Chaucer and the Late Medieval World by Lillian M. Bisson. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 294 pages. Publisher: St. Martin’s Press; 1998) Divided between the ... moreouter world of affairs and the inner world of poetic insight. Chaucer sought to make sense of his changing, conflicting world. In“Chaucer and the Late Medieval World” Lillian M. Bisson examines the societal issues that the poet explored in his work. Bisson provides lively interpretations of Chaucer's texts, especially“The Canterbury Tales” in the context of the paradigmatic shifts taking place around him, and offers a broad historical overview. Often going back to the Early Christian period, Bisson helps the reader grasp the significance of those shifts. She focuses on three major areas of medieval life; religion, class/commerce, and gender; all of which were experiencing considerable change in the fourteenth century. The book builds a bridge between an unmediated encounter with Chaucer’s texts and the more specialized discussions found in most contemporary criticism. And provides a detailed analysis of Christian culture. Placing each topic in a broad cultural context, Chaucer and the Late Medieval World” helps the reader to better understand the questions that teased Chaucer’s imagination into poetry and to enter into the cultural conversation with which he engaged his audience. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Bisson places Chaucer's work in the context of some of the major cultural and social currents of his day. A time when the underpinnings of medieval society were undergoing substantive challenges and revision. Students will find this book particularly useful as a historical companion to The Canterbury Tales. It seeks to bring to non-specialists some of the excitement that the new interest in social history and popular culture is generating among scholars, and it attempts to serve the growing interest in inte

DIE FORM OHNE ORNAMENT Bucher Der Form Volume 1 First Edition. Published by the Deutscher Werkbund in 1924 Hardback without dust jacket 102 pages. Profusely ... moreillustrated with black and white photographic plates A significant moment in the history of the Modern Movement. Die Form ohne Ornament(Form without ornament) was an exhibition held by the Deutscher Werkbund(DWB) in 1924. The accompanying book became the first in their famous series of publications titled Bucher Der Form(Books on Form) The DWB was a colloboration of designers united by the rejection of Art Nouveau/Jugendstil in favour of purer forms reflecting mass production. Luminaries Bruno Paul. Peter Behrens, Richard Riemerschmidt, Josef Maria Olbrich and Wiener Werkstätte founder Josef Hoffmann were all among its founder members. The book. Which is full of black and white photographic plates, was remarkable at the time of publication in its exclusive celebration of artistic endeavour in the decorative arts inspired by industrial production. It features some important works from the Wiener Werkstatte and the early Weimar Bauhaus. Size: Approximately 19cm x 26cm Condition: Good to very good. Aside from a little expected yellowing on the end papers. Internally it is very bright and clean. The board covers are sound save for a light bump to the bottom of the spine, the echoes of which can be seen on some pages. There is some neat underlining in red to the text but no other inscriptions. In all, a lovely copy of the scarce first edition of a seminal text of modernism. Not to be missed. © Text and photographs by room_606. Please do not copy. IMPORTANT There are many more items in my shop that don't appear in regular item searches. The Romance of King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table by Sir Thomas Malory. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: ... more501 pages. Publisher: Weathervane Books; 1977) ISBN: 0517231360. This vigorous. Eloquent epic tale of valor is noted for having been written in the best English prose of the Fifteenth Century. The accompanying illustrations are, of course, a perfect example of the best illustrations of any century. The characters will be familiar: Lancelot and Guinevere, Tristan and Isolde, for this is the definitive account of the Arthurian legends, and Pollard's is the definitive abridgement. His preface says: The story of King Arthur and his knights is one of the greatest that men have ever made. Greater by far than that of Charlemagne, which had come into fashion a little earlier, greater perhaps even than the tale of Troy, already some 2,000 years old, which for some centuries it eclipsed. It is through the fifteenth century prose of Sir Thomas Mallory, in which homeliness and nobility go hand in hand, that it holds its place in our hearts. But the story itself was the outcome of the second half of the twelfth century and the beginning of the thirteenth, the days of England’s Henry II and his three turbulent sons Geoffrey, Richard Coeur de Lion, and John. In the days when the Arthurian romances were coming into existence. Violence, cruelty, and luxury were rampant. But the greatness of these evils called forth some great virtues to counter them. This story bears traces of these and is penetrated to its very core by the special virtues of days in which men were content to live dangerously, carrying their lives in their in their hands and willing to lay them down lightly rather than break the rules of the game or be faithless to work or friend. CONDITION: This is the special. Illustrated edition with 32 illustrations(illustrated by Arthur Rackham, 16 color, 16 black + white) Book has clearly never been read, the inside of the book is pristine. Pages are clean, crisp, un

