This is a"Day's Patent Chimney Fireplace Screen" This was used to protect a lady's makeup from the fireplace heat. The base of the screen has a telescoping pole in which to put a folded silk screen. This silk screen fans out to form about a 12" diameter screen when the brass mounts are placed in the top portion of the base. The screen has the original label on the bottom that reads. Day's Patent Chimney Ornaments to represent Gothic architecture are so constructed that they may be used for fire-screen. Flower or scent jars, candlesticks, time piece cases, candle shades and various other useful purposes. The design on the base has an Asian feel to it. The fan measures approx. 12" in diameter when spread out. The base of the screen is in very good condition with nice patina. I have not cleaned it in any way. The fan part is in extremely fragile condition and as you can see in the picture it is in need of restoration. Once restored by the proper person you will have a fine antique to display. During my research I only came across one of these items and it was priced at over $5500.00. Of course about 100 years old and while it has been very carefully preserved, a child's toy by its very nature is unlikely to be pristine, unless purchased specifically to be stored as a future item of value. That's not the case here, this lovely horse used to sit on my timber dining table with fruit in the carriage. Possibly the world's most expensive fruit bowl! Anyway- there's multiple signs of wear. The gesso as you can plainly see is fragile and flakey, the leather and chains etc. are worn. the leather understrap has become detached at one side(I have just secured it with a small piece of sticky rather than a repair job which might not show a lot of skill) anyway I'm guessing if you like this sort of thing you'll like it regardless of its very antique status.
