Item: 1730 Church Communion Box w/ initials"I.H.S. Purchase Date: 1988. Box size: 13” h x 4 5/8”w x 13” depth/length) About the work: This description is revised. I took the item to PBS's Antiques Roadshow at the Javits Center in NYC on August 9. 2014(didn't get videotaped but I had a great time! This is the revised part of this listing's description: The Folk Art consultants think is a hand carved communion box. They think it most likely is from England as it is made out of beech. And beech wood was prevalent or indicative of English works. They said when they don't know for sure if it is from England or America they call it"Brittania" I learned something new! They think the"1730" date carved on the box represents the date of the Church's origin or birth. They think the box was created in or a ... morelittle later than 1730. The I.H.S. monogram is Greek for"Jesus. There is a curved piece of iron on the front of the box in the design below the keyhole that they noticed. It is in the shape of a script or cursive"P. They think it has some sort of significance but they didn't know what it could be. The thought it might be some type of religious significance. Both consultants concluded that"it was there for a reason. I have added a picture of the iron"P" as well as pictures of my ticket and the Antiques Roadshow brochure so you know I am not fibbing. I do not know eBay or Antiques Roadshow protocol so if you are interested in the names of the two consultants. Email me and I'll let you know. I immediately recognized one from the show. The following is from my original description: The box is tapered. The face is patterned and has a keyhole like opening near the top. The left side has the initials“I.H.S. carved into it as well as decorative wheel designs and crosses. The right side has the year“1730” carved into it as well as additional decorative designs. The bottom is carved in a grid pattern. The sides of the bottom have an“X” pattern carved on th

The wood is either black walnut or a tropical hardwood of the mahogany type. Nice brass escutcheon and handle. It is an original period box. But someone has had a go at restoring this and has stripped off the original finish back to bare wood- the base has been replaced and an interior tray made and fitted( originally it had three compartments and a spoon tray- there are internal slots to take the dividers for these. It now needs a bit more work to make it something really nice again- one of the back feet needs replacing and the wood needs finishing. Early 19c mahogany & rosewood fitted sewing box,
This is a lovely early 19th century mahogany and rosewood crossbanded fitted sewing box with original mirror. A Rare 17th Century Carved Oak Childs Coffer Of Boarded Construction 2ft Wide
A Child's Carved Oak Board Chest Circa 1620 A tactile chest this one at only 2ft wide. Of six plank construction the front carved with twin lunettes of crude design and the initials I E flanking a central lockplate also stamped with the initials RA to the facing lefthand side and also under the lockplate.I feel the lockplate is original to the chest and it was stamped when the lockplate was moved to a horizontal position from originaly being placed at an angle(evidence of old nail in situ) The sides which have signs of sap dammage to alternate corners are of riven timber and this is nice to see as it gives one confidence that this chest was made this size and not a later adaptation as the two boards are from the same piece of wood that was split all those years ago. The lid originally had three ring hinges that have gone over time and ... morewere replaced in the late 18th century looking at there design. The lid has been moved 1.5" to the right and the end cut this all matches the holes of the original ring hinges and hasp with the carcass of the chest. It has had a hard life but hey its an original child's chest circa 1620 with a lovely deep colour and patina. 24" Wide 14.5" High 13" Deep In my opinion its a sweet little gem that will inhance any collection. Please get in touch for further images or information that may be required. 17th Century Carved Oak Desk Box Initials E A Bible box
17th Century Carved Oak Desk Box. A good country example. The front carved in a formal manor with the initials EA under the lockplate and the sides in a light foliate design which is such a contrast to the front but works. The interior with two compartments. The draws unfortunately long gone. I am sure that by now you will know i have an addiction to boxes and this one i thought was so unusual to the norm. Good colour original lockplate and hinges a small replacement to the front of the base board and later book rest to the lid. 24.5" Wide 18.5" Deep 5" High To Front 12" High To Back Please get in touch for further information and please look at my site antiquehadden for more oak items from gothic to country.

