This is the mark of Albert Whittemore, ... morewho operated a stoneware manufactory in Havana Village, just west of Ithaca 1863-1893; the area is now known as Montour Falls. Whittemore Beehives are quite scarce, and this one is very impressive. The brushed Cobalt Floral Is flanked by a pair of freehand"3's" The capacity is also impressed on the shoulder, just above the cobalt decoration. This is an early Whittemore Jug that dates to around 1870. The overall condition is excellent. There are some tight hairlines near the lower right side(see close-up) one travels about 3/4 into the base. There are also some typical imperfections created during manufacture(stack marks, glaze skips and drips, etc) The applied strap handle and spout are nearly flawless- there is one tiny nick on the inside rim. Please see photo set for complete details and further description. This is a fine, early example from Upstate NY that displays exceptionally in any Country or Primitive setting. Joseph Pech along with his sons W. J. and Frank established the Buckeye Pottery in Macomb in 1882. Pech. Born in Bohemia on June 15, 1827, apprenticed for 12 years as a potter in Vienna, Austria. Buckeye Pottery was located on Carroll Street. Near the railroad. At the peak of its production. The company employed 20 individuals. The clay came primarily from Macomb County. Wares were marketed to Illinois. Nebraska, Iowa, and other western states. In 1939. Haeger Company purchased Buckeye Pottery and used the pottery to manufacture Haeger floral artware. From the makers mark we are fairly certain this piece dates to about 1901-1919. Around 1920-1930 Port Dundas Pottery begain marking their stoneware with just the words"Made in Scotland" pic 12) Although Port Dundas was in business since 1828, it wasn't until 1878 when they were the first to introduce transfer printing, onto stoneware and advertised they could stamp bottles in color(In this case black) This would have been with a hand held rubber stamp, taken from an etched copper plate. Antique Cobalt Blue Decorated Stoneware Jug; Old Salt Glaze 19th Century Pottery
Up for bids we offer a beautiful. 19th Century, 2 gallon, stoneware jug in exceptional condition. Right out of an estate, this salt glazed piece has a folksy, cobalt blue floral decoration on the front as well as an underscored number"2" above it. It was found in the western New York region and isn't signed by the pottery that produced it but there's a good chance it is a Lyons- Fisher or Burger jug. It has a gorgeous, dark, and earthy coloring along with that speckled, salt glazed surface. This piece is very well preserved and has only one small pitted type flaw near the handle. There are no other chips, not even around the spout or the bottom edge. The handle hasn't been broken and there aren't any cracks or hairlines anywhere on the piece. As a little bonus, we'll include the very nice, hand-carved wooden ... morestopper it was found with. The jug measures about 13 1/2 inches high with a bottom diameter of 8 1/4 inches while the very top measures 2 1/4 inches across. As far as condition goes, this is the nicest piece of decorated stoneware we have ever found. It would make a super addition to any collection and also a top notch example to start one off! Antique Stoneware Salt Glazed Miniature American Pottery Jug Applied Handle
Up for auction is an antique stoneware saltglazed jug recently found at auction in northern Indiana. It is found in good used condition. It has a small applied handle in the back large enough for one finger. It measures approx. 6 1/2" with a base diameter of approx. 4 1/2" in size. The opening is approx 1" The only condition issue to report is a small hairline crack in the back which does not go through to the interior. See photo 7. There are also some stain marks which should clean up without much effort. It is not signed and appears more southern than northern American pottery. A nice addition to one's collection. Bottom Marked Stoneware Cone Top One Gallon Jug by Buckeye Pottery
