Childs Brown Aesthetic Transferware Creamer WATER HEN Charles Allerton& Sons Staffordshire. England c.1880 This transfer printed toy cream pitcher or milk jug circa 1880 was originally part of an early child's or doll house play tea set. The color is sepia or chocolate brown against a creamy white earthenware. The pear shaped pitcher stands about 3 5/8" tall with a scalloped rim and applied handle. It features a water hen or Guinea Hen(the English name for the American Coot) feeding in a lily pond with cat tails and reeds. The background is an aesthetic composition of lush flowers. Swallows, and an inset of a castle. There is a zig zag patterned trim along the rim. This pattern is pictured and discussed in Lorraine Punchard's Playtime Porcelain and Pottery as well as Petra Williams' Romantic Staffordshire. The jug is ... moremarked Staffordshire England. The pattern name is WATER HEN registered with number 754 by Charles Allerton and Sons. A pottery manufacturer in the Staffordshire region of England who was well known for his whimsical children's tea sets. The little jug is in great condition. With no chips cracks or repairs. The workmanship is haphazard, which is one of the reasons many people collect it.not fine china, and not meant to be; it was made for children and probably considered disposable. The transfers are not aligned neatly, there is runny glaze and little bumps and dips and transfer wrinkles and glazed over edge frits original to the making. HILDITCH Cream Jug London Shape with Puce Flowers 1815
HILDITCH Cream Jug London Shape with Puce Flowers 1815 F or auction an early Hilditch cream jug. The pitcher is cast in a two part mold and in London shape. Not marked. Decorated with puce flowers. Leaves and squiggles. The surface has a very soft feel, sort of sandy. No where near as finely made as Hilditch items of 1825-30. W hen I purchased this a few years ago the seller provided this information: An elegant Regency period creamer. the jug conforms to the known Group A shape" but the seller could not find any recorded precedent for the pattern which"is a simple hand painted continuous band of puce flower heads and tendrils. The handle. Which has a small spur near the lower terminal, is painted on the strap with a puce band below a trefoil motif. T he seller continued: I recently came across this pattern in a watercolour painting ... moreby Bill Brown in the reference Hilditch Porcelain by Margaret Hewat and June Owen. Here it is recorded as a simple early pattern of unknown number. Similar to other known pattern numbers in the range 7 to 23. The body has a fine translucency, with a creamy silky glaze without crazing. There is some kiln dust in the glaze to the side of the handle and light staining inside which could be cleaned. T his makes a lovely pitcher that will go well in a display. C ondition: No chips or cracks or crazing. The decoration is in very good condition. There are some frit marks on the foot rim and what seems to be a glaze bubble that broke near the center of the base. There is also frit in the glaze along the edge of the uppermost part of the handle. The interior is tanned as if creme was left in for too long. And there is a rough area about mid-way along the foot on the right side. Don't know what this is. M easurement: about 5 3/4 inches at its longest length from handle to spout. Here is a large 4-gallon antique stoneware jug crock made in Keene. New Hampshire. I can't quite make out the top line, looks a lot like J. S. Taft, xxxx-xx- N.Y. but not sure. It has an elaborate cobalt blue decoration with vines, flower and leaves, tendrils etc. This jug is about 19" tall and approx. 10-3/4" across the diameter at the base and about 34-35 inches in circumference at the widest part of the jug. The top and side(of the spout) have very old chips. There is an"in-the-making" defect in the front that you can view with the e-bay magnifier. Pre 1900 Hand Turned Albany Slip Jug With Spout
Beautiful antique Albany Slip jug originally made for Molasses. The jug is marked with a capital"A. The"single letter marks on jugs and crocks(especially Albany slip items) were to identify the merchant where they originated from and were intended to be returned to. If you went to the store for a gallon of vinegar and didn't bring your own container. The storekeeper would loan you one. Most small towns might only have one or two stores and a simple capital letter would suffice to prove ownership. The hand turned Albany slip jugs generally date back to pre 1900. It is a hand turned piece and the shape is a little different than usual. You can see the turning marks in the piece. It is also unusual to see spouts on these pieces. The jugs usually have a rounded top. Some small cracks/imperfections as pictured. Keep in mind the age ... moreof this piece. It was used by my great grandfather and I am 84 years old. A very impressive 19thC. 3Gal. Salt glazed Jug with a cobalt-washed stamp on the shoulder that reads: F.B. NORTON& CO. WORCESTER, MASS. The mark dates between 1858-1877, when Frank Norton partnered with Frederick Hancock. This Beauty features a finely-executed Floral Plume. Extending 12" diagonally on the front of the Jug. The Cobalt is thick and bright; it will draw attention from across a room! There is a small ding on the base; otherwise mint, with no other post-production flaws. I have here an antique light grey glazed 2 gallon stoneware whiskey jug made by W. H. Jones& Co. sometime in between the years of 1851 and 1901. For it's age it is in excellent condition. Up for bids is this Antique American Redware Figural Jug Coin Bank- Dated 1792 with an inscription about saving. The inscription is in ink and dated April 12. 