Oak 1780 Antique Italian Secretary Desk& Bookcase. Hand crafted about 1780 in northern Italy. An exquisite solid oak secretary desk has an arched bookcase top. The old finish with warm patina has been revarnished recently. There are various restorations plus shrinkage separations and wear on this historic furniture. Hand cut dovetail joints. Square nails, mortise and tenon joints and hand planing marks are all authentic. Locks and keys work, the drop front rests on pull out supports. Inside are 11 small drawers plus a locking compartment. Upper doors have carved pegs at the corners. Brasses are about 100 years old but not original on this very functional European country antique. Here is a fantastic original Georgian circa late 1700's English solid oak desk with gorgeous figured mahogany. The mahogany would have probably been added at a later date such as the early 1800's when figured mahogany veneer became more popular and more readily available. The pigeon hole interior has a unique look and design with lots of extra added details as well as a well interior below the writing surface which simply slides open. C. 1770-90 Item# 120411EIU26 This very fine piece almost certainly originates from the Salem or Boston work centers in Massachusetts during the last quarter of the 18th Century. Circa 1770-90. The dense and beautifully grained solid mahogany used in the desk was clearly selected with great care, the smooth and undulating lines of the boards understated and subtle, flowing from one drawer to the next and ultimately into the slanting desk surface. This is constructed with a solid horizontal plank flanked by vertical strips affixed with glued groove and tenons, lifting smoothly over replaced brass hinges and resting on the projecting ... morelopers with original brass knobs to reveal a large writing surface and gallery of nine small drawers and four scalloped cubby holes. The drawers are each inscribed for where each belongs in the scheme of the desk, in pencil 1-9, and each is hand dovetailed with chamfered bottoms rabbeting into the drawer frame. The center drawer features a wonderful sunk 18-lobed shell carved design flowing into the two drawers below it, a design common to these work centers, each drawer face carved out of a solid piece of mahogany. The case is crafted of solid single boards of mahogany along each side. Dovetailed into the parallel-grained pine case bottom and through-dovetailed at the top. The back is constructed of three large pine boards, behind which a pine bar perpendicular to the boards to support the top to the bottom, dovetailed at both ends with a screw through the bottom. Carved solid molding runs along the bottom of the case with an applied scalloped skirt pendant at the center, reinforced from the back with rounded glued blocking. Each drawer is graduated. Belgian, Dutch and Austrian cabinetmakers of the time were known for their superior craftsmanship. The original period finish is what has even turned into more conrasts as the patina has mellowed on the entire piece. Open the locking cabinet door and find an open space with the locking mechanism for the lowes small right hand drawer. And, by the way, all of the drawers are marked as to where they belong. This lower drawer will stay locked until the small mechanism is pressed to release the drawer to open. All of the drawers are covered in a really cool paper which has obviously been there for over 100 years and maybe longer. It has a very silvery look to it. American Chippendale Walnut Antique Slant Front Desk, Pennsylvania c. 1790-1815
AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT SLANT FRONT ANTIQUE DESK. PENNSYLVANIA Probably Delaware River Valley. Circa 1790-1815 Item# 1407JXE27P This is an outstanding example of late Chippendale from the Delaware River Valley region of Pennsylvania. The craftsman executing this work selected the walnut planks with great care. Utilizing a positively chaotic grain flow for the drawers and prospect door with a more symmetrical grain for the lid and sides of the case. Lifting over period brass hinges(possibly original) to rest firmly on projecting lopers reveals a rectangular prospect door flanked by document drawers and two-over-one drawers beneath four pigeon-hole letter slots. The document drawer sides are covered with period inscriptions. Much of it being accounting but also with a note in the same hand and pigment reading"August 4 1812" and ... morea somewhat illegible signature of"Ger Ryall Jr. The facade of the desk is composed of four graduated drawers with molded lipping and period brasses in the original holes(probably replacements) The drawers are constructed in the typical manner for this region. The frame of poplar with dovetails of the sides contained within the dovetails of the front and back, the bottom boards half-lapped and deeply chamfered along the edges to set in grooves along the sides and front with triangular glue blocks along the chamfered edges for permanence. The back edge is tacked with square forged iron nails. The interior of the case features three-quarter depth dust boards of yellow pine. These joined together with tongue-in-groove joinery that has long since separated and left gaps between sections. The underside of the desk is clean and solidly constructed with a large rectangular block inside each foot- the underside is apparently untouched and retains an illegibly signature in large strokes. Antique 18th Century American Short top desk (cherry?)
