This is an antique leather jewelry salesman's steamer trunk with brass locks& fittings. There are 10 divided drawers lined in green velvet. Some of the drawers are missing part of the dividers. There are some tears in the exterior leather and a hole in the leather in the back. The case measures 13.5" wide. 21.75" tall and 8" deep. It weighs about 19 pounds. There is a bit of a musty smell. We have not checked to see if the combination lock is working as as we do not know the combination. The lock is"as is" Other then that it is in overall good condition. This is a beautiful steamer trunk made in the late 1800s. A steamer trunk is a small trunk originally designed to fit under the bunk of a steamship cabin. This trunk is extremely sturdy. In great condition considering its age, and would be a great accessory for your home. It is detailed with a floral pattern all over the trunk, and all the embellishments are in tact. The trunk doesn't have a key, but still secures by snapping up the metal hooks. Most likely RailRoad, has old stickers from traveling from state to state but there hard to read do to being old, weathered and in poor condition. Has owners name painted on side of trunk and below name Cincinnati, Ohio. Inside has blue maker tag, most of the tag is missing. Trunk is in Fair to Good condition, trunk is solid with no wood rot, All the cast hardware is good, cast iron and brass lock, some of the cast iron hardware is ornate and of good quality for the time. Front latch locks have a midevil look. Missing one wheel but the caster that holds the wheel is good. Trunk has paint loss, scuffs and scratches, rips in material, rust ect. Antique Brass Bound Jenny Lind Steamer Trunk Civil War Era
This is a very uncommon"brass-bound" Jenny Lind trunk. Jenny Lind trunks are named for the Swedish singer Jenny Lind who toured the United States from 1850-1852. They are identified by their"loaf-of-bread" shape when seen end-on. Most Jenny Lind Trunks were wrapped in steel bands with brass buttons. Less-commonly. They were wrapped in brass-bands or, in this case, steel bands wrapped in brass sheeting. This trunk is also distinctive in that the top curves front-to-back and side-to-side; most Jenny Linds curve front-to-back only. This trunk probably dates to the Civil War period as it was originally covered in paper. It has all its buttons. Which is uncommon for a Jenny Lind(these buttons are steel) It has its original lock plate and hasp(though the lock does not work and there is no key. Note the last photo is a composite ... morewhich shows the lockplate from behind and the hasp) The trunk also has its original wooden handles and metal handle loops. The trunk was missing its tray and upper door when I got it; I have remade these with wood from an historic home torn down near here which has been planed to the appropriate thickness. I have done some other repair work to make it functional and sanded down the wood. I have not applied any finish; will leave that to the buyer. The trunk has some issues. As you will see from the photos. Some of the brass banding has torn away. There is a crack across the lid(which does not affect it structurally) The trunk has had several sets of hinges over the years. The wood is chipped, dented, discolored, worn, and very dry. It is a true antique and will have to be treated as such- carefully. Please ask all questions before bidding. Shipping in the lower 48 Unites States only. Trunk will be well-wrapped and boxed. Flat Top Leather Handle Wooden Slat Brass Hardware Steamer Trunk Chest
Notes/Observations: See Photos. Grand old trunk. From the research I have done and the travel labels that are on the trunk. I would say this is c1920s and saw a lot of action on American railways. This is a Flat Top trunk. Which makes it particularly good for use as a coffee table. This trunk has Wooden(oak) Slats. Which now have a rich patina from years of use. The lock is open and appears to be functional. But we don't have the key. The edges of the trunk are leather tacked into the wood. There is one area where the leather has split. Some additional tacks will handle this. The exterior surface of the trunk is fabric over wooden construction. The fabric is holding up very well. No fraying or missing pieces, The corners and some of the edges are metal bound. The metal has a nice dark patina. The leather handles on the ends are split. ... moreNew leather is needed there. If you restore this trunk. Then I hope you get a leather worker to make new straps(which would look great) Bottom of the trunk has wood slats over metal sheets. Inside. The fabric covering is in bad shape. The interior does not smell musty, Nice trunk. And a good item to start with if you are looking for a restoration project. Also good and usable the way it is if you like an unrestored look. Overall size: 32 3/4" wide x 20" deep x 12-3/4" high One of the wood slats is in need of repair. I purchased these 6 brass parts in a box labeled'Steamer Trunk Hdw. at an Estate sale in the Pennsylvania Dutch area of Pa. And I know little about these things. These 6 pieces I believe went on the bottom of the Steamer Trunk to keep it off of the ground. Winning bidder pays shipping.

Here is my Oct 23rd 1883 patent dated steamer trunk. Made in Chicago and New York. Dimensions are 22 wide 36 long and 25 tall. It has graffiti on it and a couple of patches of canvass that someone cut out of it. It is made of wood. Canvass, iron, and brass. How cool to put a piece of glass on top of this 131 year old steamer trunk and use it as a coffee table in your living room. For the age it is good condition. It has no key. Offering this nice 1880 lock set(no key) that came off a massive and ornate Victorian trunk that was headed for the bone yard. Other than normal wear.