Large 18th c antique dowry marriage blanket chest ornately carved dated 1733
A large 18th century marriage chest. Ornately carved and dated"1733" with pegged construction. The measurements are approximately 27" tall, just shy of 58" wide at the widest point(which is the bottom) and 28" deep at the deepest point(which is the bottom) Though the European influence is apparent, we really do not know the region of origin or the maker of this piece. There is a decorative carved block of wood which has been lost(front upper left corner as you face the piece) The inner till box inside the chest has also been lost. The piece of wood composing the top of the chest has split, as have the hinges(please see photos) The locking hardware and mechanism has also been removed. The pegs holding the lid together are a bit loose, so the lid should be lifted with care. This is an antique piece of furniture which ... moreis almost 300 years old, so there are dings, scratches, and other imperfections which are visible upon close inspection. 18th century antique trunk deer hide cow animal hide dome traveling chest EB
Late 18th century deer or cow hide covered some top wooden trunk or chest. Adorned with breads studs and donning the initials E.B. Just amazing piece of history. Could be fixed up or appreciated for what it is! Unusual to see paper lined inside so well intact especially with original tag on the inside describing some maker of some elements of the trunk- Sam L. Ash who I had read about once being well renowned engraver of the last quarter of the 18th century. This trunk does have condition issues. Please review photos carefully and ask any and all questions prior to any bidding. Notes: hide is detaching and or missing in numerous areas, hair missing from sections, signs of water damage in small areas, peeling paper inside, general wear and tear.

1741 18th Century Heavy Carved European Dowry Chest Coffer All Original with Key
This listing is for a truly awesome. All original 18th century European dowry chest or coffer. The face of the coffer has four floral panels. At the bottom of the panels, Anno 1741" is spelled out, giving the date of creation as 1741. The border above the panels is carved with the name Trincke Gerdes. This was most likely a marriage chest, though it could have also been made as a blanket chest at her birth or later as a gift for some other rite of passage. Regardless of its purpose, this chest is an exceptional example. The chest is held together with wooden pegs and nails with mortised details at the back. It has its original heavy cast iron carrying handles on each side. Best of all, it has its original key and locking mechanism, and they still work together. The original till box is also still attached to the inside of the chest with ... morehand wrought iron nails. The till box has a false bottom, but you can access the lower compartment by sliding the mortised side of the box up. As you might expect, the chest has age and use-related wear. The top has a beautiful patina but is nevertheless covered in small scratches and dings as shown. One side of the chest has a horizontal crack where the iron handle put pressure on the wood while being carried, and the other side has a small crack in the moulding under the panel. There is a horizontal crack 1/3 of the way across the first floral panel, diagonal cracks around the wood pegs between the first and second and third and fourth panels, a crack in the moulding under the third floral panel, and a horizontal crack all the way across the tulip design on the fourth panel. The lock is a little tricky, but nevertheless works and cannot be opened without the key. These defects are very common for pieces of this age and style of construction, and as you can see they do nothing to detract from the beauty or functionality of the piece. The 12 picture limit was obviously not enough; I have many more pictures of this chest and would also be happy to take specific pictures by req
Antique 1790's Carved Figural Trunk Coffer Mule Chest Dovetails Hammered Nails
Original lidded coffer wood trunk. Circa 1790's. The origin is probably English. The trunk measures about 26 1/4" wide(side to side) x 13 1/2" deep x 15 1/2" tall, the box is 13" tall without the foot skirt. Highly ornate hand carvings with figural bust- very detailed. The single board lid's side pieces are attached by ten large hand hammered nails with two additional nails holding the lock hasp. The exposed nail heads are 11/16" wide. The metal lock hasp is hand hammered with rivets. The metal lock plate is hand hammered. The side pieces are attached by large dovetails. The footed skirt appears to be original to the trunk, but I am not positive. There is a modern repair to the bottom leg in one place. Please note the large and unusual nail head that attaches the bottom skirt to the trunk box. The chest is ... morein very good antique condition with numerous signs of wear and age. There are old, not active insect holes in the wood, the single board top lid has an age crack and as mentioned there is a repair to the bottom side skirt. Sold as is. FREE SHIPPING TO LOWER 48 STATES

Antique Painted Arched Top Wood Trunk Forged Nails Hardware Antique Road Show.
A real antique treasure. Paper lining lid 1826(has ad for the sale of a slave) A sad part of our country's heritage. It also has a loose newspaper from 1924. The trunk is much older than the paper. I think it is from the 1700's or before. I can't remember anymore although it is very very early. It came out of the Pennsylvania area. We took this trunk to antiques road show in Milwaukee several years ago and one of the twins said its value was $500.00. We had to wait in line for 7 hours. We won't be doing that again. I purchased it in the 70's and paid $500.00. We were celebrating our 200 year as a country. At Christmas I used it with antique toys and Christmas decorations. It was a fun piece to own. The measurements are 24"x 12"x 11" It is in good condition for its age. It would be interesting to know what ... moreit went through. The pads on bottom are self stick put on so as not to scratch hardwood floors. We will adjust shipping charges on multiple purchases if you bring it to our attention. Antique Heavily Carved Gothic Trunk - Chest From A Catholic Church
Please note while local pickup is preferred I am willing to deliver to any local shipping company free of charge. Its just to big for me to pack and ship myself. Beautiful large heavily carved gothic trunk. Purchased several years ago from a local antique store who stated it came from England from a Catholic church. We had it appraised at Palmer Wirfs. The appraiser said it was very plausible it did come from a church and believed it held religious icons. It was appraised for 4500.00 to 5500.00 It has a seam down the very middle of the chest and a handful of small knicks but I would say is in good condition for its age. It measures 56 long by 20 deep and 25 tall. Please ask questions if you have them.

