There is a name and year written on the bottom of the desk, but it is very faint and can only be seen while hold the desk at a certain angle to the light. I tried to capture the writing in a picture, but could only get the first part of the name. The name stands out the most. The rest of the writing, I believe would be where the owner lived and the year is much fainter. It looks like Maggie C Farr(something) something) 1876 or 1896. The box measures about 11 ¼” x 7 3/4” x 3 ½” closed) Opened and lying flat the desk measures about 16” long. The inside bottom felt writing surface that lifts up is tight and strong while the top felt writing surface that lifts up is wiggly, but still very much intact. Very nice old lap desk. Measuring 11.75 by 8 by 4.5 inches. This Victorian-era walnut lap desk is in excellent, recently refinished, condition. The felt on the interior writing surface has also been replaced. The lock is inoperative- at least I couldn’t find a key in my 2-quart jar of old keys. Perhaps your locksmith will have better luck. All in all. This is a very sound little desk. Neat inlays and borders. it measures 12.5 long by 8 wide by 5 tall. the inside has compartments, and hinged covers on the inside. the hinge on the left side of the top inside is loose, and the felt has disintegrated from the boards on the inside and the bottom. there is a removable pencil holder. the desk is solid and has no damage other than the broken hinge on the inside. see my other auctions for more neat old items. Antique Lap Desk: American, Federal Period
This is an extremely rare American Made grain painted slope from the 1780-1800 Period. Almost all the slopes in this period were imported from England and just a few from France. It is all original including lock(no key) Handles, hinges, and finishes. The only contemporary component is the covering on the wiriting board which was carefully chosen to duplicate the original fabric which was disintegrated when we purchased this box some two years ago(a swath of the original material is include for comparison) The condition of the box is very interesting. It shows years of use and some of it hard use. Wood is worn to groves and polished sufaces by the passing of fingers. Ink stains substantial portions of the interior wood, grease stains are evident, penciled numbers are writen on the back of the writing boards. And, five receipts and notes dating ... morefrom 1866 to 1871 have been shellacked to the back of one of the writing boards. The notes refer to purchase of horse hardware and trips with wagons to various destinations indicating that this box at one time was owned by a teamster. Surely this was the property or a fairly well to do individual initially as were most of these artifacts when new. It appears that it transitioned over time to be a working box for a person who drove horses for a living. I am sure that if only it could talk it indeed would tell some interesting stories both about our post colonial period not to mention our Civil War period. All the brass are of the proper hand made varieties for the period and the basic material of the box is white pine. Suggesting a North Atlantic origin. One of a kind for the seriouse collector of slopes. Classic 19"X10"X7" measurements. The original owner(1866-1936) was wheelchair-bound. So this desk was well used and loved. It has remained in the same family ever since. The box measures 15" wide, 10½" deep, and 5½" tall(I believe this is large for a writing box of this age) You must look at the photographs to appreciate the beauty of this piece! The top is adorn with delicate designs. Separated by thin strips of metal. Gold gilding, mother-of-pearl, and various shades of inlaid wood make up the floral/vine-like center and the borders around it. Even the ... moretop's edges feature a gold& mother-of-pearl star design. There is a diamond-shaped brass plate around the key hole; the original key is included and still works to lock& unlock the box! There is also an inlaid brass notch on the box's top to lift the lid with ease. Amazing craftsmanship! The box has a hinged lid and opens fully to reveal a rich purple velvet-covered inclined surface. The purple is now faded around the edges with age(as you can see in the photos) There are five cubbyholes. One of which is rectangular(with a lid) to accommodate pens/pencils; and four square cubbies perfectly sized for the two ink bottles(included, although one is missing the cap) as well as other writing supplies. Other features include a spacious storage area in the base for paper or small books This is opened by the pull of a green ribbon(now faded) And last(but not least) is a hard writing surface that flips down from the lid. This compartment has a small latch-mechanism to keep it shut when not in use. This box is made of a wood veneer. Antique 19th Century Sea Captains Lap Desk - Writing Desk - Inlay - Escucheons
Here for bid is a 19th century folding lap travel desk. I was told that this size of box was often used by sea captains saving room in there tight state rooms. Maybe just a theory not sure. I would consider this box desk in pretty good condition for its age and compared to others I have seen. However as you can see in the provided photos it is not perfect and has wear. Nicks, cracks and chips that one would expect to see in this old of a piece. It needs inkwell replacement so forth and so on. I have no key for this desk but they are easily found. Some of the brass or copper inlay has been tacked a few small pieces missing. This type of scowling inlay is very hard to find for they took a lot of skill and work to make I am sure. Overall this desk has a lot character and charm. The hinge is tight and closes correctly. There are several escutcheons ... morethat were with this desk which also leads to maritime. Up for auction is this beautiful 19th century rose wood lap desk. This was purchased by myself at the Ivey sellkirk auction on dec. 8th featuring items from the Stan and Lillian Musial estate. It is in great condition and absolutely beautiful. It is 9.5 inches high and 14.5 inches wide. It features mother of pearl and abalone highlights. It also has a scrolling back rail over the recessed pen and ink tray and a lidded compartment over the sloping. Leather inset hinged writing surface. Also there is a slide out drawer to the right. It has a lock on the drawer but I do not have the key. It is not locked though and opens. This is one of my favorites. I almost dont want to sell it. I hope it finds a good home. Gorgeous Antique Inlaid Writing Lap Desk