Field Guide to American Victorian Furniture 1st Ormsbee 1952

Field Guide to Early Ameican . Furniture – Ormsbee 1951
One of the classics from the mid century hay day of antiques. This book is indispensible for its many pictures. And its discussion of ways to identify, period furniture and their alterations. Quilts, furniture, metalwork, woodwork, rugs and embroidery from the Sandy and Julie Palley collection. Sotheby's press release noted- The Palley's were passionate and dedicated collectors who immersed themselves in the world of folk art, from small regional shows in the beginning, to eventual trusteeships at the American Folk Art Museum. Over a span of nearly 30 years, they amassed a collection that reflected their determination to live with American Folk Art, and the January sale will feature that collection which was showcased in their beautiful ... morehome in Huntington Valley, Pennsylvania. This collection is particularly wonderful for its energy and vitality, as the Palleys were actively acquiring and enhancing their collection up until their untimely deaths. Each piece was acquired to be lived with and enjoyed by their families and friends, and the collection was very much a work in progress, and part of an ongoing evolving process. The Palley Collection comprises a number of different collecting categories within the field of American Folk Art while retaining a central focus on Pennsylvania German painted furniture" DESCRIPTION and CONDITION NOTES: Softcover. 8"x11" 100 pages, 84 lots, color illustrations. Field Guide to American Victorian Furniture 1st Edition Sofa Sideboard Bookcase
I have come into possession of some nice books that I will be auctioning off now and again. This auction is for a 1st edition book titled"Field Guide to American Victorian Furniture" by Thomas H Ormsbee. This is a great smaller pocket type book that covers many facets of the Victorian furniture period in America. It covers the high end pieces that would have been found in the mansions of the time to the more common items found in the farmhouse or the small business man in the village. There are many black and white drawings as examples of the period furniture and then you get the text describing the characteristics of the piece and similar pieces of the time. The book was published in 1952 and does have a lettering system that translates into a price range for the piece. It is interesting to compare the 1952 price to what is being ... morerealized today. Believe or not some pieces have not changed much in price range. This was a former Dunkirk Free Library book but was withdrawn from the shelves in the early 1970s. It has been in a private collection since then. The book is still in pretty good condition with some foxing to the cover. Other than that it is ready for use as a research book again. If you have any other questions let me know. I will do combined shipping and if you are waiting for the conclusion of another auction please let me know. I try to respond to all questions through Ebay messaging as soon as possible. But please realize that a question posed on the last day of the auction may not get an answer. Juggling the day to day schedule of 2 high school kids and everyday life sometimes takes precedent. I can usually catch questions first thing in the morning or late at night and please be aware that I am in the Eastern Time Zone. I would also like to take a moment to ask that you please do not ask me to end or create a buy it now price(if it does not have one) on any of my auctions after they have started. I do not consider that fair to those who may have the auction in their watch list nor in the t

Lode, vein, seam, or reef, which forms the mineralized package of economic interest to the miner. Mining of stone and metal has been done since pre-historic times. Modern mining processes involve prospecting for ore bodies. Analysis of the profit potential of a proposed mine, extraction of the desired materials, and final reclamation of the land after the mine is closed. The nature of mining processes creates a potential negative impact on the environment both during the mining operations and for years after the mine is closed. This impact has led most of the world's nations to adopt regulations designed to moderate the negative effects of mining operations. Safety has long been a concern ... moreas well. And modern practices have improved safety in mines significantly. Summary by Wikipedia FORMAT FOR THIS ITEM: All files are in.pdf format Viewable on computer equipped with Adobe Software. Mackintosh Furniture Architecture Decorative Design / Scholarly Book
CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH– ARCHITECT AND ARTIST by Robert Macleod. E.P. Dutton, Inc. NY, 1983. Illustrated in color and mostly black-and-white. This early out-of-print book follows the evolution of design and art Charles Rennie Mackintosh. When he designed a house he provided not only the structure but also the furniture and fittings, all receiving the same careful scrutiny because the were intrinsically equally important: Modern architecture, to be real, must not be a mere envelope without contents. Antique American Windsor Chairs - Comb-back, Bow-back - Great Illustrated Study
