The cross is marked sterling on the back as well as something?hs. The beads feel like a plastic of some sort. The metal of the necklace part doesn't look silver. This beautiful vintage rosary is made using 8& 10 mm charcoal grey wood oval beads. Silver findings and chain, silver center medal, and wood inlaid silver crucifix. The necklace is 28 in. from one connection of centerpiece to the other. The crucifix hangs 6-1/4 in. from center medal which is 5/8 in. long. The center medal looks tarnished and may be silver plated. The crucifix is marked France and appears to be ebony wood and silver plated brass. This exquisite rosary is made from vintage materials. I put the vintage 5mm black beads together using vintage silver plated chain. Some silver plated eye pins are new. Though. The necklace is 20.5 in. from one connection of centerpiece to the other. The vintage ebony wood inlaid silver crucifix is marked France and hangs 4-1/2 in. from center medal which is 3/4 in. long. This is truly a beautiful piece combining small black beads and bright shiny silver metal. You will be very pleased with this rosary. Would make a great gift. Please look at my other listings. This unique piece was found among other antique religious items cherished for many decades in the Buffalo. NY region. Antique 1800's Sterling Silver & Ebony Wood Rosary
Listing: This listing is for a great antique french rosary. It has solid sterling chain holding it together and sterling caps on the larger beads. The centerpiece shows the true age of the rosary and probably dates to the 1800's. The cross is not original. I repeat, the cross is not original I added a cross in a similar style to the center piece but it is only an approximation. I received the rosary without a cross. You may change the cross to something more appropriate if you wish. Condition: Overall the original pieces are in great condition. The ebony wood seems a little dry but this could be from age. Measurements: Total length not including the cross I added is 32" to the centerpiece and 6" after the centerpiece before the cross. Payment for Items is due within 5 days of auction end. I photographed this wonderful devotional in both artificial and natural light. To give you a better idea of how rich the bead color is. They are fairly lightweight material with natural inclusions. And appear to be hand carved rather than molded, with slightly varying sizes and shapes. For that reason I've concluded the following: ● The black ave beads are horn(from domestic livestock) Natural in color(the color goes all the way through) They're not heavy enough to be stone or gutta percha, and too early to be Bakelite. ● The blue pater beads are either real gemstone material such as lapis or sodalite. Or horn dyed to mimic them. One has a chip at the hole where it appears the blue color isn't just an applied surface coating. But when I say"lightweight. don't let that fool you. This is a very high-quality devotional, well made by expert artisans and well cared for over the decades. About all the metal: The crucifix. Connector, and sturdy chain have no hallmarks and I haven't tested them, but they may be silver(probably low grade) There's no corrosion or plate wear, so they're solid metal, and not steel or plated. Silver Rosary Beads & Crucifix Sacred Heart Of Jesus Vintage Antique?
This Rosary looks quite old but I am not an expert. The features on the medal and crucifix figures are worn with use. The image of the Sacred Heart measures approximately 1/2" The image on the back is hard to see but may be the Infant of Prague as the Baby Jesus has a crown. There is a marking on this side. Perhaps to show the silver but it is not readable. This rosary including the crucifix measures approximately 16 3/4 inches. The crucifix is 2 inches long by 1 1/4 inches wide and is beautifully detailed. See pictures. The back of the crucifix is not marked. There and the usual 10 beads per decade but there are also tiny beads in between. I am selling some of my mother's things. It is time to let people enjoy them.