This is a fantastic old wooden lap desk with inlaid design on the top and the front. The lap desk measures 11 5/8" long x 8 3/8" wide x 5 1/8" high. The box is in antique used condition. The inlay is in very good shape. The box is done with veneer over wood. It looks like the little shield on the top and the piece around the key are done with gilding. It is worn as shown on the photos. The veneer is cracking a bit on the top front left corner and a bit on the side in the same area. There is a piece of veneer missing(about 1" long x 1/4" wide) Otherwise there are a few stress cracks in the veneer on the top. Generally the outside of the box is in good condition. On the inside of the box. There was probably velvet covering the wooden desk sections. Antique Walnut Gold Embossed Leather Top Dovetailed Lap Desk
This is an Antique Gold Embossed Leather Top Lap Desk. The wood has a beautiful patina. It appears to me that the top frame of the desk is walnut and the secondary woods of the side and back panels is pine. The back corners have beautiful hand cut dovetails as seen in a pair of closeup photos. That attest to the age and hand made nature of this piece. The desk was purchased in England. And we are pretty confident it was made there as well. We do not know the age specifically but we are pretty confident it is a 19th Century or older piece. The total size of the desktop frame is 18 3/4" x 13 3/4" The leather clad writing surface is 15" x 10" The height at the back corner is 3" Transitioning very slightly higher at the edges transition to the upper surface. The three sided framed out support measures 17 1/2" x 12 ... more1/4" The desk weighs 3 1/2 pounds and it is a substantial, solid piece. You can see the construction in the photo of the underside and the two photos of the dovetails. The three panels are attached with screws. There are some remnants of some sort of paper covering on the bottom as seen. I do not know what this was from. With the warm glow of the walnut. The beautiful leather, and the great hand cut dovetails, this fine desk would be a wonderful addition to your home for decor and/or actual use! Condition Overall. The desk is in excellent overall condition. The walnut top has a beautiful patina with dings and wear consistent with its age and use. The leather top has a couple very minor scratches that the photo flash highlighted making them more apparent than they actually are. The top is firmly and uniformly glued to the wood. In some of the photos, you can see some slightly wavy appearance that is an artifact of the original creation of the piece, but we will guarantee your satisfaction that the writing surface is as you would expect it to be. This is a Beautiful 19 th Century Traveling Lap Desk. The box is covered in a wood veneer and has an inlay circle on the lid and around the key hole. The writing surface is covered in green velvet and is original to the piece. The hinges are original and in good repair. In addition to storage under the writing surfaces. There are four compartments, one of which is covered. The bottom of the desk is covered in green felt. The box is in very good aged condition. There are few places were the veneer has broken and there are some age or shrinkage cracks to the wood(see pictures) The box is 14” across. 9” wide, and 5” tall. Another unique item from Indelible Curiosities Antique Early 19th C Brass Mahogany Lap Desk w/Hoffer Docs Fnd In Hidden Drawers Description: This lap desk contains no ordinary so-called"hidden" drawers! We purchased this at an auction only to discover when we brought it home that this mahogany with brass inlay lap desk has a hidden locking mechanism which when released springs a thin board off the inside of the desk revealing two small drawers. Like something out of a treasure hunter's dream. The hunt did not end there for when we opened the drawers we found- no, not gold coins(darn it) but several folded documents all from the early 1800s! There are four papers in total. One of which is the original instructions for opening the secret compartment, the other three are all related to one person, Selina Hoffer a.k.a. Selina James ... moreand later as Selina Hall(the latter two are her married names) Two are her original marriage certificates dated 1825 and 1834 and the third is a less formal all handwritten original document stating who, where, and when(August 26, 1794) Selina was baptized. We have scanned these separately into one pdf file and will include the original documents as well as print-outs for the buyer(happy to provide the pdf files as well) Please note the last image is of all four scanned images of the papers but combined using Adobe Photoshop into one image- this is not representative of our scanned pdf files as we did those scanning each paper separately. We will include the objects we found in the two inkwells: orange pellets which are possibly ink pellets intended to be dissolved in water and a broken into two pieces red hard somewhat flat rectangular object with what appears to be some black ink on it- possibly also dissolves or is meant for mixing ink. Condition: No key. The desk still has its original ink wells; however. The top of one of the inkwells is missing and the other fits but does not fit securely. Antique Circa 1840 Rosewood Lap Desk W/Silver Ink Bottles, Pen & Key Brass Inlay
This is a beautiful antique piece made of rosewood from circa 1840. Brass inlay on the top. Front and sides makes this piece very stunning and a great conversation piece.It comes with the original ink bottles, pen, and key. There are some small chips on the lips of the bottles but still in great condition for its age. They are approx. 1 1/4" tall with 1 5/8" x 1 5/8" diameter.The pen is approx. 6 1/2" long.The box is approx. 13 3/4" x 9 1/8" x 4 5/8" It has a crack on the top center(see pictures)See pictures for more details and let me know if you have any further questions.

