EXCEPTIONAL antique c1870 GILT MARBLE top TABLE GOLD WOOD GESSO AMERICAN ?
Exceptional c1870s wood. Gesso and gilt table with marble top. Table measures 26 7/8" by 22 5/8" by 32 1/4" high. The original marble top measures 19" by 15" and sits loose but very firmly. The marble has a soft cloudy appearance, sort of like cream in coffee before it is stirred. The table is constructed of wood, pine I believe. The ornate, mostly stylized flowers and leaves decoration covering the entire table are molded white gesso. The entire table is then painted bright gold in areas and gold leafed in the remaining areas. This construction is typical of fine American picture frames from the period. I am not experienced enough to say for certain but I believe this table is American in origin. Nicely enough this table is all original and has not been messed with. Condition is very good and original with no structural ... moreweakness. There are a few small areas of missing gesso. The last photo shows a leg with three of the worst, though small areas of this missing gesso. There are several small gesso chips to the top area and other small chips can be found on close examination. There is also a rather consistent light wear to the gold leafed area around the marble top. This wear is also typical of gold leaf of this age. There is one small shallow chip to edge of the marble top(see second to last photo) Overall, this extraordinary table is in very fine original condition. The table is fairly heavy and sits firmly. This is the sort of art piece that would only add to the finest of interiors or galleries. Extraordinarily gorgeous and certainly rare.
