The 2563 m high Schlern (Italian Sciliar, Ladin Sciliër) is a mountain in the South Tyrolean Dolomites in Italy. Despite its relatively low height, the ... morestick-like western pillar of the Dolomites is considered the symbol of South Tyrol due to its characteristic shape. The mountain is the namesake of the surrounding mountain range, the Sciliar Group. The Sciliar itself carries a plateau whose early pastoral use is attested by prehistoric finds, and towers over the Alpe di Siusi, the largest high pasture in Europe, as well as the low mountain range terraces of the Sciliar area around Castelrotto and Völs. In 1974, the Sciliar and some adjacent areas were placed under protection in a nature park, which has been expanded into the Sciliar-Catinaccio Nature Park since 2003. In the South Tyrolean.

Emerald has been cherished since about 4.000 B.C. when they were traded at the earliest known gem market in Babylon. The ancient world's source for these precious gemstones was Egyptian emerald mines near the Red Sea according to ancient Egyptian written texts dated to the life of Pharaoh Sesostris III in the 19th century B.C. the recently rediscovered“Cleopatra’s Mines” near the Red Sea. The Greeks worked these mines in the time of Alexander the Great and throughout the Ptolemaic Dynasty. The last ruler of the Greek Ptolemaic Dynasty in Egypt, Cleopatra VII, Queen of Egypt, was often depicted and described wearing fabulous emeralds mined from those same famous ancient mines. Here are two very nice, near eye clean, beautifully colored natural emerald precious gemstones from the Southern Urals of(Siberia) Russia, hand faceted into a sparkling pears in the 19th century. Emeralds are nearly 100 times rarer than diamonds, and there are few opportunities to acquire good quality natural emeralds at reasonable prices. The best specimens can bring over $40,000 a carat. These particular precious gemstones possess the crystal clear green color characteristic of good quality emeralds. Though it might be possible to make out a few imperfections upon close scrutiny, to casual inspection they are more or less eye clean. You can see in these photo enlargements that even at 500% magnif

Ruins Excavations Ancient Rome Palatine Hill Sacra Via Capitolium Circus Maximus
The Ruins and Excavations of Ancient Rome by Rodolfo Lanciani. With a New Foreword by Richard Brilliant. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 617 pages. Publisher: Bell Publishing Company; 1979) ISBN: 0517289458. The crumbling ruins of ancient Rome serve as our most tangible link to the political. Social, and military greatness of the city of the Caesars. To the untrained eye these scattered stones and tarnished relics present an unfathomed array of styles, structures, and periods. But the story behind these relics is alive with everything that is human and vital; from glorious triumph or decadent corruption to the everyday traffic and commercial flux of urban life. Concealed in these ruins is the story of the organic development of the city from a collection of small farming towns to its ultimate position as capital of the largest unified ... morestate in the history of the western world. And it is Rodolfo Lanciani who has brought this story to abundant life. As Professor Richard Brilliant states in the foreword. the author’s infectious curiosity about Rome and his delight in her remains have been so successfully served by his friendly, unpedantic style. If Rome has so clearly built on the past, our knowledge of the past still depends very much on Lanciani. The author has placed the art and the architecture of the city on a time line, reflecting the constantly evolving ideas and spirit of the civilization as they developed over hundreds of years. In addition to this chronological approach, he has considered the structures and sites from topographical and architectural perspectives. Thus three systems of organization provide the prospective traveler or student with a detailed and stimulating knowledge of the ancient city that is ideally adaptable to his particular interest or area of study. The book is divided into four sections. The first is a general consideration of Rome’s topography and the way in which the city was adapted to it. Next is the description of the Palatine Hill. On which the city was founded and

