Antique Primitive Pine Sugar Chest with Bracket Feet Lock Americana Trunk Brown
This lovely primitive sugar chest came out of an old house here in Savannah. Georgia. It was found lined with a layer of newspaper dating from 1839-1840, so we are guessing this piece dates to the early part of the 1800s. The actual chest appears to be made from pine, which as far as we can tell is a bit unusual for a sugar chest. The box sides/top are all made from one slab of wood, so it is made from old large timber. The chest has one large deep compartment and then a small drawer in the bottom, each with a lock. We do not have the keys to the locks. It has low, simple bracket feet. The hardware is old, but most likely not the original, as the chest came with one of the original knobs loose inside. The knobs that are on there now are similar to the original. It was also painted with a brown wash at some point. The edges are all dovetailed, ... moreand there are old square nails used in the construction. This is a beautiful piece of primitive americana that most likely originates from the southern region, somewhere between North Carolina and Georgia. It's has one single dove tailed drawer and it also has hand dove tailing on the back of it. It has the biscuit board top with a center divider Inside. This sale is for an awesome Tiger Maple Sugar Chest. It has some killer figured Tiger maple all around. The chest is a two piece construction just like a large original. The base of the chest is all mortis and tenon construction with square wooden walnut pegs holding it together. It has Sheraton style hand turned legs. The divider inside the chest is mortised in. The chest has an inlaid brass escutcheon but no actual lock it is for decorative purposes only. The hinges on the lid are antique and inlaid in with flathead screws. It has an all hand dovetailed drawer with a chamfered bottom. The drawer has two hand turned tiger maple knobs(wooden knobs are much more authentic. As very few people could afford metal hardware back then) The knobs are attached with antique flathead screws and are hand chiseled in. The chest is all properly aged inside ... moreand out. It has an antique smooth finish. This chest would easily pass as an antique as I pay special attention to every detail. 2 pc antique cherry Jackson press cupboard Hepplewhite 1820's not sugar chest
This beautiful and unusual cupboard or press is probably from Kentucky or southern Ohio. The top and bottom have always been together. It is not a married piece. The base has exposed dovetails on the sides. It never took a molding to hide the dovetailing. The bottom of the top is also dovetailed as a picture will indicate. The brass hinges on the top and bottom are the same. The dovetailed drawer has a divider in it. The drawer took oval period brasses originally, but have now been replaced with wooden knobs, and the holes have been professionally plugged when it was refinished. The 4 doors all took locks originally one is original one is replaced and 2 are missing. The cornice is all original. the secondary wood is all tulip poplar. The cherry wood is very beautiful having both flame and fiddle grain. The cupboard measures 86 1/2' tall ... morebase 42' wide the depth of base 17 3/4' and the top counting the cornice is 44' wide. Wow what a rare find. This is an incredible primitive Virginia Sugar Chest from The late 1800s. It has a legible date of either 1874 or 1894 on board on inside with maybe initials of HE. It has solid 1 piece boards on top and sides and Rose Bud Nails( blacksmith hand made nails) along with Blacksmith Square head nails. North Georgia Solid Walnut Corner Sugar Chest / Moonshine Cabinet
You are bidding on a walnut corner sugar chest/ moonshine cabinet that came from an estate in Chickamauga. GA. This chest/ cabinet has been examined by a number of antique dealers and has been described as a corner sugar chest, moonshine cabinet and also as" I haven't ever seen anything like it, hmm! The front and top of the cabinet are walnut with the secondary cabinet framing appearing to be pine and looking at the grain in the two chamfered panels in the back they appear to be cherry. It appears to be original finish and hardware and has square nails in the back. We would welcome any ideas or suggestions as to what you think this chest might be! The chest is 39" high x 21 1/4" down one wall from the corner and 20 3/4" down the other wall, it is 7 3/8" out from the wall on one end and 7 3/4" out on the ... moreother end, the flat front is 19" wide and is 20" deep from the back corner, inside the locking section in the top of the chest is 18 1/4" deep and the door on the bottom cabinet is 18 1/4" wide x 17 3/4" high. It also has an approx. 12" high notch in the short sides to allow it to fit over the large baseboard of the old house, so the top fits flush against the walls and into the corner. There are no holes or marks on the back or the bottom to give the appearance that this cabinet hung or was attached to anything, so I do believe it was built to sit on the floor in the corner originally. The chest is in great shape with no repairs and almost no problems with the finish other than a few stains on the top. Whatever the original intended use for this cabinet was, it is definitely a rare and unusual southern antique that would make a great addition to any house or collection. Wooden worm gear, attached to a steel blade in a nickle plated metal housing with a spring tension crank. One small oak ball foot on the right side is missing. There is a split on the top as shown, and we have no lid for the opening. Otherwise. In original working condition. My research turned up absolutely nothing on this piece so I don't even know i f the lid was tin. Wood, ceramic, etc? Original Circa 1830's Southern Sugar Chest
For sale is this wonderful original southern sugar chest. Great original worn green paint with all hardware. Dovetailed corners and sliding drawer. The hand forged sugar cutter is inside and works well. Found in central Georgia at an estate sale about 10 years ago and has been in a collection since then. All square head nails except for a couple of no harm round heads used to reinforce a few corners. Well made piece and very attractive size-perfect for table top and a great conversation piece from the period when sugar was actually locked up. Victorian Sugar Or Chocolate Chest
This is a most eclectic piece. Victorian era sugar and chocolate chest for sale. The lid lifts up where chocolate was chopped; sugar was kept in the bottom drawer. The two were combined to make a rich chocolate beverage. Measures 15" x 9.75" x 13.5" Can be seen in Danville at the estate.
