There is a name and year written on the bottom of the desk, but it is very faint and can only be seen while hold the desk at a certain angle to the light. I tried to capture the writing in a picture, but could only get the first part of the name. The name stands out the most. The rest of the writing, I believe would be where the owner lived and the year is much fainter. It looks like Maggie C Farr(something) something) 1876 or 1896. The box measures about 11 ¼” x 7 3/4” x 3 ½” closed) Opened and lying flat the desk measures about 16” long. The inside bottom felt writing surface that lifts up is tight and strong while the top felt writing surface that lifts up is wiggly, but still very much intact. Very nice old lap desk. It has panel sides, rope twisted molding, detail cast brass hardware, escutcheons are intact. There are no keys or locks. The desk is 48 inches wide, 27 inches deep and 30 inches tall. Antique Davenport style desk purchased at an auction in New Jersey many years ago. It has original finish with green material(like oilcloth) writing area on top. It has beautiful graining on the inside with shelves and a small drawer. There are three pull out drawers on the right side as seen in the picture. They all have working locks as does the slanted top and the key is necessary to open the drawers as there is no knob on any of them. Fine Brass Bound Mahogany Travel Writing Desk Ship Capt Signed James London 1814
Antique Ship Captain's Writing Desk Estate find from the home of a collector with with a New England family provenance. This is a large heavy Ship Captain's Traveling Writing Desk. It has decorative brass bound corners and edges, side handles, lock front and inscribed monogrammed plaque on top with the initials"JL" Inside there is a top surface piece that fits into the top with a small latch(the second latch is missing) Both the top and bottom inside pieces have crisscrossed ribbons on one side to hold paperwork. In the front is a rows of compartments- two small ones have lids and the center longer section has a curved wood lid with a handle. On the reverse side of this longer lid there is writing that says"James London August 1814" There is another name in the middle but I can't make it out. There is a Brass ... morepiece on the side that lifts up to hold the top of the desk up. The one on the other side is missing. Under that piece is a small brass dowel that when lifted out allows for a bottom drawer to be opened and pulled out- the drawer runs the length of the inside of the desk. Beautiful Mahogany Wood finish on the outside. In very good condition for the age. There are some small missing parts inside, but the piece can still function as a travel desk. Makes a beautiful display piece and collectible. Inside the desk was an early newspaper article about a Captain John Julius Guthrie who was the executive officer of the sloop of war Saratoga who captured a slave ship at the mouth of the Congo River in 1861. It says this was the last slaver captured by an American warship and the captain then resigned and entered the confederate service. The article is a letter to the newspaper written by the son of the captain and he points out that the slave ship was owned, manned and equipped in the city of Boston, Mass. It is possible that the desk was later used by this man, but I am not sure- it was left in the desk, and I can include it if the buyer is interested. Desk measures 20" long. 11&

Rare Ship's Captain ENGLISH DAVENPORT DESK- c.1870 Search The Davenport Desk is English. C. 1870 This is a cherry desk with an ebonized finish. Typical of the Victorian era. Davenport desks were commonly thought of as"Ship's Captain's" desks. Very efficient and organized in a compact design that took up little space. Reputed to have gotten their name from the inventor. Captain John Davenport, back in the days of Clipper Ships plying their trade to the Far East. DESCRIPTION: The desk has four(4) drawers that run along both sides of the desk. On the left side the four(4) drawers have knobs but are designed not to open. On the right side of the desk. The four(4) drawers have knobs and do open and close. They have a key hole to lock them that was used during rough seas to keep them from opening but I do not have the key. ... moreThe desk is mounted on four(4) rollers and moves about with ease. When used at sea on a Clipper Ship the desk was securely bolted down to prevent movement. The hinged desk top is 21" X 15" and 3/4" thick. It opens up to reveal two interior drawers with knobs. The drawers are each 9"X 5"X 2" The open area inside of the desk when the hinged top is open is 18 5/8" X 13" and the depth of the opening at the front of the opening is 2 1/2" Gradually increasing in depth to 4 3/4" at the back. There is an open lid hinge on the left side of the desk that holds the top of the desk in an open position. The two(2) hinges that connect the desk top to the base both work smoothly and easily. 1800's Primitive Wood Ship Captains WRITING LAP DESK for restoration or parts
Offered for sale is this early to mid 1800's wood lap writing desk for restoration in poor overall condition. It has a real primitive look to it and would be a great piece if restored. I purchased it at a Maritime Nautical auction in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. The desk does have much wear and tear. And is missing some of its hardware. The lock and handles are missing and there is a loose board that needs to be re-glued under the small compartments. There is wear on the felt surface and the edges of the wood. It is a little unusual in the sense that it has a"lift top" panel that comes off as the pictures show. The box measures about 17" long by 10 1/2" deep by 7" tall. The desk has a great old antique look to it and could be a really fine looking desk with a little work.
