERE IS ALSO some original sealing wax. they kind you melt and stamp. The felt is in bad shape, and the felt that connected the little table hinge is worn off. It weighs 14.9 pounds. measures in the box form 10 X 17 3/4 X 7 1/4" tall. and opened up it is 21" long, and slants for easy writing. It needs someone who can appreciate ... morehow old it is. A treasure from long ago. I am not asking lots of money because it does need some redoing. I took pictures of all angles so you can see it is missing a bit of wood on one corner. The lock it gone. 19th C Wood Travel Desk, "John C. Gile, Philadelphia" - 3 Secret Drawer
This auction is for a wonderful old 19th century travel or lap desk. It measures 21" wide by 12 1/2" deep by 9 1/4" high and weighs 28 1/2 pounds. There is a crack in the top. But the hinges are good and it has all its brass fixtures, including a handle on each end that lies flat and pulls up for use. The name plate on the top has"John C. Gile, Philadelphia" in script. I don't know if this is the same man or not, but there is a John C Gile, age 23, on the 1860 Philadelphia Census. Also, during the Civil War, there was a John Gile who enlisted as a Private in Co. C, 68th Infantry Regiment, PA, on Aug. 4, 1862 and deserted from the same on Oct. 7, 1862, and I don't know if this is the same man or not as the owner of the desk, but it's fun to think they're the same person! Travel writing desk dating to the late 1800's. This wood desk measures approximately: 22" in length. 12" in width and 10" in height(measurements taken when desk is closed) This portable/ campaign desk folds open to 32" long. And has eight inside compartments, two outside drawers, and four additional secret drawers hidden behind a wall on the inside. The top has an un-monogrammed brass cartouche. There are brass accents and a lock mechanism. But no key. The sloped writing desk still contains the original wood pen ... moreholder(7 1/2" long, 2" wide and 3/4" tall) and the glass powder jar with cover(1" tall and 1 1/2" wide) There are bits of wood veneer missing on the top and corners. There is some staining. And a few minor rips to the black and blue velvet on the inside. There is scuffing and scratching on the bottom. An amazing. Substantial piece weighing twenty-eight pounds. Found in a home my family has occupied since 1921. This beautiful antique Victorian era wood desk secretary has a surprise inside.22 seperate lesson sheets of"International Bible Lessons" dated 1879, Our Children's Picture Lesson" published by the American Baptist Publication Society. The box opens up to reveal an original glass ink bottle with cap, a secret drawer, compartments for holding paper, pens, has original blue felt padding and brass hardware. The top has inlay in gold and black. Really nice condition!

For consideration is a rare. 18th century, travel/lap, desk, my guess a ladies. Is/was decorated with gold Japanning on all sides and ends as well as inside. This pieces is in much need of restoration and loving care. price reflects this) The fold down'table' portion is covered in a deep blue velvet that shows wear from the doors opening. The is a key hole on this but I do not have the key. Features compartments for ink bottles and writing implements. One end is rounded like a book. This was a heavily used item and thus shows it's wear and age. One hinge is missing it's brass screws. I have tried to show as many photos as possible to give you a feel for this piece. 1800's Antique Wood Wooden Portable Folding Travel Lap Writing Desk Box w/ Key
ANTIQUE WRITING DESK– NO RESERVE Acquired at an estate sale in Virginia is this antique wood folding lap writing desk. Unknown type of wood- does have a cedar smell on the inside. Inside in many areas written in pencil is dated information from the 1800’s. Some of the writing with signatures is faded and difficult to read. Some the years can be read are“June 1894” 465 letters” March 15& 16 1895” March( 17, 1877” and“July( 18, 1875” There is no structural damage to the box. There are no apparent breaks or repairs. Hinges are securely in place. Closed the desk measures 3 ¾ inches tall. 11 ¼ inches long and 7 ¾ inches wide. Open the desk measures 15-3/4 inches long. 11-1/4 inches wide and 1-1/4 inches to 2-1/2 inches tall(slopes up) Writing area has ink stains and is loose in one area– see photos. Glass inkwell without cap ... moreis included. Two pencils are also included. When the desk is closed the top has some marks/stains– I have not tried to clean these marks/stains. Key is included; unknown if this is the actual or original key. The key does work but at times it is difficult to unlock– I would not recommend locking the desk. Civil War Era officers travel writing desk English Style with Secret Drawers
Antique traveling writing desk. Believed to be civil war era. Officers desk. Beautiful wood and lovely to just look at with the brass corners. Writing desk closed is 19.25 x 10 x 6.5" Comes with one antique glass ink bottle, without the cap. There are carry handles made of brass that fold flush against the desk when not in use. There are two special features, TWO secret compartments. Open the writing area. Remove a corner peg and out pops the specret compartment with two drawers. I was told the three knobs are ivory and appear to be original. Remove the large brass pin inside. And open the brass handle on the outside and another secret comparment. A drawer that is the full length of the desk. The writing board will need to be reattached in the center where the fold is, but the piece of ribbon to lift the writing board is still intact. ... moreThe hinge needs attention. and the other hinge is missing. The brass plate for the key on the front of the desk is not there. There is no key. The fabric on the writing surface appears to be original. The brass corners and the brass handles also appear to be original. There is a brass plate inlaid on the top, no inscription, and this is orignial I am sure. The wood has some cracks, but I really think this adds to the character and given the age, not a detraction. This would make a wonderful gift for that special writer or poet in your life. There is something about using a piece of history that gives you a special approach to writing. Now I am not a writer, but love antiques and was graced with two beautiuful writing desks, and only have room for one. This graceful desk will be packed and shipped with great care. Antique Travel Walnut ? Wooden Writing Lap Field Stationary Portable Desk Box
Antique Portable Travel Writing Lap Desk with bun feet. This piece was purchased at an estate sale in the Washington DC area. Desk measures approx. 17" long x 9 deep x 14" tall. There are several compartments and drawers. The drawers are all hand dovetailed. Front and back sides. There are the 2 hidden compartments that come out, but look as though they are stationery columns. My guess is that the brass hardware is original. The finish may not be original. The wood may be walnut, not sure though. There are some nicks, surface scratches and signs of aging, all of which I consider age appropriate wear. A little bit of veneer damage, some stress cracks(some are natural in the wood) and inside has some slight warping. There is no key. I love this piece but have nowhere to display it in my home.
