There are brass accents and a lock mechanism. But no key. The sloped writing desk still contains the original wood pen holder(7 1/2" long, 2" wide and 3/4" tall) and the glass powder jar with cover(1" tall and 1 1/2" wide) There are bits of wood veneer missing on the top and corners. The interior cupboard door opens to reveal a drawer with a secret drawer behind. See photo) The desk measures 44" high by 39 1/2" wide by 20" deep. In overall very good condition. There is some minor loss to the veneer on the feet which we will restore for you. The desk lid is cupped which makes the desk impossible to lock properly though we do have a key. There is also some cracking of the veneer on the lid but it is all stable, nothing loose. The desk has great color and patination and is guaranteed to be as described. It is golden/white painted lacquer with natural carved wood design. There is a key that can be hidden as part of the puzzle. Georgian Triple Fold Writing Box. Secret Drawers + MORE. C1820.(Ref' 2678)
Large solid mahogany Georgian triple fold writing box in fine condition. Measures approximately 16” x 10” x 6” Unspoilt patina with even colour and grain to all aspects. The box has been spared the all too common shrinkage splits that often mar the appearance of many boxes of the period. Inlaid brass corners. Cartouche, side handles and escutcheon…all original and complete and with the exception of the escutcheon, all with the original screw fixings. Please note the style of the side handles that represent the transition from the earlier‘drop’ handles to the later inset brass handles with the brass backing plate. The three sections of the box all close square. All hinges are in excellent condition as is the lock that comes complete with a working key. The lid opens to provide a small wooden writing surface with access to the‘office’ section ... morethat comprises of the usual twin inkwell sections, wafer slope and dished pen tray with storage space beneath. All components are original, the black finish to the pen tray being typical of writing boxes of the period. The matching pair of inkwells are replacements, are in A1 condition and fit the sections perfectly. The panel to the lid interior is original and has been treated to a replacement leather to the front to complement the leather on the sloping writing surface. The restoration was done in a manner to preserve the original storage envelope to the back of the panel that is accessed by releasing the twin brass swing clasps at the top of the lid interior. Attached to the wood of the lid interior are the original two columns of leather‘pockets’ and the original network of webbing to hold small notes/cards…all in what can only be described as being in exceptional condition! The front of the box folds forward to reveal the main writing surface. The leathers of the box have an‘antiqued’ finish with both gilt and blind embossed features that certainly enhance the appearance of the piece. This auction is for a Fantastic Rare Antique Marquetry Secret Sewing box. In the shape of a Bible. The spine of the book, opens up to reveal the sewing box. The tray at the back of the box has been pushed down one corner( I did not attempt to try and pry it back up, but there is room to slide something in there, to pull it back up into position) The two center boxes have flaps, that lift up, they are decorated, quite detailed,with a man and lady, looks to be etched into the wood. Either side are the spools, a total of four. The front compartments, features a pin cushion, which lifts out, to reveal, two secret boxes at the front of the Sewing Box. Beautiful Patina, with gorgeous Marquetry Work on both sides of the box& spine. Condition is good, but it does have loss of veneer to two of the corners on both sides, also some loss of veneer ... moreto the spine/ drawer of the box. The wooden box, we think it is walnut, features brass hardware, as you can see in the photos, the lock, the inset on the cover, and straps around the corners, etc. The box measures approx. 13 ⅝" by 8 ¾" by 5 ¾" standing approx. 19 ¼" tall with the stand. When you open the desk. You can see the desk top panels are covered in a textured black paper with gold gilt trim. The finish of the wood has a wonderful glow to it, along with signs of age and use, such as surface scratches and little nicks, as well as mystery stains. A very handsome late William IV or early Victorian writing slope or lap desk dating to around 1830/1840. Made from Rosewood. The box is beautifully brass bound with a quality screwed construction and flush military style handles either side. The top is inset with a shaped brass cartouche retaining the original initials of the original owner, I think H W. The top has some old marks/ bruising which I have shown purely for accuracy. The box opens to reveal a leather writing surface with gold embossing, there is storage below both top and bottom sections for stationery and letters. The brass pin to the side can be removed to open the side drawer running the width of the box. This puzzle box probably dates from 1950 to 1970. The front picture has a house near the water with a boat in sail with the backdrop of Mount Fuji. A home for a rich and wise man. Push them both in the Up position, and then take the small leather tab to open this area. Here again is an area for either writing paper or other items you wish to put there? Closing the lid back to the original position and pushing the locks back to the Down position secures it from moving. Now if you turn the box around you have a very comfortable writing area that measures approx. 