The flame mahogany looks incredible. With a rich complexion and a pronounced grain that are sure to complement any setting. The writing surface is inlaid with rich brown leather bordered by gold tooling-which was replaced during a recent restoration that also included a new coat of hand-rubbed wax. In total, this desk features three drawers and two cabinets on one side, with seven standard drawers and a file drawer on the other. Conveniently this desk disassembles quite easily: like all pedestal desks, the top simply rests securely on the two pedestals. Some of the surfaces show some minor wear marks, particularly on the feet, but they are very minor indeed, so overall condition is excellent, especially for a desk from this period. We are offering a wonderful. Unusual victorian ladies writing desk. The desk is made of cherry and has flame mahogany inserts in the doors as well as flame veneer on the drawers. The center pulls out to reveal a writing surface with a leather insert. It has a mirror on the back in the center section which appears to be the original. It has two drawers which slide in and out beautifully. The entire piece has been recently restored and looks beautiful. The top can be removed from the base for easier and safer shipping. It might be oak or mahogany. But whatever it is it's very nice. It has a little drawer below the writing slope area. The slope folds out and has a leather surface, this may have been replaced at some point. The hinges on the side also don't look original and were probably replaced. You can tell around the hinges where the wood failed and they replaced the hinges. The top flips up too to allow access to the slots for papers and envelopes that is in the back. Behind the writing slope is a wider area to hold other things. We've tried to show how the whole thing works in the first five pictures. The top has a lock but it doesn't ... morehave a key. The drawer has a lock on it and it does have the key as you can see in the pictures. It's very nicely done. The drawer is dovetail mortised on the sides. It's a very nice size and would be fairly portable if you needed it to be. It measures 14.5" W x 9.25" D x 10.25" H. The slope part is 13.75" H by 13.25" W. It weighs 9 lbs. The rectangular top has rounded corners and an adjustable center section inlaid with a brown leather panel decorated with gilt tooling. Flanking the center section are two hinged panels which open outward to reveal compartments. One open and the other with dividers. The front of the piece has a frieze center drawer with its original brass lock. Flanking this center drawer are two keyholes and locks which secure the compartments above. The side opposite the drawer has a slide which pulls out to provide a second writing surface. The table stands on beautiful leaf carved trestle feet with concealed brass ... morecasters. This is a superb large mahogany writing desk bureau made in England circa 1850. The condition is very good. The desk is far better than the pictures suggest. It has all the original brass handles the drawers are run fine and are solid oak with dovetail joints. It sits on bracket feet and has the original carrying handles to the back. The center door to the inside has the original key. Measurements are 44 wide. 44 high, 24 deep.

First. The pictures do not do justice to the beautiful piece of work. It's a Flame Mahogany Writing Desk with overhead 2-Door bookcase and single Drawer below. This piece was estimated to have been made in the 1800's and is in remarkable condition. The inside 2 drawers are hand dove-tailed. The bottom wide drawer is hand dove-tailed as well. The bead work along the front doors and along the top is in excellent condition and beautifully done. This great piece of furniture hows signs of age as you can see in the close up picture of the zipper-like crackle in the veneer, but, there is no separation. The desk measures 80" at the peak and is 39" wide and is mounted on 4 turned legs. The depth at the top is 11" and is 18-1/2" for the drawer section. One picture show the top of the piece and another shows the 4 separate ... morepieces which form the back. There are 4 boards shown in the'back' picture. Cherished and not abused, from a non-smoking home. My parents bought it in Charlottesville, VA in the early 1970s. Beautiful striped veneer vertically across the slanted top. In exceptional condition for the age. Some small losses and light cracks in veneer, very small, I'm happy to send photos. Slant top desk that has tight brass hinges and longer elaborate hinge guides on each size of the slant plank Lovely inside. With drawers, and scalloped/scrolled cubbies. Four horizontal drawers. Measures approximately 53-1/4" ... morewide. 