The desk comes with four raised panel dove tail drawers that retain all the original hardware. The center where the legs go have a reverse cove carving, which I have never seen in oak. It has a scallop bottom trim base, raised panels all the way around and a wide bevel edge on the solid tiger sawn oak top. The only negatives I see on the desk is that there is a little wear on the edge of the top from rubbing against something and there is a split going down the center of the top. We most likely could pull the top off and repair the top, which wouldn’t make a huge difference, but it is an expensive repair. The desk itself is high end quality.

The drawers are all dove tail with brass ribbed knobs. The doors have locks, but there is no key. We take a lot of pride in doing up our antiques nicely, and we certainly went all out here, with our head refinisher Norm doing a job of unbelievable quality on this desk. It has a tiger sawn writing surface in the center, which had to be glued back down as most desks of this age. We also had to re-glue everything, reinforce the roll, sand, strip, stain, and apply multiple coats of sealer and satin sheen lacquer on this hard-to-find 66-inch-wide roll-top desk by the Derby Desk Company of Boston, Mass. The top of this gorgeous Side-by Side Secretary is graced with lovely crown moulding with elegant applied ribbon moulding. Elegant ribbon moulding is also found around the bow front glass door as well as around the beveled glass ... moremirror that adorns the back of the fancy top display shelf. Quarter Sawn Tiger Oak Desk - Circa 1890's - Prime Quality - Many Compartments
The following is a modified version of the appraisal. Modified only to read clearly to an audience: American golden oak cylinder front desk. Circa 1890. Also, it appears to be quarter sawn oak, also referred to as tiger oak. Those are the lines in the wood that run across the grain. This is usually an indicator of a quality piece and is a desirable feature. It is unusual that it has the tilt writing surface which is adjustable for drawing. Drafting, or perhaps other purposes. Also very unusual to have the hidden compartments on each side of it. There is another hidden compartment in this desk) The condition is as good as it appears in the photos, with no significant damage or repairs, and it has an old or original finish, this desk is valuable. It is important to note that oak is currently out of favor. Due to the Economy and the uniqueness of San Diego's economy. While this is true, I want to emphasize, records do not indicate one with the added features of this desk. This appears to be better than most roll top desks out there. Again, due to the additional unusual features, and original finish, the value is higher than other desks from the auction site I gave in the 3rd paragraph for reference. Virtually the only place you can see this desk is in the old Globe Wernicke product catalogs. This is a very pretty ladies desk owned by the seller’s family for over 40 years. It has a low applied scroll-carved crest rail over the wide hinged curved slant front and cabriole legs. A fitted interior. Long curved front drawer and two smaller curved front drawers complement the design. Height at center back 42 5/8" Width of cabinet 27 1/2" Depth of cabinet 14 1/4" Width of legs 29 1/2" Depth of legs 16 3/8" The desk has some wear from years of use. Please review photos. This desk is very well built and sturdy. There is no key and a small block is missing underneath on the right side of the cabinet(under the desk) that could easily be replaced. The right rear leg(viewed from the desk front) has a repair. This postmaster's desk was created by Standard Furniture Co. of Herkimer, NY. The chair was made by W.H. Gunlocke Chair Co. of Wayland, NY. Both are tiger oak, I believe. The desk is comprised of 4 sections: base. Top, cubbies and rolltop. There are some stains and scratches, but the desk is in incredible shape for its age. There are some pieces of veneer missing, but we have some of them. Two brass foot casings are missing in back, but we do have one of those, also. The desk has pullout panels left and right. The gorgeous cubby section has 6 drawers that are finished on top, also(see photo) It has a small door for which we do not have the key. All ... moreof the pulls, and the foot casings, are brass. ROLL TOP DESK - Derby Desk Boston USA - Tiger Oak W/ Key 1890's - S Roll