16.75" wide by 15" deep. There are some knocks and scratches and some splits to the veneer on the lid but really nothing that detracts from the quality of this box. Stamp slope pen tray and lidded compartment for spare nibs etc. The secret drawers are accessed by removing the timber panel below the inkwells by pulling it forward. It retains almost all of the original finish and the brass has a dark patina. The leather on the writing surface looks original. The lock is a very old replacement. It is broken but still has a working key. The key will come inside the desk. I believe the desk is built with blind dovetails because if it were not it wouldn't be holding together so well. The secret drawers are below the little compartments along the front of the desk. The mechanism to unlock the drawers stll works very well. You just lift up on the section between the little compartments and the board hiding the drawers pops out revealing two drawers. A gorgeous 19th Century(Regency era? burr walnut folding travel desk with brass inlay and two secret drawers. At the top of the writing surface are three compartments for stamps. Inkwell and pens. Included is the original inkwell with brass cap, and writing instruments and accessories which came with the box. There an open storage area beneath each half of the writing surface and a panel that hides two secret drawers, which are accessed by the careful removal of panels next the inkwell to activate the release spring. Condition as noted above: This writing slope is in very good to excellent condition for its age. The exterior wood and brass inlay and hinges are in excellent condition. NOTE: the key is missing. The interior is in very good to just shy of excellent condition. The brass hinges all work fine. The secret compartment latch and boxes ... moreall work fine. Mid 1800’s campaign style burr walnut writing box in fine condition. Excellent mellow unspoilt patina. Four inlaid brass corners pieces to each vertical with inlaid brass straps that extend down the back of the box. Originally the brassware on antique boxes was mainly for the purpose to protect and support the box but as boxes became mass produced and more available to the masses the inlays tended to become more for decorative purposes and later writing boxes with brass inlays tended to have less brass hence some had corner pieces…some straps and often the straps would not extend down the back of the box. Please note the patina of the brassware on this item that contributes considerably in giving the box the‘right’ antique appearance. Original inlaid brass cartouche and escutcheon. Top closes square on replacement brass hinges. The interior ... moreof the box features the usual office section for a box of such dimensions(approximately 12” x 9” x 6” i.e. Stamp slope. Dished pen tray with storage space beneath and single inkwell section complete with what is believed to be the original inkwell in good condition. The lock is in good working order, is stamped with the marks of a known maker of the period and comes complete with a replacement working key. The leather slope surface has been professionally replaced and has both blind and gilt embossed features. The fold lines have been strengthened as was the practice when the box was made. Both storage areas beneath the writing platform are in fine condition. The box features two secret drawers accessed by raising the divider between the inkwell and stamp slope sections whereupon the concealing panel springs open. I would not go as far to state that it is rare to find secret drawers on a box of such dimensions of the style but it is quite unusual. LARGE Walnut Campaign Style Writing Box. Secret Drawers. C1870 (Ref 2769)
Large walnut campaign style walnut writing box made during the third quarter of the 1800’s in fine condition. Measures approximately 18” x 10” x 7” This box has a particularly mellow unspoilt patina that certainly gives the box the‘right’ antique appearance. Attractive figured grain with slight burrs. There are a couple of TINY pieces of replaced veneer by the lock(I do mean TINY…approximately 1/8” x ¾” and they certainly do not detract from what is a fine looking box. Inlaid brass straps. Corner pieces, cartouche and escutcheon…all complete. The box closes square and true. Hinges, twin sliding slope clasp and lock all in good condition. A working key is supplied but is a tad fiddly and it is recommended that a replacement is obtained if security is an important requirement. The box opens to reveal an impressive interior. Standard‘office’ ... moresection comprising of dished pen tray with storage space beneath, stamp slope and twin inkwell sections complete with a matching pair of replacement inkwells in A1 condition. There is a tiny piece of replaced veneer opposite one of the sliding slope clasps…once again TINY…smaller than those by the lock and as can be seen from the photographs it barely notices and is nit picking to the extreme! Both storage areas beneath the writing platform are in very clean condition. Access to the three secret drawers is via the usual method of raising the divider between the inkwell and stamp slope sections whereupon a concealing panel springs open. The box has the added bonus of still having the original leather. It is of course split between the two box sections(the only line exposed to the elements when the box is closed) but the edges are crisp and therefore can hardly be seen when the box is fully opened. More importantly the leather is intact across the fold lines where the two boards are attached to the box carcass therefore ensuring that both boards remain in position when opening the box or accessing the storage sections and secret drawers. F or your consideration is this beautiful