Antique Geo.III Mahogany Wine Cellerette/Cooler/Box/(stores 20 bottles) Lock&key
A handy piece of furniture. Apart from securely storing your wine it can be used as a table or is strong enough to be used as a stool. Professionally restored to showroom condition. Originally it would have had a removable lead lined inner box to take both the wine and ice. It could become a wine cooler again as the divisions can be easily removed and a zinc inner box could be made to slot in. As I stick to woodworking.I'll leave that to you. I have relined it and fitted divisions also fitted bracket feet with castors to replace the missing pad feet. The front has its original sawn cut Mahogany veneers and mouldings and the top is in Spanish Mahogany. The sides and back have been veneered later in Brazilian Mahogany and the lock is Edwardian so a later addition but works and has a key. There are gilded brass lifting handles on either ... moreside. The size is 22" high 19"deep 22 1/2" wide. If you are abroad please ask and I will get you a delivery price.
Antique Deer / Pony Skin Domed Top Studded Travel Trunk Chest c. 1800
A stunning antique domed top travel trunk dating from circa 1800. This was made to be used as a travel trunk and would have sat on the back of a coach and horses. Of wooden construction. Covered with deerskin or possibly pony skin with leather studded detail and iron strapping over all edges. Much of the hair is gone from the skin but what remains is a reddish brown colour. The skin is present throughout. In areas on the sides and back it is rather rippled I think there would have been initials in studs on the top either side of the studded diamond shape. The old holes are just visible and I think say MJ. Parts of the iron strap work are heavily deteriorated. Particularly on the top surface which would have been exposed to the elements. There are small areas of the leather strapping which are missing too. The two iron carry handles appear ... moreoriginal. There is a lock plate to the front with a second plate below it. The lock is present but there is no hasp or key. Internally the timber seems sound. There is damage and wear around the hinges. But support is given by the leather straps inside which take pressure off the hinges. The base has two timber feet which run the full width front and back. There is wear to the corners of the front one and some old worm damage. This has been treated for precaution and is not active. Measures: 67cm x 42cm x 43cm high This is a great period piece full of character. Which has obviously had a long history of use. I have tried to describe all it's wear which is all consistant with great age. Please feel free to ask any questions or request any specific photos. Shipping will be by tracked courier and the chest will be very well packed for transit. Please note the shipping price quoted is for mainland UK only- elsewhere please ask for a quote. Collection is of course welcome. Payment within one week of auction end please.

The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called"flame mahogany. The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree. Antique Late 18th Century Fancy Cow Hide Chest Carriage Trunk w Brass Monogram
Up for your consideration is this late 18th century/early 19th century cow hide covered trunk or chest. This early chest still has its original hand forged iron hardware. The outside hide has mostly shed away its original fur leaving a very nice patina and grain like texure. We do see some fur still left under the original brass tacks lining this chest and spelling C. W. C. on the top of the lid. The original ornate leather trim is still in tact. We do notice this truck still has is original interior paper lining. One leather hinge has worn away on the left side(see photos) It looks as though someone added a chain to the interior sometime in it's existence. The underside of this trunk is solid with damage. Cracking or rot. This is a great example of a fancy carriage trunk. This trunk measures approximately 24 inches wide by 12 inches ... moredeep. Please message us with any questions. Thank you! Early PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH POLYCHROME DECORATED STRONG BOX BLANKET CHEST DOWERY
Early PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH POLYCHROME DECORATED STRONG BOX bLANKET cHEST dOWERY CAST IRON 18TH CENTURY This is a beautiful antique hand painted PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH POLYCHROME DECORATED bLANKET cHEST. It is decorated on 4 sides with flowers AND OTHER DECORATIVE DESIGNS. The flower painting is very nice and in good shape on the sides but shows some wear on the top. The trunk measures roughly 46.5 inches wide by 21.5 inches deep by 25.5 inches high. It shows a good deal of both age and exceptional quality in the construction. Much of this has double board construction and iron mounts. I am not certain it’s age but would estimate late 18th to early 19th century. It is possible that it is older since the joints and hardware are similar to chests claiming to be early to mid 1700s. The hardware and lock are iron and the locking mechanism is very primitive ... morein design. I do have a key but for some reason it is not working(which may mean that is not the original key. But none-the-less it does seem to turn the tumblers) The hand forged iron locks, hinges, straps, and bolts are very good quality(even though they have been made with very primitive tools) It is unique because of the iron straps, corners, and bolts used to make this box much more secure than the average dowry chest. This box is even more unique because it has interior locking compartments. In the large compartment it has locking bars much like a strong box. So I am not sure if this is a traditional dowry/blanket chest or some sort of a strong box. It is extremely heavy at least 100 lbs.

