Toshi Yoshida was the eldest son of Hiroshi Yoshida the renowned shin hanga master. Under his father's influence, Toshi began to learn painting at age 3 and woodblock printing at age 13. In 1925-29 he studied oil painting at Taiheiyo Art School and in 1929 traveled with his father to India and Southeast Asia making sketches for future prints. In 1936 Toshi journeyed to China and Korea. And in 1952-53 he visited the US and Europe where he exhibited works and lectured about woodblock prints. From the early fifties forward Toshi often traveled to the US, Canada, Mexico, Africa, Australia and Antarctica for sketching, exhibitions and lectures. For a few years after the war, he made prints of abstract subjects, but then reverted to prints of scenery and animals. This is a gold colored antique picture frame measuring 15x13" on the outside and 12 1/4x10 1/2" on the inside. It has wood backing and a molded front. There are two places where the front molding has been knocked off. There are also some dark age spots on the front(see pictures) When I purchased this frame many years ago. Original 13/14 Century Mongol Leather Shield
For sale an Original 13th or 14th Century Mongol leather Shield. These shields were used by the Mongol Horse riders during battle. Originally they used metal shields but this changed to leather which were much lighter and could withstand arrows and spears.This changed during the Genghis Khan period. The leather was quite strong and it was supported by brass pointed ferrules for strength. I have researched this shield through the Wikipedia web site and the exact pictures of these shields are shown and explained. For its age it is in good condition with some small peeling of the leather on one portion of the shield. It is 48cm in diam and at the back it has the original handles and padding for the riders hand. The shield is decorated in red and gold themes and has 4 brass 1.5" reinforcements on the front. They are 3' in diameter and I'm told they are from a two wheel fire extinguisher cart. Possibly an Ajax or similar in the early 1900's.