American Windsor Chairs” By Nancy Goyne Evans. Published in New York by the Hudson Hills Press& The Winterthur Museum in 1996. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The definitive book on American windsors. A scholarly history of the style and its development in America. An exploration of regional characteristics, with illustrations and descriptions of hundreds of examples, and a checklist of 2,400 chairmakers. A stupendous book! Publisher's Weekly noted- Thomas Jefferson sat in one, and so did New York City laborer John Cooper. The wooden Windsor armchair, introduced from England to Philadelphia in the 1730s by Penn family-sponsored governor Patrick Gordon, was initially a seat for the elite and prosperous, but after the Revolution it became the favorite chair of the general populace. Combining comfort, sturdy craftsmanship, ... moresimplicity and elegance, the Windsor chair, with its raked back and sculptural seat and its splayed legs, implying strength, is prized by collectors. Organized geographically from New England to the South, the Midwest and Canada, and augmented with more than 1000 illustrations(25 in color) and 24 maps, this encyclopedic study meticulously documents the Windsor chair's regional variations and the evolution of a recognizable American style. Decorative arts historian Evans brilliantly situates the chair within the cultural fabric of colonial and federal America. A must for collectors and scholars, this volume is published in association with the Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum of Wilmington, Delaware. Lancaster County Pennsylvania Furniture Maker Henry Lapp's's Design book
A Craftsman's Handbook. Henry Lapp” Published by the Philadelphia Museum of Art in association with Good Books in 1975. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A facsimile of a charming late 19th century Pennsylvania cabinetmaker's sample-book. Henry Lapp worked in the Lancaster/Philadelphia area. And probably carried this little notebook of hand-drawn and watercolored designs to show prospective customers samples of his work. The carefully drawn and brilliantly colored articles include chests, tables, cabinets, bins, storage chests, wheelbarrows, stepladders, toys and mousetraps. Lapp's style was simple but elegant, typical of the Quaker/Amish area in which he worked. Of particular interest are the colors he used, an array of yellows, oranges, greens, browns and purples, which present a vivid reminder that today's ... morefaded brown chest probably didn't start out that way. Beatrice Garvan wrote an introduction concerning Lapp and his family. DESCRIPTION and CONDITION NOTES: Softcover. 5"x8" 3 pages of text plus 47 color plates, slipcased. "Good Furniture" Magazine March 1916, Dean Hicks Co., Grand Rapids, MI
This magazine measures 12" by 9" Short of the back cover. Which I have photographed, the magazine's binding is perfectly intact. The front cover looks like it sat for a VERY one the with another magazine on top of it protecting it from aging in all areas except those that were exposed. The cover is torn at the top and bottom along the edge of the spine. There are a lot of pictures and articles. Of the 76 pages, pages 37 through to the back cover are water stained in the lower outer corner. It is full of ads, photos, and articles, even a color plate. Some of my photos are a little blurry, but the magazine itself is crisp. Questions and advice are always welcome. Please do not hesitate to ask for pictures or provide(gentle) criticism. You should double check the item’s description before your final bid should there be any updates ... moreor changes. Insurance is ALWAYS available at buyer’s expense. Livable Modernism by Wilson Heywood Wakefield Herman Miller Design Modernism
Shipping is free! One often untalked about subject in the field of Mid Century Modernism is how the style got that way to begin with. Enter: Livable Modernism by Kristina Wilson. In this book. She talks about the late 1930s-1940s switch from the overly aesthetic dazzle of the Art Deco 1920s to the idea of functionality within the interior space. Don’t get me wrong, late 30s-40s furniture, clocks, and other items still had a very unique and awesome style all their own, but during this time frame that wasn’t always the primary concern. This was also the time that designers began to realize more and more that their designs also had to be functional, comfortable, and*homey* in a way to meet the needs and concerns of everyday people. This book does a fantastic job, both textually as well as pictorially, at conveying the ideas of the author. A ... moregreat book for those interested in interior design as well as antiques, so just bid! Condition: The dust jacket has a tiny little ding in the very lower tip corner and very upper left corner. But those are the only problems I could find, and even then they’re miniscule. The pages are all there and crisp and clean, and overall this is just a great conditioned book. Terms: Payment must be made within 2 days of the auction's end. Shipping is free and is available within the U.S. only(Sorry, I've had too many problems with overseas shipments) must be in the form of Paypal using a verified Paypal shipping address, and all auctions are final so please ask any and all questions prior to bidding.