antique lap desk in very nice condition. The wood is most likely walnut and it has a great luster to it. What makes this piece really unique is the secret spring loaded door compartment underneath where the ink and pens would be stored. It can be opened by opening the case and then undoing the latch. The corners are rounded ... moreand seamed together. Very nice wood and graining. The inside folding pieces are still all there as well. The hinges are all there. The lock is with the case, but not the key for it. The top of the inside of the desk has a green felt fabric on one side that is pretty worn and is missing on the other side. Top of the case has a split in it on the right side that runds for about 5 inches. Probably from the case being drop at some point in its' life. Rest of case looks pretty good. There is a great looking brass insert on the top of case. The brass corner and support pieces on this case are all in place. They add a lot of elegance and character to the piece. The secret spring loaded compartment area has the spring board come off when the latch is released on one of the top drawers and then the 3 pull knob drawers are accessible. Both sides of the lap desk open for storage. Has open areas for two ink bottles in the well areas. One on the left and one on the right. The bottom of the lap desk has felt that is coming off. Estate found early nineteenth century(circa 1830) English Rosewood lap desk with triple brass stringing, secret compartment and drawers, and two glass inkwells. It measures 6-1/2” high x 18” wide x 10” deep. The interior has a restored deep maroon leather skiver with gilt accents, a storage compartment accessed by a pull-tab revealing a secret compartment and drawers and a fitted interior to include a long compartment with lid, a smaller lidded compartment, two wells with glass& hinged brass lid ink bottles and one sloped stamp compartments flanking a pen tray. Under the concave pen tray is a secret storage area that can be accessed by pushing downward on the top right corner of the tray(see photos) The panel that covers the secret drawers is loose, will need tweaking by the new owner. Some of the brass stringing along the top of the box has lifted off of the box(see photos) The finish is smooth and satiny to the touch with a warm, mellow patina– the grain of the rosewood shows through beautifully. Antique traveling writing desk. Believed to be civil war era. Officers desk. Beautiful wood and lovely to just look at with the brass corners. Writing desk closed is 19.25 x 10 x 6.5" Comes with one antique glass ink bottle, without the cap. There are carry handles made of brass that fold flush against the desk when not in use. There are two special features, TWO secret compartments. Open the writing area. Remove a corner peg and out pops the specret compartment with two drawers. I was told the three knobs are ivory and appear to be original. Remove the large brass pin inside. And open the brass handle on the outside and another secret comparment. A drawer that is the full length of the desk. The writing board will need to be reattached in the center where the fold is, but the piece of ribbon to lift the writing board is still intact. ... moreThe hinge needs attention. and the other hinge is missing. The brass plate for the key on the front of the desk is not there. There is no key. The fabric on the writing surface appears to be original. The brass corners and the brass handles also appear to be original. There is a brass plate inlaid on the top, no inscription, and this is orignial I am sure. The wood has some cracks, but I really think this adds to the character and given the age, not a detraction. This would make a wonderful gift for that special writer or poet in your life. There is something about using a piece of history that gives you a special approach to writing. Now I am not a writer, but love antiques and was graced with two beautiuful writing desks, and only have room for one. This graceful desk will be packed and shipped with great care. Antique Miniature Mahogany Handmade Chest of Drawers w Mirror 2 Secret Drawers
Antique miniature cabinet or chest of drawers with nine drawers and a mirror plus four more tiny drawers behind a secret compartment. Handmade and built with the quality and materials of fine cabinetry with great attention to detail. Drawers are dovetailed. Drawer pulls seem to be brass(magnet does not attach) there is crown molding on the top part. The wood is all solid wood-probably walnut or mahogany. No plywood. The mirror which is inset in the upper portion is a real mirror(not metal) and is clear and clean. The bottom two drawers have a darker wood decorative inlay(perhaps ebony? as the escutcheon. These two drawers have a working lock. I do not have a key. A special feature is that there are two secret compartments: hidden behind and inside each of the top two drawers there is a removable panel that when removed reveals two additional ... moretiny dovetailed drawers on each side. The removable panels are built in such a way that they accommodate the tiny drawer pulls on the hidden drawers. The piece measures 14 3/4" tall x 6 1/2" deep x 11" across. And weighs 7 1/2 pounds. It is in excellent original vintage condition. With a beautiful finish and patina and no stains, scratches, wear, damage that I can find. On one of the inside top drawers, on the back upper side corner, there is a small patch or repair(1" long x about 1/8" which seems to have been done a long time ago. Also, I do notice that there are several tiny brads(nails) in the back panel, which might have been a later addition or repair. This is a very special piece. In excellent condition.