NEW Power Culture City-States Medieval Renaissance Italy Venice Florence Milan
Power and Imagination: City-States in Renaissance Italy by Lauro Martines. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with dustjacket(Knopf; 1979) 380 pages. The great Italian city-states: Venice. Florence, Milan, and the others. The particular nature of their history and culture through the five centuries of their emergence, magnificent flowering, and twilight is brilliantly explored in terms of the internal shifts of economic, social, and political power- by violence, by manipulation, by the gradual pressures of changing circumstance. And here are the life and culture and works of imagination that were created as the merchants and guilds wrested dominion from the ancient nobility, from the first struggles against the Holy Roman Empire in the 12th century through the rich cultural blaze and political exhaustion of the 16th century. Martines has drawn together ... moreand chronicled in a single fluent narrative all the explosive energies, the social strife, the civil disorder, the political violence, the economic transformations, the crises of control, the religious fervor and corruption, and the spectacular achievements of art and intellect that made and defined the city-states. CONDITION: Unread but cosmetically damaged. Knopf(1979) 380 pages. Book appears to be unread. Or read onto to page 8 or 10. However it appears that perhaps a cup of coffee was splashed nearby while the book was open to perhaps page 8 or 10. There's no real"water damage" however the top surface of the closed page edges do show some splash marks(visible of course only when the book is closed, and only to the mass of page edges) Also there are a few small splash stains to the top edge of each page.to the first ten pages of the book. Otherwise the remainder of the pages within the book are absolutely clean, unambiguously unread, unmutilated, unmarked, and tightly bound. Original dustjacket was lost, so we produced a full-color replacement printed on high-gloss photographic quality paper, enclosed in a mylar cover. It's very handsome and durable. Benea
2 Antique 19thC Handcut Topaz Medieval Gem of Long Life Earrings
Two Antique Genuine Natural Siberian One Carat White Topaz Faceted Oval Semi-Precious Gemstones. Two faceted ovals about 7mm* 5mm. About one carat each, mounted into solid sterling silver studs. DETAIL: During the medieval era topaz was believed to assure beauty. Fidelity and long life, with the ability to heal both physical and mental disorders, and to prevent death. When worn as an amulet, topaz was believed to drive away sadness, add intelligence and give courage. Here are two gorgeous Siberian white topaz semi-precious gemstones. Like clear crystal, with much the same sparkle and luster of diamonds, these are excellent quality topaz gemstones, at a minimum eye clean. The gemstones were hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the ... moreCzars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. These are high quality, transparent, at a minimum eye clean, very attractive gemstones hand faceted in the same traditional manner as have gemstones been crafted in India for centuries. The color is quite remarkable, a delicate and gentle pastel lavender. Each of the two gemstones has been set into a sterling silver stud- not silver plated- but pure sterling silver. Though the gemstones are antique, and hand matched, the settings are contemporary. Under magnification the gemstones show the unmistakable characteristics of having been hand crafted. The coarseness of the 19th century finish is considered appealing to most gemstone collectors. And is not considered a detriment, or detract from the value of a gemstone. These characteristics are not only expected of hand-finished gemstones, most serious collectors consider such gemstones more desirable, possessed of greater character and uniqueness when compared to today's cookie-cutter mass-produced machine-faceted gemstones. Unlike today’s computer controlled machine produced gemstones that approach flawlessness in a perfect finish, the cut and finish of handcrafted gemstones

History Renaissance Europe 1450-1620AD Art Culture Science Religion Trade A+ Pix
The Civilization of Europe in the Renaissance by John Hale. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 648 pages. Publisher: Atheneum; 1994) ISBN: 0689122004. In this extraordinarily rich and engaging book. John Hale has painted, on a grand canvas, what he calls"an investigative impression" of one of the highest points of European civilization: the flourishing, between 1450 and 1620, of the period we have come to call the Renaissance. It was an age that, wrote Marsilio Ficino in 1492, has like a golden age restored to light the liberal arts which were almost extinct: grammar, poetry, painting, sculpture, architecture, music. The book contains memorable descriptions of all of these. But Hale is not concerned simply with the arts: his interest is much wider. This] was the first age in which the words'Europe' and'European' ... moreacquired a widely understood significance. It saw the emergence of a new and pervasive attitude to what were considered the most valued aspects of civilized life. It witnessed the most concentrated wave of intellectual and cultural energy that had yet passed over the continent. It was also a period in which there were such dramatic changes of fortune for better of worse- religious, political, economic and, through overseas discoveries, global- that more people than ever before saw their time as unique, referring to'this new age, the present age, our age' to one observer it was a'blessed age, to another, the worst age in history" Hale paints his picture with an astonishing multiplicity of themes, people, and ideas. How did Europeans see themselves and others? What united them and separated them, both geographically and within their communities? What languages did they speak and write, and how widely? How did they fix themselves in time and space? What did they call civilized? What did they buy and sell? How did they dress and eat? What did they think about and how did they communicate their thoughts? One of the strengths of this book, which moves far beyond c

