The front drawer faces are executed in a bookmatched fine grain facing. We almost always encounter these pieces after they have had an alcohol or thinner cleaning done back in the 19th or very early 20th Century. The boom in the early 19th Century economy of Boston is directly tied to the import& manufacturing of goods connected directly to the Clipper Ship Fleets. The fine furniture produced, as this work table here, was exported all over the world. Some surviving ship's manifests have North Shore furniture being exported as far away as China. We strongly feel this work table was made by the Appletons of Salem. Fine work tables are a specialization of ours and we probably have more in our inventory than any other operation on the east coast. It has three Ogee profiled drawer made with brilliant flame mahogany veneers. The bottom's half drawer was originally equipped with a sewing bag that hung suspended to the bottom drawer. These never survive since cloth disintegrates over a few centuries. If you see a hanging bag on a period work table it has been replaced at some point in the 20th Century. Fine American Federal Period Sheraton Pembroke Table New York c. 1810-20. Crafted of magnificent solid mahogany boards, entirely original! Item# 120011RYI24 This listing is for a remarkable and very fine Sheraton Pembroke table of the Federal Period. Crafted in New York during the first quarter of the 19th Century. It is a magnificent work, using the most incredible solid mahogany boards available for the overall presentation. Each leaf is a very broad single plank of full grained glowing mahogany, the middle most board a full 21 1/4" across the grain; each was flawlessly planed by hand until the surface was perfectly smooth, at which point a french polish was applied. This is a labor intensive and difficult finish to apply, layer after countless layer of shellac being rubbed into the surface by hand, but when done properly the result ... moreis breathtaking. The surface absolutely shimmers, the deep reds of the mahogany glowing through with utter brilliance. The leaves are notched and rounded. Giving an overall"cloud" form to each hanging surface, these lifting over hand forged iron hinges with entirely original screws. The top projects just slightly over the front, lining up perfectly along the sides such that the leaves rest squarely against the frame when in dropped form. One side of the table has a faux drawer with cockbead molding around it. The other side has a very deep drawer without cockbead molding, both having bold original polished brass stamped handles. Inside of the drawer. A white label is affixed on the left side from a dealer who once carried the table"Edwin C. We would like make the point known that we have never quite seen a piece like this before. It comes from a North Carolina estate that was brought back East to liquidate. We are not a liberty to disclose anymore than that as to its provenance. Our company brings four highly experienced dealers to the table. We are all torn as to the origin of this piece from Portsmouth. NH, Boston, NYC and Virginia. We are certain of the fact that its an outstanding quality piece in great condition with no damages or repairs. Please note that we took these pictures coming off ... morethe truck. It was 6 degrees that day and the waxes on mahogany pieces cloud up in the cold. We noted a whitish mark on the top of this piece in the pictures that is not truly there and caused by the waxes reaction to the severe cold. We wanted to get the load back into a stable heated environment as fast as possible. The molded edge top on this table is made from a huge robust piece of old growth solid crotched mahogany plank(probably Cuban) with the best figuring. A plank of that quality was worth more than gold to furniture makers in the Colonial Colonies during this period. It's pedestal employs superb ring or spool turnings and acanthus carving. Each of its three spider legs are gracefully formed, molded and employs continued acanthus carving. At this size this piece classifies as a tea table or small breakfast table. We are putting a real number on this piece not based on what it could be as opposed to our substantial investment in it. Very nice example of an early drop leaf table. Solid Mahogany top and legs. Thick crotch veneer on the drawer front and rear side. Nice leg detail in the turnings, no repairs. Leaves are each from a single board. Secondary wood is pine with the gates being birch. Hinges are three per side and all original including the screws. The rule joint on the left hand side hinge closest to the drawer has some break out( see photo) The drawer pull is a Chippendale style replacement(not period) Originally this was a single hole drawer pull. 29" high 38" long, 52" wide with the leaves up 21 1/2" with the leaves down. Antique Solid Mahogany Sheraton Drop Leaf Table Circa 1830's-40's This very lovely antique solid mahogany Sheraton drop leaf table has a real rich variegated dark and light mahogany color. Nicely hand carved legs with the original brass castors and the leaves have rounded corners. The table is 29 inches high, top fully extended is 40 by 52 inches, 18 inches between the side legs and 24 by 40 inches when leaves are down. The condition of this table is very good with no breaks, cracks or damages of any kind, only a few mere wear and age scratches on the top, hardly noticeable.
