In the summer it could be removed so the occupants could get a little breeze, if there was any. In the winter it would be put back on to stop the drafts. This bed has a shaped crest rail of gorgeous crotch mahogany, underneath the crest are three inset panels topped with Gothic style arches and half drop finials. Their are a couple of chips of missing mahogany on the headboard~see picture.The bed which was originally roped and still has the knobs. The solid cherry post are topped with flame finials. The measurements are 83 inches tall at post, 71 inches tall at headboard, 58 inches wide and 79 inches long. The mattress area is 72 inches long, and 51 inches wide. The weight is approximately 100 lbs. This is a great bed the crotch mahogany is just outstanding. This bed would add WOW factor to any bedroom. It is sturdy and ready to take its place in your home.