Antique Mahogany Lap (Travel) Desk - ca. 1800 - w/secret drawer,ink bottle,more
Here pictured is an antique mahogany lap desk. Circa 1800. Probably English. Measures approx. 20" across x 10" wide x 6" high(closed) No key. Several compartments. Ink bottle intact but top of neck is jagged(see photo#6) Photo#4 shows a secret drawer on one side only accessed by removing the metal dowel pictured on the felt. If the desk were closed and locked the drawer would be inaccessible. The ledge on the far back of the top surface is removable as are the lids of the middle small compartment and the compartment to its far right. I believe the metal parts are brass and the knob on the middle compartment is bone of some sort. There are ink stains on one of the lower compartments(see photo#8) The wood bottom of the'secret' drawer is split. And the felt. Which seems original, is split(approx. one(1) inch) along the ... morecentral seam. There is also a'divot' approx. one(1) inch on the upper felt(zoom on photo#2 right margin) Photo#10 shows the bottom of the piece with the card of an English antiques dealer in Edgefield, SC of long-standing repute and the original price paid($325) some decades ago. Vintage Antique Wooden Lap Desk With Hinges In Good Condition
We obtained this from my mother in laws estate few years ago. My wife said that her mother inherited it from her father and her grandfather had it so this is old! It shows signs of us with plenty of scratches and dings but still functioning as a Lap desk! Has hinges that function handle is little wobbly but with some tlc can be fixed. Antique Wood Roll Top Lap Desk, Travel Writing Slope Box w Drawer, Nice Patina
Beautiful Antique Roll Top Lap Desk. Writing Slope Up for your consideration is this truly beautiful antique lap desk. Made of wood. I am uncertain of the actual type of wood but has nice graining. This is just great in every way, it is intact and very secure when completely shut and when you pull out the drawer at the front, it will open the roll top portion in the back to expose a three section area inside. Once the roll top is open, you can unfold the desk portion which flips open from back to front and leans securely on the open drawer for stability, the desk has a purple or a worn blue felt top with brass hinges. Again, the wood is very nice inside and out, the drawer opens nicely as does the roll top portion. There is a large transfer decoration on the wood desk top, there is also the very slight remains of one on the top of the roll ... moretop framed area. There are only two areas with minor problems, first is the lower right corner which is missing a small corner wood piece, and the upper left corner of the framing of the roll top where there is also a small piece of wood missing; otherwise, working very well and looking very good. There is a brass lock in place for the drawer but no key and the hinges are brass as well and seem to be original. It measures 12 1/8" wide, 9 1/4" deep, 5 1/2" tall. It is very clean, no major breaks, cracks, or discoloration. Nice patina, nice scroll design in wood at the top roll top framing, transfer decoration is wearing and almost gone on the top portion, and of course, the two missing pieces mentioned earlier. Antique 1800's Wooden Lap Desk/Writing Cabinet
Nice Antique Circa late 1800's walnut slanted lap desk/writing cabinet. Brass hinged cover flips open to a removable felt writing surface with storage for documents and paper underneath. Two individual inkwell compartments are separated by a long compartment that stores pens and other writing materials. It is removable and does need some reinforcement(gluing) One glass inkwell remains. Very good condition with a minor crack in wood where it meets the left corner. The underside panel has separated but is still intact to piece. Lock and key still work well but need some adjusting to make it lock.