Carnelian was also believed an aid to astral travel in ancient Egypt. And Siberian shamans believed likewise. Ancient shamans believed that carnelian boosted all psychic and magical powers, especially intuitive gifts ... morelike psychometry, dowsing, clairvoyance, and astral travel. In earthquake-prone lands such as Babylon and Greece, carnelian served as a talisman of good luck. An ancient saying went, no man who wore a carnelian was ever found in a collapsed house or beneath a fallen wall" Here's a very nice quality 18th century antique hand crafted/shaped/polished dark orange carnelian semi-precious gemstone from India. This is an exceptionally nice. High quality specimen, translucent, with rich, dark orange tones– a pumpkin orange with smoky undertones. Carnelian gemstones and jewelry were extremely popular throughout the ancient Mediterranean, and maintained its immense popularity through Renaissance and into Victorian Europe. During the Roman Empire carnelian was widely used to carve cameos and signet/intaglio rings. The Romans acquired their taste for this beautifully colored reddish-orange gemstone from the Phoenicians, who traded extensively in carnelian. And carnelian was also an important trade good in ancient India. Since before recorded history evidence suggests that carnelian was one of the most favored gemstones for at least the past 10.000 years. This particular specimen i

Silver Roman Emperor Elagabalus Sun God El-Gabal AD221
Silver Roman Denarius(Successor to the“Denarius” of Emperor Elagabalus. Priest of the Ancient Semitic Sun God El-Gabal, with a Reverse Theme Depicting the Emperor Sacrificing a Bull; 221 A.D. OBVERSE INSCRIPTION: IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG. OBVERSE DEPICTION: The head of Elagabalus. Draped, horned, with laureate crown(laurel wreath) REVERSE INSCRIPTION: SVMMVS SACERDOS AVG. REVERSE DEPICTION: Elagablus in toga and with horn growing out of forehead holding a patera sacrificing over an altar. Bull at his feet, holding a cypress branch in his other hand, star in the foreground. ATTRIBUTION: Probably Stuck in Rome in 221 A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 19 x 18 millimeters. Weight: 2.55 grams. NOTE: Coin is mounted free of charge into your choice of pendant settings(shown in sterling silver pendant) And includes a sterling silver chain in your choice ... moreof 16" 18" or 20" length, details below or click) We can reverse coin in mounting if you prefer opposite side showing front. DETAIL: This is a very handsome. And fairly rare silver antoninianus, struck at the city of Rome in 221 A.D. It is in very good condition relative to the state it“began life” in. What that means is that there is relatively little wear evident from circulation in ancient Rome. The coin is in much the same condition it was in when it was struck eighteen centuries ago. One can inspect the portrait of the emperor to appreciate just how fine the condition is, and how relatively little circulatory wear is evidence. It was well struck both front and back, the strike somewhat off center, the planchet(coin blank) slightly oblong. Nonetheless unlike most coins of the era, the strike caught most of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. The coin was struck a bit off-center. The obverse a little bit low and too far right, the reverse just a little bit low and left of center. That coupled with the slightly irregular flan(coin edge) results in some of the legend on both obverse and