This is a beautiful antique American desk from the 1700s. I believe the wood is cherry. But I am not certain. We purchased this desk from a reputable(now retired) antiques dealer in Charlottesville, VA. I still have the receipt and will provide a copy upon purchase. There are professional repairs to the wood near the hinges- but this work was done some time ago. It can be seen in the photo where the desk top is opened. There is also a superficial crack on the surface of the desk, which can be seen in the same photo. As we were told when we purchased it- this was not always an antique and was actually used as a desk over 200 years ago! We recently moved and now it sits in our hallway- but it is too big to remain there. Massachusetts c. 1770 Provenance from the Israel Sack Collection w/ original label signed by Israel Sack in top drawer Held in a single collection since 1931(provenance details available upon request) Item# 409LXI13S A remarkable work of art from the Newburyport area of Massachusetts. This fine American Chippendale desk is clearly executed by a craftsman of some skill. The case is joined in a manner typical of the work center, the top with tidy exposed dovetails along both sides, the bottom board likewise dovetailed into the sides of the case. The drawer blades are set into the sides of the case behind a thin applied stile on either side, these carved with raised edges to simulate cockbead molding around the drawers. The backboards are bevelled around ... moreall three edges to set flush against the back, affixed at regular intervals with mostly original iron sprigs. Each drawer is crafted with utmost precision and care, the complex blocked drawer sawn from a very thick board in a manner that leaves the drawer light and agile while the beautiful mahogany plank maintains strength and stability. These slide smoothly in and out of the case with little friction or wiggle. The lid lowers to rest on a pair of mahogany lopers revealing an attractive fitted interior with six pigeon-hole compartments over three small drawers over two large drawers and an open storage compartment flanked by a pair of blocked drawers with half-shell carvings. A pair of document drawers flank the middlemost pigeon-hole and drawer, these with beautiful turned columns closely related to the Newburyport work center, one inscribed"William Holker/ Mooney's Block Water Street" The entire case rests over ogee bracket feet and conforming stepped molding, the lower 1 3/4" of all feet having been replaced in the early 20th century. EXCEPTIONAL AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY SLANT FRONT DESK OVER CLAW FEET Salem or Boston Massachusetts. C. 1770-90 Item# 211CKJ26F This very fine American Chippendale desk almost certainly originates from the Salem or Boston work centers in Massachusetts during the last quarter of the 18th Century. The dense and beautifully grained solid mahogany was clearly selected with great care. The smooth and undulating lines of the boards understated and subtle, flowing from one drawer to the next and ultimately into the slanting desk surface. The desk top is constructed with a solid horizontal plank flanked by groove-and-tongue vertical strips, lifting smoothly over period replaced brass hinges and resting on the projecting lopers with original brass knobs to reveal a large writing surface and gallery of nine small drawers and four scalloped cubby ... moreholes. The drawers are each inscribed for where each belongs in the scheme of the desk, in pencil 1-9, and each is hand dovetailed with chamfered bottoms rabbeting into the drawer frame. The center drawer features a wonderful sunk 18-lobed shell carved design flowing into the two drawers below it, a design common to these work centers, each drawer face carved out of a solid piece of mahogany. The case is crafted of solid single boards of mahogany along each side. Dovetailed into the pine case bottom and through-dovetailed at the top. The back is constructed of three large pine boards laid horizontally and half-lapped, behind which a pine support runs perpendicular to the boards, dovetailed at both ends with a screw through the bottom. Carved solid molding runs along the bottom of the case with an applied scalloped skirt pendant at the center, reinforced from the back with rounded glued blocking. Each drawer is graduated. Each below larger proportionally to the one above, sliding in and out of the beaded frame. You don't see them like this anymore. This must have taken months to complete. It was passed down for generations to a friend and he gave it to me for helping him move. UNBELIEVEABLE WORK. I have never seen one this nice before. Please notice that due to being over a 200 hundred years old it does show signs of wear and cracking in places. Antique Chippendale 19 Drawer Walnut Slant Front Desk American circa 1700's
For your Bidding consideration in this Auction is an Antique Walnut(the estate I acquired this from said it was walnut. Another person said it may be mahogany so please view photos) Slant Front Desk. In researching the desk, a very similar desk recently sold on Ebay and was stated to have been made circa 1770 in Philadelphia which is where I am getting my estimated date and place of manufacture from as in all of my research it most closely resembles that one. Please view photos to determine for yourself an estimate of age and manufacturer dating. The desk has 2"Secret" compartments, one is hidden as a false bottom in one of the drawers, the other hidden in the cabinet beneath one of the drawers/ May be others I haven't found. Note the large 4 bottom drawers are graduated in size and pencil numbered. Following are the dimensions: ... moreHeight: 44 inches Width: 39 3/4 inches Depth: 20 1/2 inches Weight: estimate 100-125 pounds. I do not have a good way to weigh it so this is just an estimate The condition for age overall is good. A few things to note is there are as follows: one of the brass key hold covers is missing. May have had a hinged door inside the cabinet at top, there is a very old"mouse hole" finger notch in the top drop front section giving easy access to open the desk, one of the decorative drawers inside the top section of the cabinet is missing the front and sides. I do not have a key for it. May also show a few other scratches and age related dings but overall a very solid, beautiful desk. I am offering this as pick up only as I have never packed a piece of furniture like this and would be nervous about not packing it correctly for shipping. I do work with a local UPS Store who does an excellent job though so am confident they will do a great job for you or you