For sale is an extremely rare VINTAGE and ORIGINAL sterling silver relic marked 800 silver. It has a concave glass cover in perfect condition and a beautiful silver filigree design. It is in honor of B. John Neuman EX. OSS. RELIQUARY) The first Catholic Bishop in the United States. It belonged to a gentleman named Walter Van Durn. Who lived from the 1880's until the 1950's. He worked in Florida for the Red Cross and then moved to New York City in the early 1900's to work on St. Patrick's Cathedral. He lived there for several years. I acquired the relic from his grandson, Walter Van Durn III. It is near 100 years old. I have other items that belonged to Walter Van Durn. As he was a traveled man, traveling to many parts of the world. It measures 1 1/4 inches on top and 3/4 on the bottom. This magnificent reliquary with the hand painted portrait on porcelain of St. Vincent de Paul with a piece of his black habit cloth enclosed under glass in the special relic compartment. With beautifully detailed brass holding it all, was obtained at the estate sale of a very wealthy French lady in NYC. Her family said she brought it over from France years ago as she had a great devotion to the Saint of Charity. The believe it was made in the late 1800's or early 1900's by his order the Vincentians. It is 6 inches tall from base to top of cross and 3 inches wide, in excellent condition for age, a truly rare piece of devotional art with a cloth worn by the Saint. The wax seal and threads are intact and to show the age of this relic a close-up picture of the wax seal shows some deterioration with age. RARE Estate Sale Find: Magnificent Vintage Reliquary + Relic St. Rita of Cascia
This beautiful and very rare reliquary with relic of Saint Rita was obtained at the estate sale of a wealthy Italian lady in Philadelphia. Her family did not know the history of how she obtained it. She"always had it, had a great devotion to Saint Rita" The reliquary itself is a 12 inch plaster statue of St. Rita, beautiful face with a bump on the forehead where St. Rita received the stigmata of Our Lords' thorn. It is a heavy statue, and has been damaged and repaired in the past. A close up of the neck region shows that is where the head was severed from the body, it has been repaired and seems stable to me. There are also some paint chips missing, especially at the gold base; the family told me they covered the exposed white plaster where the base was chipped with artist pigment called golden ochre, it matches amazingly well. ... moreThey did this before the estate sale. The statue weighs nearly 2 1/2 pounds, very heavy and fairly large(12 inches) The statue also has a serial number on the back bottom. The relic itself it a metal cross with the relic enclosed in the front compartment, it cant be opened and on the reverse side is an icon showing St. Rita receiving the stigmata(I have pictures of both sides above) What the relic is of I have no idea and neither did the family nor do they know when the statue and relic were"married" to create a unique reliquary and holder but again"its always been like that" but obviously the two were separate at some time. Check it out.Here's a Unique Original& most likely One-of-a-kind 3" wide by 4" long by 3/4" thick very ornately made& EARLY(Original owner dated it to the Civil War Era and it certainly looks like it could be that old) theca reliquary from the Catholic Saint Camillus de Lellis-The relic is contained in the original finely made case that contains a color image(hand painted? Don't know) of the Saint at top and has 9(NINE! different individually hand sewn relices. All with small slips of paper identifying each inset on the ornate red cloth swatch under the glass on front-The reliquary has two identification papers inside- One is handwritten in Italian and described the relics and the other is a typewritten translation(obviously done much later) titled: Translation of Manuscript relating to Reliquary of the Saint ... morePatriarch Cammillus de Lellis" that reads: I the undersigned bear witness and affirm the truth of the following. That the particles collected by me in this reliquary, ornamented with a metal consisting of copper and zinc, in the form of a double oval, in the one which is superposed appears the portrait of the Saint Patriarch Cammillus de Lellis, each of which ovals is provided with a glass cover well closed and bound together with a silk thread of a red color and sealed with my small seal impressed on Red Spanish wax.