18thC Antique Hungarian Opal Ancient Persia Lightening Gem
Antique Nineteenth Century Genuine Hungarian White Opal Semi-Precious Gemstones from Czechoslovakia! ORIGIN: Hungarian- Czechoslovakian Mines the Original Source of Opal for the Ancient Mediterranean World. Late Eighteenth or Early Nineteenth Century. SIZE: Length: 8mm. Width: 3mm. Thickness: 3mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 0.46 carats. DETAIL: Popular throughout the ancient Mediterranean. Early Persians believed opals fell from the heavens in flashes of lightning(which accounted for their fiery play-of-color) This is a very coarse solid white opal gemstone from mines in present-day Slovakia- the"Hungarian" mines which produced European opal from(evidence suggests) the sixth millennia B.C. through the early twentieth century. It was the discovery of much better quality opal in Australia in the late nineteenth century ... morewhich proved to be the undoing of this very ancient source of Opal. This specimen is quite typical of the lower quality product which was ordinarily produced during Medieval and Renaissance eras. For those unfamiliar with white opal, in its"unexcited" state(below for example) white opals appear ever so much like a translucent piece"milk" carnival glass so popular in the era of the 1930's to 1950's. They generally appear milky with very light iridescent luminescence(just like carnival milk glass) However when a light source strikes opal(above for example) higher quality specimens(especially Australian) are transformed into an iridescent wonder, an incredible rainbow of striking colors, patterns, and luminescence. The more expensive and high grade opals are almost psychedelic in their transfixing pattern of iridescent coloration. This particular specimen does not show any significant amount of"fire" Again, it is typical of the lower-grade stones mined and produced for"the common man" nearly a century ago. However at one time in the 18th and 19th centuries, opals were considered to be one of the world's most desirable gemstones, an

Classical Deities & Heroes Ancient & Medieval Art Myths Gaea Kronos Zeus Urqanus
Myths of the World: Classical Deities and Heroes by Morgan J. Roberts. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 112 pages. Publisher: Friedman Group; 1994) Ancient Greece. Considered by many to be the birthplace of western civilization, have rise to a mythology that has inspired artists and writers of the western world for centuries. Artists such as da Vinci and Titian and storytellers from Homer to Joyce have treated mythological stories and characters in their works. This mythology did not, however, remain solely Greek for long. When the Romans conquered the Greek regions and began the creation of their empire, they usurped the Greek myths and carried them north and west across Europe to the British Isles. Myths of the World: Classical deities and Heroes” presents the gods, goddesses, and heroes of Greco-Roman mythology in a fun-to-read ... moremodern storybook for myth lovers of all ages. The book begins with an account of the creation of the universe and the genesis of the earliest divine and semi-divine creatures including Uranus(heaven) and Gaea(earth) and their children: the monstrous hundred-handed Ones. The hideous Cyclopes, and the Titans, whose leader, Kronos, would later castrate his father and replace him as king of the heavens. Next comes the story of the reign of Kronos, the birth of his six children, the first of the Olympians(those gods who would later comprise the Greek pantheon) and Kronos’ overthrow by his son Zeus, who would go on to oversee the five ages of man. The middle chapters discuss each of the Olympians in turn. Describing his or her origin, sphere of influence, and major attributes, and presenting a story or two that is representative of his or her place in Greek mythology. Read about Zeus’s infidelities and his wife Hera’s acts of revenge, Hade’s abduction OF Demeter’S daughter Persephone, the love affair between Aphrodite and Ares, the pride of Apollo and his sister Artemis, the rape of Athena by Hephaestus, the cunning trickery of Hermes, the special immortality of Dionysus, and

PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: The Etruscan ... morecivilization is the name given today to the culture and way of life of people of ancient Italy whom ancient Romans called Etrusci or Tusci. The ancient Greeks' word for them was Tyrrhenoi. Or Tyrrsenoi. The Etruscans themselves used the term Rasenna, which was syncopated to Rasna or Ra?na. As distinguished by its own language, the civilization endured from an unknown prehistoric time prior to the foundation of Rome until its complete assimilation to Italic Rome in the Roman Republic. Numerous artifacts of Etruscan culture survived the Roman conquest. At its maximum extent during the foundation period of Rome and the Roman kingdom. It flourished in three confederacies: of Etruria, of the Po valley and Latium and of Campania. Rome was sited in Etruscan territory. There is considerable evidence that early Rome was dominated by Etruscans until the Romans sacked Veii in 396 BC. Culture that is identifiably and certainly Etruscan developed in Italy after about 800 B.C. approximately over the range of the preceding Iron Age Villanovan culture. The latter gave way in the seventh century to a culture that was influenced by Greek traders and Greek neighbors in Magna Graecia. The
DVD Roman Emperor Constantine & The Cross Ancient Christianity Maxentius Milvian
Constantine and The Cross(1962) Starring: Cornel Wilde. Belinda Lee. Director: Lionello De Felice. DESCRIPTION: DVD: 120 minutes. The vast majority of this movie that centers on Constantine's personal life is pure fiction. However. That is not so bad; Gladiator" re-wrote history, too, but was nonetheless a great movie. And this movie does not fabricate history just to fabricate, but rather it does so with the objective of tying Constantine and Christianity together. One of the more notable scenes in which historical fact comes together with a fudging of Constantine's life is the arena scene. In this segment. Constantine jumps down into a pit where Christians are maliciously being slaughtered. Historically, the feeding-the-Christians-to-the-lions motif is right on. Under the emperor Galerius(ruled 305-311 A.D. shortly before Constantine ... moreascended to the throne) Christian persecution was at its height. While it is untrue that Constantine slew lions to save Christians, the arena scene nevertheless serves as an excellent depiction of incidents which really happened. The really notable quality of this movie lies in its portrayal of major historical happenings. Diocletian and Maximian really did abdicate the throne in 308. It is also true that his mother. Helena, was a Christian(although the details re: his relationship w/her in the movie are fictional) He did marry Fausta(although he had her and his eldest son Crispus put to death for treason in 326- long after the time period covered in this movie) The inclusion of Constantine's"divine vision" before his battle with Maxentius is essential; perhaps one of the defining moments in the entire history of Christianity. The actual battle itself is also given accurate treatment as Maxentius' cavalry was ambushed and trapped by Constantine's forces, just as the film claims. The original ancient source of opal gemstones, known in Roman times, was in what is now East Slovakia. Elsewhere in the ancient world, the Romans used opal both for jewelry and in the production of cameos. Ancient Greeks, amongst many other ancient cultures, thought opals gave their owner the gift of prophecy and foresight, and prevented diseases. Here is an absolutely gorgeous. Empires Ascendant TimeFrame 400 BC– AD 200. DESCRIPTION: Hardback: 175 pages. Publisher: Time-Life Books Inc; 1987) The Time Frame series was released in the late 80's-early 90's. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. ... moreThis is as close as you can be to actually having been there. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) to introduce the history of humankind. This would have to be it. The overviews are concise and well-written. Together with the illustration and pictures they impart a wonderful mental and emotional“picture” of what life must have been like in various civilizations and at various times. Done in a style so wonderfully characteristic of Time-Life’s publications, these are over-sized“coffee table” type books full of impressive imagery. The pictures of the world’s greatest art and architecture alone are worth the cost of these books. But don’t get the impression that these volumes are“fluff” While a particular volume might not quite take the place as a university degree, the material is well-written, informative, and immensely intellectually gratifying, overview though it might be. This particular volume, Time-Frame 400 BC-200 AD” is sub-titled“Empires Ascendant” The material is divided into a number of subjects which will give you an idea of the rich content; and includes: Th

