Vintage 24" Sterling Silver CREED Rosary This rare 24" rosary has an 2 1/4" by 1 1/2" ornate crucifix. The Connector has Jesus and the sacret heart on one side and the mother Mary on the other. Each bead which may be Venetian glass( I'm not sure about this) is wrapped in an ornate silver wire wrap. The beads in the photo appear to have a blue tint but infact are white. There is nothing broken on the rosary. GENUINE EXTREMELY RARE CATHOLIC CHAPLAIN'S STERLING SILVER ROSARY. This is the real thing. Folks, and hardly ever found. During the First World War. The War Department issued brass silver washed rosaries to any Catholic soldier who requested one. Likewise, if a Catholic Chaplain requested a special sterling silver version of the enlisted style rosary, the Priest was given one. Because there were far fewer Chaplains than enlisted men, and given the fact that not all requested the silver rosary, there were far fewer of these special ones from the beginning. Over time. The Chaplains who possessed the silver rosaries often gave them away to soldiers under extraordinary circumstances, when giving one of the regular ones wasn't feasible. Some were lost, others confiscated by enemy captors; the already rare silver ball chain rosaries became ... moreever scarcer. Today it is nearly impossible to find one of these Sterling Silver ball chain rosaries. Many collectors know about them but have never seen one. luckier collectors might see or possess only one. The pouch isn't an original issue, but evidently was used by the Chaplain who used the rosary. Chaplains in ww1 gave out regular silver washed brass rosaries to Catholic soldiers who requested them. The Priests themselves. Had the choice of having for themselves the identical rosary, except the center and crucifix were made from sterling silver. Other than the stampings on the respective parts, there was no way to tell the clerical and regular rosaries apart. Often the chaplains gave out their personal rosary in extraordinary circumstances of war and many rosaries were no doubt captured by the enemy. Central medallion and chain- both center medallion and crucifix are marked"sterling" When fully extended, rosary measures 22" long. Crucifix measures just over 1 1/2" long and center medallion is 1/2" long. Chain measures 32" from center medallion around back to center and measures 6 1/4" from the top of the center medallion to the bottom of the crucifix. The cross however, is not. Rosary measures 18.5 inches around with a 2.5" Inch drop. The cross measures 33mm(1.3" Inches) long. Not counting the bale, and 22.85mm(0.9" Inches) wide. The chain and beads all tested Sterling. Rosary has no markings. In excellent condition. Weighs 9.7 grams. This piece was acquired from a German antique jewelry collector. Features: This is a very nice antique(Victorian era 1890's to to turn of 1900's) heavy Catholic Rosary necklace for woman or man. ALL metals made of sterling silver with 59 Rosary bead faceted white quartz stones. 59 is often the number of a Catholic Rosary) Stones are a PRE-1910 type briolette cut Austrian Rhine River white quartz stones(a more valuable type of rhinestone. Due to they orignated from the Rhine Silver) testing via refractometer within the higher quartz stone index. Stones are of very good quality. Stones total approx 94 cts, at approx 1.6 cts per stone. Rosary necklace is highly collectible. Considered rare. Has very impressive smith workmanship. Cross pendant portion has beautiful raised detail of Jesus. Done in earlier r epoussé work with back having what may be a blessed mark with name: D.S.