29"tall at bottom of slant/40" tall, and 19" deep at fold of slanted area, top is 8-1/2" I was just researching the dovetail joints on the 4 large drawers to see if I could better date this desk. The dovetails are not hand cut and irregular. But are consistent. Online I found this description: A close inspection shows no irregular saw cuts or variation from a skilled craftsman, but rather a precise and identical manufactured machined joint. These machine-cut dovetails are as strong and long lasting as the hand-made joints, and became the standard of better American furniture ever since the late 1890's. So this desk may be very late 1800s or early 1900s. Another indication is that the back is not multiple boards. But appears to be an early plywood? There is a tiny hole drilled in the back where I think my dad had our phone(land line) cord come in so the phone could be in the desk. Regardless, it is a beautiful old desk. Fine Brass Bound Mahogany Travel Writing Desk Ship Capt Signed James London 1814
Antique Ship Captain's Writing Desk Estate find from the home of a collector with with a New England family provenance. This is a large heavy Ship Captain's Traveling Writing Desk. It has decorative brass bound corners and edges, side handles, lock front and inscribed monogrammed plaque on top with the initials"JL" Inside there is a top surface piece that fits into the top with a small latch(the second latch is missing) Both the top and bottom inside pieces have crisscrossed ribbons on one side to hold paperwork. In the front is a rows of compartments- two small ones have lids and the center longer section has a curved wood lid with a handle. On the reverse side of this longer lid there is writing that says"James London August 1814" There is another name in the middle but I can't make it out. There is a Brass ... morepiece on the side that lifts up to hold the top of the desk up. The one on the other side is missing. Under that piece is a small brass dowel that when lifted out allows for a bottom drawer to be opened and pulled out- the drawer runs the length of the inside of the desk. Beautiful Mahogany Wood finish on the outside. In very good condition for the age. There are some small missing parts inside, but the piece can still function as a travel desk. Makes a beautiful display piece and collectible. Inside the desk was an early newspaper article about a Captain John Julius Guthrie who was the executive officer of the sloop of war Saratoga who captured a slave ship at the mouth of the Congo River in 1861. It says this was the last slaver captured by an American warship and the captain then resigned and entered the confederate service. The article is a letter to the newspaper written by the son of the captain and he points out that the slave ship was owned, manned and equipped in the city of Boston, Mass. It is possible that the desk was later used by this man, but I am not sure- it was left in the desk, and I can include it if the buyer is interested. Desk measures 20" long. 11&

Antique Burl Mahogany Travel Writing Desk Estate find from the home of a antique collector. This is a lovely burl mahogany wood travel writing desk. It has a beautiful patina and wood grain pattern. There is a monogrammed brass plaque on the top. Inside there is a top is some very nice cut out wood that has compartments to hold paper, etc. Behind the wood cutouts there is a light blue fabric which is partially missing in the middle. One of the small pieces of wood that acts as a divider is also not in place but I do have the loose piece of wood and will include it. Once opened. The bottom piece has a curved removable pen holder and two small sections possibly to hold ink wells. The bottom piece flips forward to reveal two writing surfaces, both of which lift up to reveal storage underneath. There is a lock on the front but I do not have a ... morekey. There is a crack in the frame of the upper writing surface but it is not loose. There are age cracks in the top(which is tight) and a wider one across the bottom that you can see in the picture of the bottom. There is also two pieces of the very narrow edge molding on the outside top, and one on the corner front bottom that you can see in the pictures. A wonderful antique. Circa 1890's- 1900's, Louis XV style writing table in mildly stripped mahogany veneers, the legs of solid mahogany. There are three drawers to one side, the other side with three faux drawer fronts. There are elaborately cast heavy bronze mounts, the leg corners with lady figureheads. The top has a single piece of black leather having stamped gilt borders. Table measures 2'6" 30-1/2" tall by 5'9" 69" wide by 3'1" 37" deep, the leather 5'1" 61" wide by 2"5" 29" deep. From floor to bottom of center drawer is 23-1/4" tall. Excellent condition: mahogany legs without chips or cracks, veneers all around are complete and original finish. for auction is a very nice antique mahogany signed r. j. horner kidney shaped carved writing desk. i suppose it is a ladies desk. at any rate. It has some very nice features which include five carved drawers with shell