Ancient Roman Celtic Thrace (Bulgaria) Bronze Jewelry Plaque Bronze Brooch AD200
Handsome Ancient Roman Bronze Jewelry Plaque AD 200. CLASSIFICATION: Roman-Celtic Bronze Brooch. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Thracia) Third Century A.D. DETAIL: A very handsome plaque containing the decorative fascia of a Roman bronze brooch. The design likely of Celtic inspiration. There remains portions of the pivot and clasp on the underside of the brooch, but the pin was broken out, as well as the hinge pivot pin as well. The piece is rather fragile and thin, so rather than add a new pin, it seemed best to mount it. The diameter of the brooch is 35 millimeters(almost 1 1/2 inches) and it weighs 3.07 grams. The style is quite characteristic of the Roman Empire’s first through third centuries. A popular style 2,000 years ago, today it is a recognizable and not uncommon find. However inasmuch as the pins used to attach the brooch to ... moreclothing tended to be very fine, they are generally not recovered intact, having decomposed/oxidized over the centuries, especially if(as often was the case) they were made of iron. You can clearly see the unmistakable evidence that the brooch spent two thousand years buried. Though the artifact is still more or less in one piece(excepting the pin) It nonetheless evidences moderately heavy porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic soil) Unfortunately ancient metal, especially bronze and iron, tends to decompose in soil over the millennia. It is not too uncommon to unearth metal artifacts which are nothing more than crumbled stains within the soil(green for bronze, red for iron) Oftentimes in such circumstances you can see what was a metal artifact, but when touched it crumbles into the soil. Fortunately this bronze brooch was not unearthed in such an advanced state of decomposition. It obviously evidences considerably porosity(the fine surface pitting caused by oxidation) which kind of enhances its character, however the artifact is still intact. Jewelry was very popular in the Roman Empire. Rings. Earrings, pendants, and bracelets, fibulae, brooches
Stoic “Meditations”Ancient Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius of “Gladiator” Commodus
Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: 048629823X. One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace ... moreand ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of this classic George Long translation. This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers today’s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. The characters of Romeo and Juliet have been depicted in literature, music, dance, and theatre. The appeal of the young hero and heroine, whose families the Montagues and Capulets are implacable enemies, is such that they have become, in the popular imagination, the representative type of star-crossed lovers. Shakespeare’s principal source for the plot was“The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet” A long narrative poem by English poet Arthur Brooke. The poem was written in 1562, a year before Brooke’s ... moredeath in 1563. Brooke had based his poem on a translation of a tale by an Italian writer, Matteo Bandello(1485-1561) Shakespeare set the scene in Verona, Italy, during the month of July. Juliet, a Capulet, and Romeo, a Montague, fall in love at a masked ball of the Capulets and profess their love when Romeo later visits her at her private balcony on her family’s home. Because the two noble families are enemies. The couple is married secretly by Friar Laurence. When Tybalt, a Capulet, kills Romeo’s friend Mercutio in a quarrel, Romeo kills Tybalt and is banished to Mantua. Juliet’s father insists on her marrying Count Paris, and Juliet goes to consult the friar. He gives her a potion that makes a person appear to be dead. He proposes that she take it, and that Romeo then rescue her. Juliet complies. Unaware of the friar’s scheme. Romeo returns to Verona on hearing of Juliet’s apparent death. He encounters Count Paris, kills him, and finds Juliet in the Capulets’ burial vault. Romeo gives Juliet a last kiss, and kills himself with poison. Juliet awakens, sees dead Romeo, and kills herself. The families learn what has happened, and end their blood feud. CONDITION: New. Ne

NEW Following Hadrian 138AD Roman Emperor UK Wall Pantheon Tivoli 900-Room Villa
Following Hadrian: A Second-Century Journey Through the Roman Empire by Elizabeth Speller. DESCRIPTION: Published at $74.00] Hardback with Dust Jacket: 328 pages. Publisher: Oxford University Press; 2003) Hadrian. The great, but flawed, Roman Emperor, was an inveterate traveler, intellectual, and patron of the arts. He was determined to make his mark on posterity and left an unparalleled legacy of beautiful new cities and buildings throughout his vast empire and, of course, in Rome. Much of his inspiring architecture remains for today's travelers to marvel at, although some has disappeared without trace and is now the stuff of legend. But Hadrian was also melancholy, volatile, and utterly ruthless. He treated his wife with contempt and devoted himself to a beautiful boy whose sinister death, while they traveled in Egypt, plunged Hadrian ... moreinto despair; it changed his personality for ever and affected his ability to rule. Within two years. The man who had been one of the most peace-loving of emperors plunged his empire into a terrible, ill-judged, three-year war against Judea. Classicist Elizabeth Speller tells the story of the most powerful man on earth in the early second century against a background of his travels and intrigues. This was a man who had commissioned a dazzling construction program, from Hadrian's Wall in Britain and the extraordinary Pantheon in Rome, to his 900-room villa at Tivoli, works which represented the central themes of his rule: military domination, religious tolerance, and an extravagant lifestyle. Soundly based on original sources and archaeology, this compelling book throws new light on Hadrian and the Roman Empire of the second century. CONDITION: Light shelf-wear consistent with open shelf stock. Otherwise in New, never read condition. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. 1955 Modern Library Decameron 14thC Medieval Florence Italy Black Death Plague
The Decameron of Giovanni Boccaccio Translated by Frances Winwar- Complete and Unabridged. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 666 pages. Publisher: The Modern Library; 1955) The Decameron' is a fascinating example of classic literature that remains fresh and entertaining today. Written in the mid-14th century. It concerns the first major outbreak of the black plague in Europe, which emerged in Italy in approximately 1347. Boccaccio begins, in the prologue, by stating his purpose for writing the book- namely, to entertain literate women with nothing else to do with their time. The story itself concerns ten young Florentines(seven women- Pampinea, Filomena, Neifile, Fiammetta, Elissa, Lauretta, and Emilia; and three men- Panfilo, Dioneo, and Filostrato) who flee the city in hopes of escaping the plague. To occupy themselves during ... morethis time, they tell each other stories, with each person telling one story per day to make a total of 100 stories over the course of the entire book. At the beginning of the first day, Boccaccio provides an excellent and detailed description of the plague itself. The book ends with the refugees returning to their homes, and a closing epilogue from the author. CONDITION: Shelf wear and soiling to Dust Jacket. Yellowing pages and in good condition. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: The Decameron is an entertaining series of one hundred stories written in the wake of the Black Death. Recounted by young citizens of Florence who have fled the city in order to escape the plague. These young unmarried nobles, the"beautiful people" of the age, decide to wait out the Florentine plague in their country estates, amusing each other every evening with earthy stories, some outright bawdy, others pointing to a moral. This Italian book, written in 1351, inspired Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Balzac, and remains one of the most enjoyable an

