Included in this collection: The heavily carved chest with original hardware. An original typed manuscript of Captain Jonathan Dow: The Seafaring Days of Our New England Family. Framed photograph of the Brig Clytie taken from a glass painting done in the 19th century. Framed photograph of the Ship Clarissa B Carver taken in harbor in 1879. You are bidding on an early Funa Dansu, ship's chest of the Edo period(1688-1704) The chest is highly attractive with it's wonderful hand-wrought iron decorations and the deep patina that it has gained in the last 200+ years. Chest measures: 14" inches tall, 11 7/8" inches wide and 16 3/8" inches deep. I believe this chest to be constructed out of Japanese Cedar(Sugi) and the drawers out of Kiri wood. This chest would have held the important belongings of a merchant ship's captain such as: seals, money, charts and other documents. The chest is in overall good condition for age. Rare Antique Maritime Nautical Ship Captains Condiment British HMS Clarkia WW2
This is a rare find A condiment from the captain's table. Of the HMS Clarkia, K88, of the Royal Navy, British Corvette of the Flower, She saw service in World War 2, and was put into service in 1940. On the top of the piece, it says H.M.S. CLARKIA. Inside the lid it says S.W.A.N. Brand in a circle and inside that it says Bulpitt, Birmingham. it has a Cobalt Blue glass liner, that is in good condition, the metal is aluminum I think. Side have a decorative cutout. Measures 3 1/2 inches across including the handle, and slightlly over 3 inches high including the lid lifter. Please ask questions, I am not an authority on this type of piece. 1875 John Barker Ship Captains Barometer
This antique ca 1875 marine barometer was manufactured by John Barker& Co. Ltd. Kensington, England. I am no expert on these things but an expert at an antique show looked it over and said this is a well known manufacturer and marine barometers do not come much better than this one. These baromoters are commonly refered to as"Captains' Barometers" Unfortunately. It does not work and therefor is priced at about half what a working one of similar quality would cost. Found with a packet of 1945 Separation papers from a sailor who had served in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Tripoli, is an 8" by 10" black and white glossy photograph picturing CAPTAIN W. G. SWITZER. U.S.N. and CAPT. T.T. TUCKER. U.S.N. The USS Tripoli was a Casablanca class escort carrier of the United States Navy. Laid down February 1. 1943 as Didreckson Bay, she was renamed the Tripoli on April 3, 1943 and launched on July 13, 1943 with Captain Wendell G. Switzer in command. Internet research also shows Captain Tucker as having served on the Tripoli. This vintage WWII photo, showing some surface wear and staining from age and storage, will make an interesting addition to any collection.

Antique Primitive Ship Captains Desk
Up for auction is a Primitive Ship Captains Desk. Now I am not 100% sure but when I purchased it at house clean out I was told by the family that it was a Captains Desk and it had originated out of New England. I am not sure of it's age but i would say possibly late 1800's It is constructed all of wood and held together by what looks to be hand made dove tailing. It stands 41 3/4" H x 31 1/4" W x 26" D. It is a very heavy piece and actually it was photographed on a dolly because that is the only way one person can move it around. There are double doors with a metal lock hinge. Looking at the back of the cabinet it appears that a piece of wood was replaced. The top has a great patina and in photo#10 you can see a crack that runs partially across the top. Vintage Original Ship Wreck Salvage Captains Wheel Homer Alaska Find 20+yrs Ago
About twenty four years ago on a family vacation to Alaska we salvaged this wheel from a ship wreck near Homer. Boat fishing with the tides and they can be extreme in Alaska we came upon a vintage boat. It had beached itself in a cove of rocks last high tide. So we decided to investigate to make sure no one needed help. Once on board. Well what was left of it, we could tell it had been abandoned a good long time ago. The tide was coming back in fast and we had to get back on our boat. Someone grabbed the ships wheel somehow and as we left the cove the ship was under water again. Next day it was gone. The wheel is 20.5" tip to tip. Some of the finish is cracking or missing. Not sure what wood, but it is a solid hard wood, heavy.

There is some minor wear. Which is to be expected of a box from this period. It retains its three removable pewter tea containers, one with a slide, and two with covers and inserts. The top has the initials of the owner along with an anchor, which means the owner was a ship captain. Measures 9.5 inches wide, 5.5 inches deep and 5.25 inches high. I don't know alot about this piece. I was told it was an early piece prior to 1950's. But I have not authenticated that. I don't believe the leather writing surface is original but it matches nicely. Either way, it is a nice piece. It has 4 drawers on each side, dove tail construction, 8 drawers on the inside and a pen compartment on the top. Nice carving on legs and a solid piece. Hinge on both sides, if two screws are removed from one hinge lid should flip open, never tried but appears too open. Few light nicks, scuffs, and scratches. Good condition and well constructed.