Ebay just jacket up fees dramatically too so they know this is working. We are obligated to say this about the drawer panels which were the best restorations by the qualified people as insignificant as it is. The chest is 19" long, 11" wide and 25" tall. Antique early burled mahogany cellarette wine cooler liquor box insert 19th c
A lovely antique mahogany cellarette measuring approximately 11" tall. 17.75" wide, and 15.75" deep(dollar bill is shown in image for size comparison only) There are no marks or signature, so we do not know the maker but we believe it dates to the late 18th or early 19th century. There is wear and tear commensurate with age and use. There has been some shrinking and warping of the wood, so the sides do not meet with each other completely flush at the corners. Some shrinking to the wood allover and a little bit of veneer loss, particularly on the top of the lid. Shrinking and loss to the wood on the bottom edge, particularly on the bottom on the sides and back(please see photos) The interior contains paper lined compartments and an insert lined with green felt, presumably for cordial/shot glasses. The paper lining is old and ... moreworn and may or may not be original- the green felt an obvious replacement. We do not have the key. Though there are holes in the bottom for legs, we believe the legs were added later and that this cellarete would not have had legs originally, but was meant to be set on a sideboard. There are no liquor bottles or glasses. Please view the images as an extension of the description. As they are part of the description and they are of the actual item you will receive. The particular exotic woods and various grains used in the craft of this caddy are phenomenal. They are so vivid. It really is lovely. It has been very carefully cleaned and polished and has a great patina to it. The inside of the caddy looks great and is in very good condition. The inside lid looks to be satinwood or yellowheart wood ... morewith a beautiful grain kingwood inlay boarder. The mixing bowl housing and canister lids are inlayed with poplar/green oak and other woods. Very intricate. The glass is in phenomenal condition given its age and fragile nature. It does have a crack down it as you can see from the last picture but the glass is strong and stable. The canister lids sit flush and have a lovely soft. Gliding motion to them. The side lion head brass handles are in great condition and strong as are the hinges. The caddy rest on bun feet. In stunning condition certainly for its age and highly crafted. Intricate nature. 18th century Antique Blanket Chest - COLONIAL - Immigrant Dome Trunk untouched
You are bidding on a 18th century"immigrant trunk. It is in great. Original condition. The trunk dates to the 18th century. I have had two of Rhode Island's highly respected colonial antique dealers examine the chest, and both have confirmed my approximation of age. In fact, one antique furniture expert(with a Ph.D. in history) just today, after examining the trunk for 30 minutes, said it is possible that the trunk dates to the early 1700's, making it a full 300 years old. But I will err on the side of understatement, and simply say the trunk is unquestionably 18th century. The expert was very impressed with the shape and character of the hand-forged hinges. And in particular, was effusive in his excitement with regard to the quality of the hand-forged locking mechanism. It still closes with"vise-like" strength. And ... morewe both marveled at the key.which appears to be original to the locking mechanism. Can you imagine that?nearly 300 years old, and still with the probable original key. I can't go a year without losing a key. With regard to the paint: neither the two colonial America antique dealers. Nor myself, can say with absolute 100% certainty that the paint is original to the piece. Though, after examining the trunk very closely.front, back, sides, top and bottom.we could find not a thing that points to anything other than original paint. It is simply extraordinary to find a piece of this age with such deep, rich color. So I am going to err on the side of understatement, and simply say very old paint. Possibly original. With regard to the trunk's origin: Years ago. When I purchased the trunk at auction, the auctioneer had described the trunk"as found in Pennsylvania. This makes sense to me, as the trunk certainly has the look of northern European origin.probably Dutch, German, or Scandinavian. The trunk measures 27 1/2" tall(top of dome) x c. 47" wide x c. 23" deep at the top(21 1/2"deep at the bottom; slight V shape) The trunk is made of very heavy(old grow