DETAIL: Healing stone of the ancient ... moreEgyptians and Greeks. Roman Legionary Soldiers carried tiger’s eye believing that it gave them an advantage over their opponents in combat. According to ancient Near Eastern legends, tiger's eye enabled the wearer to be"all seeing" even to the point of being able to see through walls so one could observe what was happening in another room. It was not only worn to enable"clear vision" and good fortune, but also to drive off phantoms and shades of the dead. The Assyrians(neighbors to the Babylonians) carved the tiger's eye into cylinders which were covered with depictions of mythic creatures and names of gods, and the cylinders were then worn about the neck as charms for protection. In nearby ancient Egypt, many Egyptian statues of their various gods were fashioned complete with eyes made from tiger's eye. The earring settings are of contemporary origin. They are high quality settings manufactured by one of the USA’s leading semi-custom mount producers. They are constructed of sterling silver; they are not cheap, silver electroplated earrings. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Though Ametrine was known in the ancient world(the ancient source for ametrine was likely India via camel caravan through Persia) It first became famous in the modern world in the seventeenth century when a Spanish conquistador received it as a dowry when he married a South American Indian princess. Ametrine was subsequently introduced to Europe through the conquistador's gifts to the Spanish queen. You can think ... moreof Ametrine as a gemstone quality quartz crystal which when growing up could not decide whether it wanted to be an Amethyst or a Citrine, and so developed a“split personality” This is a very large, very clean, handcrafted faceted pear cut ametrine from the Anahi Mine in Bolivia. Imported for use in indigenous jewelry, the gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. Ametrine is actually very rare in nature, having both the manganese traces which produce amethyst’s purple, as well as the iron traces which produce citrine’s yellow. The crystals must then be exposed to a variable source of heat, such as might be the case when a crystal partly encased in rock is exposed on one surface to sun shine. Slowly a portion of the gemstone will change color from amethyst’s purple to citrine’s yellow. This occurs rather rarely in nature. It seems that the ancient Mediterranean world knew of ametrine. The ancient source for ametrine was likely India via camel caravan through Persia. With the ancient source of ametrine lost and f