shaped pulls. it also has cabriole carved legs that end in nice claw feet on all four feet and legs. the mahogany grain is very nice and pronounced over the entire desk. a very heavy piece for its size. it is 48.5 inches wide, 24 inches deep at any particular place across the kidney shape. it stands almost 32 inches tall with casters, i expect it would be about 31 without casters. the knee hole is about 18 inches wide and 25.5 inches tall. it is very solid and in great antique condition. the legs had a little wiggle to them when i got it a long time ago and i reglued all of them. to my knowledge all the carving is in tact. ... moredrawers open nicely. a very nice and somewhat rare piece. actually i have never owned or seen another kidney shaped horner desk. i am sure there were several made but i have not seen any other than this one. a very versatile piece which can be used in about any room in your home. desk may be picked up at my home or shipped at buyer's expense. i can help arrange shipment should that be beneficial to anyone. good luck. Today it would make a wonderful little writing desk or side table. Originally this washstand was used with a large bowl and jug on top. People would wash their hands and face there either in the morning after waking or before a meal. It is made from a lovely selection of mahogany wood that has developed a very attractive patina since ... moreits construction. Complimenting the wood are lovely brass pulls and a brass escutcheon. While there is a lock present in the single drawer. There is no key. The drawer is constructed with hand cut dovetails, a sign of age and authenticity. On the top you will notice a mahogany cross band and ebony string inlay around the edge. This is a common and attractive feature from that era. The top also has a small back splash that does not remove. We have rated the condition of the washstand/ desk as fair because of the cosmetic condition of the top. Structurally the piece is sound and strong. It will last for many years to come. The top does show an age split. Ring in the finish, a dark patch in the back right corner, and various small nicks here and there. None of these compromise the structural integrity of the washstand and do add character and history to the piece. This is an amazing Slant top secretary writing desk in great condition! It is antique white painted over genuine mahogany and gold painted edges for added detail! This is a very nice mahogany with satinwood inlay American writing desk. to the top behind the door there are drawers with pigeon holes. To the base there are there drawers to either side they are there compartments for keeping bottle of drinks. It has the pull down flap for writing with a green baize. Antique American Mahogany Writing Desk Bureau with Brass Handles Made in 1800s
This is a very nice very heavy Desk Bureau made in USA circa 1820. There are a few little repairs to the flap but the rest of the desk is pretty good. The colors is a brown and slightly reddish. The drawers and the flap has satinwood string inlay. There are small areas were some is missing, it sits on splayed feet and has brass handles which may not be the original ones. The back and the drawer linings again are all original with dovetail joints to the drawers. Its fitted with 2 envelope drawers to the interiors and many small drawers with a few small brass handles missing. But we will try and find these before its sold. The slides work fine to support the flap. Measurements are 42 wide 20 deep. 43 high. Antique Federal Writing Desk in Tiger Mahogany, with Two Small Drawers
Very old. Very classic desk from the early 1800s in, I believe, tiger mahogany. It's not a museum piece but it has been a beloved piece that has been used, with care. I've tried to capture the beauty of the wood on the top in my pictures. All the edges are slightly rounded from use and there are a few minor scratches and nicks, commensurate with its age and use, but its quality shines through. The desk stands. At its tallest point from the backboard to floor, 34" and the desk top is 28 1/2" from the floor. The top is 36" across and 18 1/2" deep, excluding the backboard which adds another 1/2" 19" total) It has two small drawers that sit on each side of the top, 3 1/4" tall, and their platforms measure approximately 10 1/4" by 10 1/4" The outsides of the drawers measures 2 3/8" by 9" ... moreand the insides measures 1 7/8" high by 8 1/4" across by 8 3/4" deep. The desk has its original brass handles but they've seen the greatest wear. With one slightly bent and the other with a small crack. Very similar handles replaced these, as you can see in the last picture. This desk has been in the family for 60 years and has been treasured for the entire time. I'm now having to downsize my mother's estate and I'm hoping someone will love and care for it as we have. I did my best to capture the style and quality in pictures.