can pick it up or have your own shipper come and pick it up. 2014-12-07 1 SEE PICTURES BELOW Beautiful 18th century kneehole desk. I am not an expert. But I will do my best to describe it. I did have an antique furniture repairman look at it and verify what it was. But he's no longer available to help describe it, due to health problems) It is 29 7/8" tall, 32 3/8" wide, and 18 3/8" deep. I'm not sure what kind of wood it is. The 6 drawers(3 on each side) do not have the original drawer pulls. You can clearly see where the original drawer pulls went through and have been filled and repaired. see pics) Below the main top drawer is a"secret" drawer that appears to be part of the frame. A beautiful diminutive American solid cherry two piece secretary bookcase bureau with a cabinet section.possibly a country linen press?is up for auction fresh from a Charleston estate sale. There is the two door and two drawer top section over four drawers in the base section. The two doors are paneled. All of the hardware is original as are the lock sets. There is one original key. The drawers will also lock. I did not add a photo of the hand planed back boards but have such if anyone is interested. The top of the base opens up to reveal a nice work section. All of the drawers are hand dovetailed. And all surfaces were hand planed. The four shaped bracket feet are a combination of extensions of the sides and applied feet in the front. This is an exceptional American ... morepiece which is probably out of New England just after the turn of the 18th century. It is from the Andrew Crispo estate and was purchased from Eve Stone and Son Antiques which at the time was a well known dealer in an antiques gallery in New York City around 1989 and has been in storage more most of that time. Having a more slender frame than many of the desks of the period. It is an object that does not impose itself on a room, but rather it's graceful and understated form bring depth and visual interest to whatever space it becomes a part of. With a deep and wonderfully oxidized early finish, preserved under many layers of glowing wax, the vibrant grains of the solid mahogany planks utilized in all primary surfaces are shown in their best light. The case itself is of simple construction. The sides dovetailed into the bottom, the top and sides joined with a blind dovetail to leave a smooth undisturbed top surface. The slant lid falls over original wrought ... moreiron hinges to rest on a pair of projecting lopers with original shaped brass pulls, revealing a handsomely fitted interior with a pair of pigeon-hole slots with scalloped valances flanking the fluted document drawers and molded prospect door. The document drawers are inoperable from the front, these being the first clue that the entire prospect section of the interior is actually a hidden compartment- by opening the prospect door and depressing a switch hidden in the top of the open space, the entire box of both document drawers and prospect door is released to reveal the hidden access to the document drawers from the back. The rest of the little drawers lining the interior are very well crafted, each with precise little dovetails in the oak secondary woods and retaining their original knobs. The drawers of the facade are constructed in the typical manner. Feet and chalk inscription to underside Item# 411MKP15V A remarkable work of art. This fine American Chippendale slant front desk features the very desirable"oxbow" or"serpentine" facade cherished in the best pieces. Hewn from incredibly thick mahogany logs, these drawers are sawn into shape with a continuous plank to achieve the fluid movement found in the case. The top drawer is particularly difficult to execute, as this retains much more of the mahogany and not only serpentines with the case but also is faceted along the top edge. Retaining it's brilliant polished brass batwing hardware, the desk remains in an outstanding state of preservation. These are crafted in the typical manner for the Northern Shore of Massachusetts- the pine frame is dovetailed along the front and back, the bottom deeply chamfered and set into rabbets in the sides of the drawer over which a thin pine runner is applied to create the groove. The drawers are divided by drawer blades with raised edges to simulate cockbead molding, affixed into the sides of the case on either end with open dovetails; as economical craftsmen, only a few inches of mahogany line the front of the drawer blade, which is backed by several inches of pine. The interior is somewhat typical of the region. Having a stepped interior with a central half-shell carved drawer over a conforming blocked front drawer flanked by document drawers and three pigeon-hole letter compartments. OFFERING: Offering an Antique Ladies Lap Desk that has a complete original interior. The exterior is made out of rosewood and has a mother of pearl inlay piece in the center of the top surrounded with a thin piece of brass inlay. The same mother of pearl inlay with a brass surround is also on the front. The desk folds out twice for 2 different levels of use plus has a 3rd level for storage. When it is first opened the desk has a light blue interior with many small compartments. One side is a singular folder for papers. The other side is divided into many small sections for small items like paper clips or small papers. A covered container with a shell knob handle, and a covered compartment with a ribbon handle, a small pillow with the writing WILLSONS KISS ME QUICK SACHET BOSTON printed in gold and a multiple of other small compartment divisions. ... moreIn one of the covered compartments there are some lovely hand made paper doll cut-out clothes. Another compartment has two printed pieces of payment that say TWO BEECHES BELMONT MASS. It also includes a small ink well bottle with a cover. When the level with the compartments is lifted out there is another fold out section. When that is folded out there is a writing surface. It is covered in deep blue velvet that needs some restoration. Also there is a side panel that is a covered rosewood box that probably held writing utensils. On the side that has some velvet loss the writing panel can be lifed out revealing a 3rd level that is an open wooden box for storage. This is a wonderful captivating Ladies Lap Desk with all original interior. CONDITION: The exterior of the rosewood box is in wonderful strong shape.On the top of the box there is a light rippling effect to the wood veneer. There is one spot on the front of the top with a slight crack that is very minor. On the back edge there is one spot where the veneer has slightly lifted.