Daily Life in 13thC English Medieval Village 257pgs Pix
Life in a Medieval Village by Frances and Joseph Gies. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 257 pages. Publisher: Harper and Row. Publishers; 1990) In this latest addition to their series on life in the Middle Ages. Frances and Joseph Gies have combined the recent discoveries of archeology with information from contemporary documents to create a lively and convincing portrait of rural people at work and at play seven hundred years ago. Focusing on the village of Elton, in the English East Midlands, the authors show medieval peasants not only as tenants and elements in the manorial system, but as members of a village community, who plant their own fields and those of their lord, administer village affairs, sue and are sued in the manorial court, and relate to one another in ways that surprisingly transcend their status as“free” or“villain” The authors ... moredescribe the peasant’s food, housing, and family life; the threatening tensions between them and the lord of the manor, and the place of the church in their lives. Though the main focus is on Elton circa 1300 A.D. the Gieses supply enlightening historical context in an account of the origin, development, and decline of the European village, itself an invention of the Middle Ages. Here are two large, very clean, golden yellow citrines which originated in the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus ... moreCountry, Scotland. These are exquisite gemstones which are completely transparent, exceptionally clean, water clear, with beautiful sparkle and luster. These particular gemstones were hand cut and faceted into these somewhat coarse briolettes, an old fashioned cut reflecting their heritage, by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. These are very beautiful and brightly hued citrine semi-precious gemstones which though as you can clearly see in these photo enlargements might not be absolutely flawless. They are eye clean. Under magnification the gemstones show the unmistakable characteristics of having been hand crafted. However the coarseness of the nineteenth century finish is considered appealing to most gemstone collectors, and is not considered a detriment, or detract from the value of a gemstone. These characteristics are not only expected of hand-finished gemstones, most serious collectors consider such gemstones more desirable, possessed of greater character and uniqueness when compared to today's cookie-cutter mass-produced ma

DETAIL: A gorgeous and richly colored sky blue colored star sapphire precious gemstone from Mogok. This particular specimen is a beautiful sky blue with violet undertones– very reminiscent ... moreof a late summer’s afternoon sky. Just as twilight approaches. It is quite striking, very handsome and rich in tone, the color intense yet still delicate, the star quite beautiful. The gemstone was hand shaped and polished into this very beautiful oval cabochon by a 19th century Russian artisan for use in domestic jewelry. The result is an exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstone with lots of depth and gorgeous tone. It is not an absolutely flawless gemstone. Of course it is the alignment of included material which creates the star– so star sapphires always have included material. The question is, how noticeable? With this particular specimen, to the eye, there are no significant blemishes. However with photo enlargement– or examination with a jeweler’s loupe, one can detect very slight color zoning. This means you might notice a slight variations in the tone, as well as a few internal blemishes. However to the eye it is quite beautiful and without flaw. It is only when you examine it under magnification you might be able to pick out some very minor color zoning and a minute blemish or two. Of course, the same can be said of most sapphires in general, and p

HCDJ Ancient Glass Phoenicia Syria Egypt Rome Medieval
Glass from Antiquity to the Renaissance: 72 Plates in Full Colour by Giovanni Mariacher. DESCRIPTION: Hardback: 157 pages. Publisher: Cameo/ Hamlyn; 1970) ISBN: 0600338083. The origins of glass are shrouded in mystery. But according to tradition, it was accidentally discovered by a group of shipwrecked Phoenician sailors when lighting a fire on a sandy beach. Certainly the Phoenicians traded in primitive glass ornaments as did the ancient Egyptians. When glass blowing was developed, many centers of glass manufacture sprang up and flourished around the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly in Syria and Alexandria. Meanwhile in Western Europe the art of glass making was established and spread under the benevolent eye of the Romans. Giovanni Mariacher traces the influence of these two traditions illustrating his text with marvelous examples of ... moreByzantine. Islamic, and Medieval glass. Then in the last part of the book he describes Venetian glass of the Renaissance; exquisite, unmistakable, unsurpassed. CONDITION: Clean but EX-LIBRARY hardcover w/dustjacket encased in mylar cover. RARE!! Dini E Cellai Signa Copper or Bronze Oil Lamp or Incense Holder
RARE! Dini E Cellai Signa Copper or Bronze Oil Lamp or Incense Holder You are bidding on this RARE item made by Dini E Cellai Signa. I am not sure exactly what it is. But my best guess is that it is an oil lamp or an incense holder. It has a reservoir in which you pour oil into the'mouth' of the figure and perhaps have wicks coming out of the three small holes near the handle. Or perhaps incense sticks are placed in the small holes. It appears to be solid copper or bronze. It has a lovely patina so it is old. There is a makers mark on the bottom and also a item NO. 341. The dimensions are 3.5" x 2" x 2.5" Please contact me with questions. Please see photos for more details. Thanks for shopping with me and good luck bidding!
