Description: This listing is for an English Regency Period Tilting Mahogany Breakfast Table. C. 1800-25. It features an incredible dark mahogany top of extremely wide proportions, using two boards to span the total depth of 36 1/4" the first board is 31 1/4" wide, the second 5" To simply imagine how large the tree used to make this board would have been is astounding, and to capture the most beautiful compact grains as found in this board is admirable. The surface is heavily polished over an early finish, both with a wonderful original patina throughout. The edge of the table top is reeded, completing the design of the top with clean lines. It is a tilting top, allowing it to be stored easily, usually in the corner ... moreof a room in a way that is visually delightful, the third leg pointing into the corner with the board facing the room. A stretched frame beneath the table forms a box of the crossbars, locking together using through-tenon joinery. Original screws lock this undisturbed frame to the underside of the table, holding the wooden dowels from the pedestal inside for a smooth rotation. Original undisturbed brass catch hardware remains functional beneath the table to lock the table in a rested position. The base of the pedestal is oak over pine, with the pedestal tenoned through both, the front with a pair of original brass receivers with what appear to be original screws. A wonderful turned pedestal of solid mahogany is designed with a short shaft over three tight turned rings over baluster turnings before flowing into sabre-legs. Each leg is capped with brass hardware, each with original screws over large original caster wheels. The legs of the table are locked in place with a Y bracket, flowing along each leg and into the center to give a high pressure joint flawless strength even 200 years after introduction. This is a stunning table for any collector of 19th Century English furn

POSSIBLY FROM CHANNEL ISLANDS This beautiful tilt-top mahogany breakfast or centre table dates to the mid-19th century and is English. It was possibly made in the Channel Islands. Which are situated in the southern portion of English Channel off the coast of Normandy. The round top has an unusual scalloped or wavy edge with a recessed wavy-edge apron. It stands on a elegantly acanthus carved column ending in a triangular platform base with three large carved paw feet and concealed casters. The table measures 50”dia. x 18-¼”h. Condition: The table has the expected minor wear. Rubbing to the finish, dings and scratch commensurate with its age. There has also been a couple minor repairs to the carving on the base and feet. The top is of single board construction as are the leaves. The edges are reeded. Each leaf has two carved supports and three iron hinges. The skirt boards are dovetailed. The turned column is supported by reeded legs sitting on brass paw feet with brass casters. The bottom of the legs and column are strapped with steel and fastened with screws. The drawer has a craved out bottom for grasp. It never had a pull. It has hand cut dovetail joinery with a chamfered bottom. It has cock beading on the front and the secondary wood is oak. A Regency Period breakfast table from England during the first quarter of the 19th Century. Both the craftsmanship and materials are of pristine grade. The top is crafted of two very broad planks of solid mahogany, each selected for vibrant flamed grains with brilliant depth and figure. They are perfectly joined to create a nearly invisible seam, secured further from the underside with dovetail butterfly joints for a permanent and unchanged joining. The surface is gorgeous, a fine high polish bringing ... moreout the most from the top. The edge is reeded around the entire perimeter of the table. The top tilts on a dowel system beneath the table, releasing with a large brass mechanism with dual-catch clasps at the pedestal head, allowing it to be comfortably and easily stored along the wall or in a corner. This was an important element in formal homes of the late 18th and early 19th century, where furnishings would constantly be moving to suit the needs of parties, guests and casual occasions. By allowing the top to tilt, the table could be prominently displayed in an empty corner when not in use, allowing it to be a stunning addition to the overall interior while preserving space. The pedestal is relatively plain. Turned and tapered into sabre form reeded legs that terminate in brass capped caster wheels, each fully original and functional. The wheels were important, allowing it to be efficiently cleaned around and under by rolling it along the hardwood floors. A 19th century Pembroke table with one drawer and a false drawer on the other side. It measures approximately 28" tall and 37-5/8" long. With the leaves closed. It is about 21.75" wide. Each leaf adds about 10.75" so, a bit less than 43.25" in total with both leaves open) We do not know the maker. There is overall surface wear commensurate with age and use, including some of dings and scratches to the surface.
