Most unusual antique solid walnut center table hand carved winged creatures
It's not very often a piece like this comes along. The four supports for the table top are carved mythical winged female creatures. We have always referred to it as"the bird lady table" I was fortunate to find it more than 40 years ago in an estate sale and it has been a focal point in our home. Ever since. Hand carved from walnut, with a gold-veined black marble top-the marble has a crack, When the marble is mounted inside the frame of the table, the crack is not noticeable. I believe this piece is from the 1870's. But it could be earlier. It has hints of several periods. It is also unusual in that, it has four supports, evenly spaced, but the table top is a hex a gon-six sided. The table measures 32 inches across and 31.5 inches high. Conforming table apron, substantial tapered fluted blocked legs with a fine carved curved stretcher on both ends, fluted tapered blocked center legs with the original casters intact on all the legs. This dining table extends to 10 ft inch 1 long and would accommodate many more leaves but only 3 original leaves come with the table. This dining table opens and closes with ease and is solid and tight. The table measures 29 3/4 inches in height. With a skirt height to the floor of 26 inches, and measures 46 inches wide by 51 3/4 inches long without any leaves in place. This table weighs approximately 110 ... morelbs alone and the additional 3 leaves weigh approximately 15 lbs total. Additional measurements: table with 1 leaf in place 46" X 63 with 2 leaves in place 46" X 74 1/2" with 3 leaves in place 46" X 85" But the table will extend out to 10 ft 1 inch(121 inches) allowing it to accommodate several more leaves if one desires to have additional leaves made for the table. This table was purchased outside of Knoxville. TN around 1982. It is all original as pictured, came unpainted and has always been treated with teak oil, Murphy's Soap or Danish oil. The top is naturally distressed and was heavily weathered when purchased. The 11th picture is without a flash is most representative of the natural color without added treatment. It's been a month or so since the top has been oiled so this picture shows the top at it's worse. From the construction should be circa 1790- 1820 or so. Post primitive. Pre Victorian and other than that your guess is as good as ours. The nails are all original square head, wooden pegs in the legs. The drawer may have been tacked back together at some point although it's hard to tell. The one damaged area is to the left top front corner of the drawer as pictured. This is a pre mid 19th century American made piece crafted by a German immigrant furniture maker in Pennsylvania. We have been researching this piece for the last two months and all we know is that it is the completely unique absolutely one of a kind creation. The woodworker somehow found a massive solid figured black walnut plank to craft this piece from. The tables top starts with a deeply carved wreath incised in its edge and than a canted complete border of Egyptian Sun Disks. The table's apron is completely bordered by the Eye of Ra motif. It has drop leafs. A front drawer and a faux rear drawer facing. each have over 100 carved embellishments on them. The table's box is further defined with over 100 hand carved raised panels, with pinwheels& numerous other styles of carving on its leaf support ears. It stands on big robust spool caved and turned legs with a spool carved and turned matching stretcher. All around its base its embellished by cute little turned walnut buttons.
