School Masters Desk ca 1865
This rarity was found near Columbus Ohio some 2 decades back and is a desk and book box used by a traveling Schoolmaster during the Civil War era. Many communities could not afford a full time Schoolmaster and contracted with a traveling Schoolmaster for education one or two days a week. This artifact was used by such a Schoolmaster to store education materials and for school room use as he traveled from town to town; it is so sized as to fit under the seat of a buckboard. It probably belongs in a museum. It is country made showing the finest possible craftgsmanship of the era and using Walnut. Oak, and Ash woods. This is a beautiful antique French partner's desk. Ca 1850. It is mahoghany and has a new leather top. The desk has 18 drawers, 2 slides and the leather top. Again which is not normal. most desks are 41" to 43" wide, this one is quite narrow. Dovetailed case. TOP, AND BOTTOM! it is rare to find these chests/desks dovetailed, let alone the base and top dovetailed. Solid Cherry Case. Again, its a very early sheraton piece, most sheraton desks have paneled sides, this is solid sides indicating it was made slightly after 1800 to about 1810 to 1815. Dovetailed drawer construction. Cherry slant lid. With Flame Burl Mahogany veneer front. Pine Drawer Fronts. With Mahogany Cockbeading, and Mahogany Flame Burl Veneers ... moreand Poplar sides, and bottoms. Cherry. Antique Mahogany Lap (Travel) Desk - ca. 1800 - w/secret drawer,ink bottle,more
Here pictured is an antique mahogany lap desk. Circa 1800. Probably English. Measures approx. 20" across x 10" wide x 6" high(closed) No key. Several compartments. Ink bottle intact but top of neck is jagged(see photo#6) Photo#4 shows a secret drawer on one side only accessed by removing the metal dowel pictured on the felt. If the desk were closed and locked the drawer would be inaccessible. The ledge on the far back of the top surface is removable as are the lids of the middle small compartment and the compartment to its far right. I believe the metal parts are brass and the knob on the middle compartment is bone of some sort. Portable Writing Walnut Desk CA 1840's
Elegant writing desk 16" long by 9" wide and is 6" in depth. Probably English in origin the leather insert has been lovingly replaced. There are three areas for ink wells plus a walnut covered area for pens. There are two separate storage boxes under ink wells. Measuring 6 3/4" times 2" in width and one inch in height. There is an age crack across bottom, see picture. This is completely handmade with brass brackets on all four corners and has original lock and carrying brackets. This is a ca.1800 Georgian Mahogany Campaign Lap Desk. It has a full length dovetailed drawer with a brass locking rod. All of the brass hardware is original. The brass lock has a working key. It is 16"x 9.25"x 6"high and weighs 7 lbs. When open it is 19" long. There is a repaired hairline crack in the lid. The writing surface is dark green felt. Being offered from estate of an avid antiques collector. Who traveled with internationally esteemed collectors and received items or advice from them, is this impressive secretary with glass hutch. In overall excellent condition, with some issues to note below. The transitional style is a result of two parts placed together, separate origin from Scotland pre-chippendale ca. 1800 era + the Georgian English desk portion. Measures 93" high x 45-1/4" wide x 23" deep overall. The hutch itself is 47" high x 43" wide x 13" deep. See photos zoomed for details and verify condition. The issues to note are: thin. Antique glass is intact but three panes have minor cracks in corners; the desk area's leather surface was removed. Is gone; the brass handles appear replacements. Not original(top 2 have loose hoops) there ... moreare no keys if intended to have them. The back panels appear to be the same wood as seen from the front. The finish is excellent. Antique American Cherry Hepplewhite Slant Front Desk. Pennsylvania, Ca. 1800 Probably central Pennsylvania. Circa 1800. The form consisting of a hardwood case resting on flared French bracket feet with four drawers(each having a lip moulded edge. Recessed brass escutcheon and wooden knobs) The verticals with an inlaid large panel of ebonized wood. The interior fitted with with a typical arrangement of pigeonholes and six drawers(three on either side) Each area separated by a strip of tiger maple veneer. A central prospect door opens to reveal an internal storage area. The wooden knobs on the drawers to the best of our knowledge are original. The interior of the drawers have a old yellow lacquered finish. Probably done over 100 years ago. MEASUREMENTS: 42-1/2" x 21-1/2" x 46-1/4" high. CONDITION: Wear consistent with age. Victorian American Civil War Lap Desk Wooden Ornate Brass Hinges ca 1860 Up for Auction is this Antique Civil War wooden writing laptop desk. It has all brass hardware and is quite ornate. It shows some age and was used. It dates ca. 1860. It has a purple velvet lining that is ORIGINAL. It has two ink well compartments a pen compartment and two large paper compartments. I did not find the secret compartment with the gold coins hidden yet. Maybe you can find it? This is an American made desk not English. It has two ink bottles that are very old. They do not match each other but they look like period pieces. The key for the brass lock was lost long ago. The ONLY replacement part is the handle for the cover of the pen compartment. It looks like a push pin. Everything else is original. Included are three quill pens. I only pictured one. The outside ... moreof the box shows wear on the veneer on one side. The large brass hinges and lock add such masculine beauty. This is a real handsome lap desk. MEASURMENTS ARE: 17" BY 12” Overall condition is very good.