18th Century Chippendale Silver Gun Bench Chest Stand Mahogany Arms campaign
Up for consideration is a very rare Antique Chinese Chippendale Cabinet possibly on a later stand. It measures 16 inches deep by 22 1/2 inches in height by 33 1/8th wide. The interior looks like it was fitted at one time. The bottom board of the chest is softwood. It has some iron handles that are heart shaped on the sides. Probably original brass key escutcheon on the front with wonderful original old staining and patina. The top has somewhat of a Pagoda Shape and there are 2 holes drilled and plugged possibly for decorative plate or handle. Not sure if it was a gun pistol or arms cabinet. For silver or. that has been later converted into sort of storage bench. The legs are chamfered on the inside corner meaning the 90 degree has been shaved down making the corner a smooth flat surface. Nonetheless a very handsome piece. The lock mechanism ... moreis intact as well as upper piece.on top no markings on the lock. There is contemporary material covering the upper interior portion of the lid. Overall light wear great patina probably some minor repairs. The underside is blocked and glued. If you have any questions or concerns or something to share please email. I will post a few more pics. Antique 16th/17th Century German Oak Coffer On Stand
Here for sale is a beautiful old 16th or 17th century german oak coffer on probably later stand which at some point in time has been converted to a front double door opening cupboard. The coffer retains what I believe to be the original ironwork side handles hinges etc.The conversion work has resulted in the lid now fixed down. The timber is that delicious blackened aged oak colour and patina and the coffer itself is decorated with beautiful original panelling depicting what I think are coats of arms of the Holy Roman Empire. However please examine the photographs I have taken to form your own opinion. Also please feel free to ask any questions and I will do my best to answer them. The coffer sits on a lovely matching low stand but as I said I think it was a later addition. The measurements of the actual coffer without stand are 53 and a half ... moreinches in length x 25 inches deep x 24 inches high. When sat on the stand the whole piece stands at 35 and 3/4 inches tall. This is a magnificent piece of historic furniture and would look stunning stood in a hallway lounge or dining room area even an upstairs landing.Overall the coffer is in very good condition. Payment is by paypal only and must be paid within 48hrs of the end of the auction. There is no postage involved for obvious reasons so any buyer can either collect or arrange own courier. Alternatively I am prepared to deliver within a reasonable distance of the Downham Market area of Norfolk for a sensible price so if you are interested please message me first for a price. Also available to worldwide buyers although you are very welcome you will have to organise your own collection! Thanks for looking.

American Chippendale Walnut Antique Chest of Drawers, Pennsylvania c. 1780
PENNSYLVANIA CHIPPENDALE WALNUT ANTIQUE CHEST OF DRAWERS Probably Delaware River Valley c. 1780. Feet& brasses replaced Item# 411PKP29A This precious little American Chippendale bachelor's chest of drawers is a fine representation of rural Pennsylvania craftsmanship. Probably originating from the Delaware River Valley region. The chest is distinct for it's marvelous display of swirling walnut throughout the drawers and particularly in the top of the chest. This chaotic furling of the grain is almost coordinated between the drawers, the craftsman matching swirls only subtly to give cohesion to the facade. The construction is typical of the region. The drawers crafted with tulip poplar woods in the frame with the white pine planks in the bottom set perpendicular to the face against the rabbets in the sides with runners applied over ... morethis. Original rosehead nails tack the back edge of each drawer bottom and are strengthened with triangular blocks along the lip. Some care was shown in crafting the feet. All of which are 20th century replacements. With a robust sense of presence, the feet appear to be faithful representations of what would have been on the chest originally. While unfortunate that the feet have been lost, it is a relatively common issue due to the immense pressure the feet remain under and their susceptibility to breakage during moving. The price of the chest is reflective of the replaced feet, as a chest of this very attractive size and form should command an upper four figure market value with original feet. Any collector of period American furniture. Particularly anyone who enjoys the masculinity and rural qualities of Delaware River Valley furniture, will certainly cherish this fine bachelor's chest. It has such presence and movement in the wood under the glowing patina of the mellowed surface- it will be a wonderful addition to any period or classically decorated interior. Measurements: 20 1/4" D x 36" W x 32 9/16" H Condition Report: Early refinish. The shellac dry a

Massive 18th Century. Mid 1700's German Immigrants trunk. DomeTop wood and metal. Interior storage box with hand carved hinges. Hand forged iron work. Extremely thick wood. Impressive is the perfect adjective when describing the true craftsmanship of this nearly 300 year old relic. Very solid construction with wooden dowels and forged nails. Pictures do not do this piece justice. I do not have the key and the lock insert has been bent upwards to keep from locking. I was given this trunk by the last German family member to inherit the trunk of whom shipped it from Germany here to the U.S. Posted with
