I do not see any cracks. There is a small chip on the base rim, and a pock mark above the “L” in the lettering. The jug seems to be empty, but I did not attempt to remove it.Approximate dimensions: 9.25” tall, 5.5” base diameter, and the opening is a little less than 1” in diameter.The Lederer Brothers retailers seem to have opened in 1894, and closed before too long, so that is a pretty good date of attribution for this jug. Offered for sale is a stoneware moonshine or whiskey two toned little brown jug. The mystery is if this piece has been buried for a long time. It is covered with a calciferous crust. The crust has partially broken away to reveal the buff body color with a dark brown"cap" on the top. The piece was hand thrown. There is a metal ring on the handle which appears to be original to the piece. The cork is still in the jug. There is one rough spot on the bottom edge of the jug(as shown in the photos) and some old chipping around the mouth. There are no cracks or other damage. The piece is 6-1/2" tall X 5" across. This is a wonderful piece of Pennsylvania Dutch Art History. This is a whiskey Stoneware Jug with a wooden handle and 2 ceramic holes for the bale. What makes it so special is that it has then hand painted by Paul"Papa" Horning circa 1964-1972. Paul Horning was native PA Dutch. Born in Nov 17, 1884 into a Mennonite family in Berks County. He rejected much of the faith and conservative style. Forced to leave school at the age of 10, he was self educated and actually taught school at the age of 25 for a few years. He was skilled in pen& ink, as well as cartooning and was sought after by the local newspaper for illustrations. Instead he went into banking, insurance, and sales. sr 1262013 I am not an antique dealer. This is being sold for a friend who has had this forever and has had to part with his collections due to hard times. So please feel free to ask any questions prior to purchase! This jug has lots of flaws or some say character. I cannot not find definitive markings. However, there are markings underneath the pour spout that we can not decipher. There also appear to be markings on the bottom that look like initials, but age has deteriorated it. The brown part of the jug is full of flea bites, comes with the cork. The base of the handle is not perfect but it looks like it was manufactured that way. The crock has a dent in it on the right hand side of the spout, as well as a square chip from the base of the bottom. There are also flea bites and flaws from manufacturer. For Sale is a RARE Vintage 1 Gallon Military Jug" It has the lettering for" 7th Cavalry Col. E. S. Godfrey dated1896. Has a pair of swords crossed in the middle of the front of the jug. No Cracks,No Hairlines, No Chips. Some of the lettering is faded. No makers marks on the jug. It is 10 1/2" tall and 7" round. This is a real beauty and Rare to find a old military jug in this great condition for the age. Hand applied handle. Just a few imperfections in the jug when it was made. Lettering is under the glaze. I searched E.S. Godfrey and found that he was later a Brigadier General and at one time served under General George Custer and was born in Kalida, Ohio 1843 and died in 1932 and was a veteran of indian wars and wrote several books. Antique Stoneware Whiskey Jug W/Corn-cob Stopper-Great Earthy Green Glaze ! Nice
Here we have a very nice stoneware whiskey jug. The color is amazing! Earthy green with a slight blue cast and a rusty brown showing through in some areas. Very clean inside and out thanks to the paper wrapped corn cob stopper that I believe is original to this jug. Fits perfect! Nice sized for tipping. Approx. 7 1/2" tall-6" at the top and 5 1/2 at the bottom. Slightly ovoid shaped. There are a few very small imperfections in the glaze where tiny bits of debris was glazed over and then came off later. Check close up of handle and see where the glaze ran around one of these.