For your consideration is a vintage stoneware jug made by the BUCKEYE POTTERY of MACOMB ILLINOIS. This jug is a one gallon size and is the cone top style. I do not know much about this company. What I do know is this company was formed in 1882 and was sold in 1941; I beleive this jug to have been manufactured during the first decade of the twentieth century. In 1882, the technology to use this type of glaze had not been invented. The companies that I have studied got the technology to use this type of glaze between 1894 and 1901. From the table to the shoulder is approximately 7" This jug has a total height of approximately 10 3/4" The bottom is slightly over 7" in diameter. This jug has a crack on the cone, not far from the handle. It has a chip on the shoulder and another chip on the lip. There are three minor to insignificant ... morechips where the sides meet the bottom. This jug displays wonderfully, but is not perfect; before purchasing, please carefully look at the photos. This turn of the century jug is quite hefty with black or deep navy blue graphics over a cream/ off-white background with an applied handle highlighted in tan along with the neck. There are no cracks or chips. This item is in good- very good"as found" condition considering the age and use with minimal if any crazing. It appears at one time someone may have used this jug as a candle holder as there is a bit of residual wax to the inner neck area. antique handmade stoneware jug crock 1800's cobalt design salt glaze pottery 6gl
this is a rare antique handmade stoneware pottery crock from mid to late 1800's it is completely made by hand out of thick. Heavy stoneware with extremely thick walls. it has and exquisite salt glaze finish. With beautifully painted cobalt stylized figural detailing. it has a dual handle and a large mouth. It is near museum quality, not one chip on the whole crock, which is EXTREMELY RARE any imperfections on the crock were done in the creation process. Like any discoloration. crocks of this age and quality hardly ever come to market. it measures 12 1/2 inches in diameter x 13 inches tall and has a wonderful patina from age. i believe it is a 5 to 6 gallon crock.very heavy piece. there are a couple very very tiny hairline cracks as shown in the last pic. Antique Macomb.Ill Pottery Co Company Jug Stoneware Vintage Salt Glaze Rare Find
This listing is for: a salt glaze jug manufactured by the Macomb Pottery Company of Macomb. Ill. They were in business from 1882-1941 so this is a very old piece. This jug is in fair condition. It's quite worn and shows it's age. There are many scrat ches. Chips and some areas where the glaze has come off and is missing(created small holes in the top glaze) The bottom has quite a lot of scratches and chipping. The name is very difficult to read but visible in the right li ghting. There is a crack going up the side of the ju g but doesn't affect it's structure. This piece measures 8.5 inches tall and 7 inches in diam eter at the base. This is a very unusual and attractive piece of stoneware. The only one on Ebay of it's kind. comes from a smoke Free Home. There appears to be no after-manufacture damage, but there is a large drip in the glaze and a scratch which appears on inspection to be underneath the glaze, since one cannot feel it. Is this genuine antique 19thc Stoneware Jug covered with a deep dark layer of Albany Brown Slip Glaze and fitted with a Pour Lip Spout for your liquid refreshment, did anyone say Moonshine? This is an American pottery piece manufactured in the post 1850 time frame for utilitarian use but now elevated into a country collectible with much charm from yesteryear just for you! Stoneware Jug stands 10" tall and measures 7 7/8" across the base diameter formed in a slight gumdrop shape with well formed loop strap handle flowing right into a pointed pour lip spout neck fitted with an old cork that moves in and out freely at will. Slight dishing of neck to catch drips(lest you shall waste any good liquid refreshment to spillage! Scale weight is a rock solid heavy ... morefive pounds! Slight lighter brown kiss mark haze near bottom due to uneven firing in the making. Please study pictures taken outdoors in natural sunlight to view all colors and characteristics of this sturdy piece of pottery. Very thick chocolate brown overglaze with no flaking or fry anywhere coats the exterior with a plain bottom. Unsigned, and no capacity mark, but I would call this a goodly one gallon size. I really don't know anything about this beautiful piece of pottery. It measures about 9 inches tall and 16 inches around at the widest point. It appears to be quite old and has Poland stamped on the bottom. There no cracks or chips just a few imperfections in the piece. Antique Brown Jug Barn Find Stoneware Pottery Brown Jug mid 1900's 1 Gallon Moon
Up for bid is an Antique Stoneware Pottery Little Brown jug holds about 1 gallon. Has an"applied" handle to slip your thumb through. Jug is in good condition. Common markings left from the firing process. Has a dark brown glaze similar to"salt glaze" around entire jug except on the bottom. This item is not marked, I do not know if it was homemade or mass produced. Workmanship is very nice, does have"fleck or pit" spots under the glaze which makes it more interesting. The hired farm hand left near the old barn rafters several years ago. S ize about 9 1/2" tall and about 7 1/4" wide at the bottom. PRICED TO SELL!
