Original 1872 I.N. Richardson Illuminated Holy Bible Gustave Dore WOW! Here is an Original 1872 I.N. Richardson Illuminated Holy Bible. It was published by I.N. Richardson& Co. Boston. Mass. and St. Louis, MO. This large 10” by 12 1/2” by 4” full title is: The Holy Bible, Containing The Old And New Testaments, Translated Out Of The Original Tongues, And With The Former Translations Diligently Compared And Revised; With The Apocrypha, Concordance And Psalms. The Text Conformable To The Oxford And The American Bible Society’s Standard Editions. An interesting section is the History of the Books of the Bible. Many of the illustrations were done by Gustave Dore then engraved by various artists. The covers are deeply embossed. The page edges are gilt. The front cover has the family name of“Walker” on it. Inside the marriage, birth and death ... morepages are filled out with the name Walker. There are two full color lithographs(illuminated) beginning book and the new testaments. There are 20 full page steel and wood engravings, 24 fine wood engravings nearly full page, and 400 engravings(many 1/2 page) The covers show wear especially at the bend between the covers and spine. The pages are toned as expected. I found some damage on one page in the index at the end. There is some foxing throughout the book. Mostly on the thicker pages that the steel and wood engravings are on. The color of the illuminated pages is bright and beautiful. There is a bit of a smell. Not too bad though. I didn’t notice the smell until I literally stuck my nose between some pages. Remember, sense of smell is subjective to the person smelling the item. If you have a sensitive nose then maybe you shouldn't bid on this. A nice addition to your collection. This is being sold with FREE SHIPPING to the United States. In the very beginning of the pages. There is a sections where information can be filled in. Parts of the sections have been completed. The wood box is in good condition. On the back there is a thin line in the wood and a couple of minor scratches. The savior picture inside has some areas where some of the paper has rubbed off(see photos#2& 3) The bible is about 8 5/8" x 5 1/2" x 1 3/4" thick. The box is about 9 3/8" x 6 1/2" x 2 7/8" thick.