1792 which is probably not when this piece was made because this piece looks like it dates between 1830's and 1850's. But the inscription of 1792 could be right we just are not sure. The writing is very light and difficult to see in the photos and there are fingerprints potted into this piece. The redware jug stands 4 7/8" high and has a 2 1/2" base diameter. Condition is good with some flea bites. There is one on the top rim where the lip is near the redware cork and some much smaller ones with some on the opening where coins are inserted. No cracks or repairs. A 19thC. Salt-Glazed Jug with Primitive Floral decoration in dark. Brushed Cobalt, ca.1860-1880. The Jug is unmarked, but probably a piece from Upstate New York, likely made at one of the Hudson River Valley manufactories(Troy, Athens, etc) There is a small, shallow chip on the base(lower left) and an area of discoloration(rear, right) otherwise excellent. The stone pop occurred during production, prior to the addition of the salt glaze(see close-up) A desirable size, this 1Gal. displays beautifully and will complement any Early American Stoneware collection. Antique 1830-1840 Early Stoneware Jug Egg-shaped Great Condition Maker Signed
This Morning's Auction has an Early Antique Stoneware Brown Jug(Circa 1830-1840) which was signed possibly by an individual making a few jugs out in his farm or wherever and putting his own name on the few jug or jugs that he made himself for whatever reason. He might have made them for personal use for him or possibly his wife in storing different things in their kitchen or whatever. Back in that era it was common for stores to have their own name on crocks and jugs to display different products of their own. Etc. These type of Stoneware aren't very common, but some still exist and this one is still in good condition with it's egg-shaped design and somewhat crude glaze. If someone should have that name in their lineage going back almost two hundred years it would be a rare find. It's quite hard to make-out the letters, the ... moresingle Letter M could be an H, etc. The PUR is pretty certain and most likely L, but after that it's very unclear. This jug would make a great conversation piece in a collection, either for it's age and shape or for the name. It's about 11 1\4 inches tall and 7 1\2 inches at the widest point. I've taken photos from all directions to help show you what it looks and no damage. As I mentioned it's in terrific condition with no chips or cracks and the glaze fell a little short near the base. This is a beautiful 2 gallon Salt Glaze Stoneware Jug with the#2 and"Bee Sting" design in cobalt blue. It stands about 16 inches high and measures about 9 1/4 inches across the base. It has a bunch of"turkey dropping" salt glaze marks from when it was fired. It also shows that unique speckling around the top of the jug from the salt glazing process. A TENNESSEE VINTAGE SPECIAL* Located this somewhat rare Mercury Jug in Nashville! 1- Vintage maybe Antique Mercury Crock or( small jug) used to transport and store Mercury. On the Jug it is printed"MERCURY" in Blue. On the bottom has a 10 embossed. This may indicate a 10-lb. weight when filled. No cork with this little Jug/Bottle. Color is Tan and dark Brown. The Jug measures approx. 6"1/8" tall x 3-5/8" base x 1 3/8" spout. Weighs approx. 1-lb-3 oz. This Jug is in very good condition. No cracks and no chips. 4 OLD MINIATURE MOCHAWARE ENGINE-TURNED CHECKERED PITCHER TANKARD Mug Toy Child
I am listing a variety of nice Antique and Vintage Items this week. Here is an Interesting Lot of FOUR DIFFERENT OLD MOCHAWARE BLUE AND BROWN CHECKERED PATTERN MINIATURE PITCHERS AND TANKARD. The tallest brown glazed pitcher is 1-15/16" tall and the shortest brown glazed stout jug or pitcher is 1-3/8" tall. They have some decent age to them. But uncertain of precise age. I've not seen mochaware pieces this small before. They are all coming out of a nice-quality collection of various old miniature china pieces- most of the other pieces in collection were either 19thC to Early-20thC vintage. Condition: The four pieces are in various conditions with wide blue pitcher being the worst having a missing handle. The blue tankard-shaped pitcher has only a glaze fleck on the top rim and a shallow chip to the foot. The tall brown pitcher ... morehas three knicks to the top rim- otherwise ok. The shorter brown pitcher has a shallow chip to the top rim along with a glaze-fleck near the spout as well as a chip to the bottom foot. There is crackling in the glaze on all four. Here is a vintage stoneware. Porceline, or ceramicone-handled jug or pitcher. Measures about 2 ¾” tall. Has 3 colors, a rose/darkpink, a light pink, and an off-white or cream color. It shows tiny imperfections around the top lip and one defect in the center of the body of the jug(see pictures) It also shows evidence of the potters hand in small ridges that are typical and expected in these pieces.