Derby Desk Company: George H. Derby opened a small furniture company in Boston in 1872. By 1879 he was producing roll-top desks. A partner joined him the following year and his business became Derby and Kilmer Desk Co. Then Derby, Kilmer and Pond Desk Co. In the mid 1890s, the firm was incorporated as the Derby Desk Co. Its headquarters were in Boston, but it had a large factory in Somerville, Mass. just outside of Boston. The company expanded across the country until it was bought by another firm in 1931. Derby roll-top desks sell for a few hundred dollars into the low thousands, depending on style and condition. This desk was inherited by us from my brother-in-law who was an avid antique collector. It was in his home for many. Many years. It was probably purchased on the Northern East Coast. I do not know what profession may have used this ... moredesk as it has many, many drawers and pigeon holes. It is in really nice. Original shape. It is a locking desk. We have the key! It also has what they call a"secret lock" which locks all the desk drawers below. Beautiful Tiger Oak S-Roll desk- has 31 drawers including two pencil drawers. Drawers are tilt-out type and regular drawers. Also has many pigeon holes. And a doored storage compartment in top section. Also has places for paper, etc. Bottom drawers with file drawer- also has two slide out writing areas. Roll top rolls fine. Desk surface is in nice condition. A little cleaning and it will be a gem. We are moving and cannot take it with us. There are a couple wood splits on a couple panels. And there is a small area about 1.5" on the top of the desk that the oak veneer is missing. Overall- the desk is in beautiful. Original condition. Nothing has been done to it that we know of- or since we've had it. It has been stored. Drop Front Northwind Tiger Oak Secretary Desk Side by Side Bookcase
Crafted of solid quarter sawn oak about 1900. A side by side secretary desk and bookcase with a Northwind design. I think at one time someone messed with the bookcase section and changed it from a curved front to a straight front. Also the veneer on the drop front was replaced, and is coming loose, and then the original Northwind carving was put back on. The Northwind carvings seem to be intact without any damage, and the other parts of elsewhere are in good condition. I have the key that will work for the drawers and the drop front, but not for the bookcase door. It still is a rare Northwind piece. Stands about 6 feet. And is about 40" wide, and 13" deep. This is a late 19th century Tiger Oak Side-by-Side Secretary Desk/ Book Case. It is in excellent antique condition overall and loaded with details. The tiger striping feature in the oak is amazing throughout. There is an open upper shelf backed by a shaped beveled mirror. Below the open shelf. On the left, is a four shelf book case with three adjustable shelves and a curved glass door. On the right is a smaller storage compartment with a leaded beveled glass door. Below that is a drop down door that becomes the desk top when opened and reveals five cubbies and a central drawer. Below that are three larger drawers. The drop down and the three large drawers all have locks. All of the locks work and the key is present. Flanking all of this is a pair of Roman columns topped by Ionic capitals that hold up a canopy with an ogee shaped facing edge. ... moreThe two front feet are Empire style scrolls. There are some old cigarette burns on the top shelf and three of the leaded glass panels have hairline cracks in them, but taken as a whole the piece is utterly fantastic. Antique Oak Library Table or Writing Desk Golden Oak Quarter Sawn Tiger Oak
LOCAL PICK-UP ONLY* Up for sale is this beautiful old library table or writing desk made out of quarter-sawn. Or quarter-cut white oak. The wood is cut in such a way to reveal the large flaking pattern found in white oak(Quercus alba) that has been quarter sawn. Once stained, the wood has a rich golden color as seen in the photos. The table measures about 26 inches wide, 42 inches long, and stands about 30 inches tall. There is a drawer on one side and a shelf across the bottom. There is a burn mark along the edge as shown in the 5th photo, but otherwise the table is in good condition for its age. The inside of the drawer seems to have been replaced at some point in time. English Antique Walnut hand crafted secretary with 3 graduated size custom dovetailed drawers. Fabulously carved lions. All original. Middle desk section with compartments and two interior drawers! This beautiful piece of furniture is in its original finish and hardware has been in my collection for many years. It measures approx. 39" wide x 41" high x 22" deep. On the inside where the desk section is located you will find a small corner chip off the wood to the left. This charming raised panel tiger oak desk dates from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. It is a large desk. And it is perfectly suited for a professional. Such as a lawyer, a banker, or a doctor. The desk has a removable top. Two pedestal bases, eight drawers, and two writing pull-outs. Please note the Eastlake design on the face of the drawers. This is a rare and unusual feature for raised panel oak desks similar to the one I am selling. The desk was refinished about 30 years ago by newlyweds who had received it as a gift from the bride's parents. The couple spent an entire summer stripping and refinishing the desk.
