vintage stoneware wine jug, with handle and cork aged decor
This is a heavy classic stoneware wine jug it is believed to be from around the 1920's since it was my girlfriends grandmothers she got when she was in her early 20's and she currently is 93. It weighs a lone 6.83 pounds and has a glazed finished as you can see. There are marks as I have shown and that helps with the description. The age marks has not effected the integrity of this item at all. I just want this item to go to a good home and with someone who might have more information on this and can appreciate it. Offered is a beautiful old top-heavy jug made of sturdy stoneware. It has a chocolate brown finish that I believe to be Albany Slip glaze. And comes with a cork which I have not removed due to its brittleness…I will leave that to the buyer. The jug is 8” tall, with a base diameter of 5 ½” and an upper half diameter of 6” I’m sorry that I cannot tell you the volume it holds, but my guess is about ½ to ¾ gallon. Although that is a size you don’t often run across. It is not marked by the maker that I can see. It is in excellent condition, especially since it is over 100 years old, with no chips or cracks. 1850-1880'S "Beehive" Ovoid Salt Glaze Stoneware Jug With Orignal Cork
This is a 19th to very early 20th CENTURY OVOID SALT GLAZE STONEWARE JUG with COBALT MOTIF. VERY LARGE VINTAGE STONEWARE JUG. VERY UNUSUAL TO HAVE THE ORIGINAL CORK(wood stopper) The JUG is called a“BEEHIVE” style and the motif on the front of the jug is supposed to be a bee. It is Pennsylvania-New York Stoneware. 1850-1880, but it could be from several makers. the piece is hand painted. Stoneware like that is fired to a VERY high temperature(about 2300 degrees F) and about 1720, American potters began producing a form of stoneware developed in many Europe centuries earlier-stoneware glazed with salt and decorated with cobalt blue with a Beautiful Symbol painted in Blue. Salt glazed stoneware like this was very common in the 19th-Century America and potters produced it all over the country, sometimes stamping it with their maker’s marks- ... morebut most of the time, they did not put on an actual name-like this one. Pretty sure with the photos you have listed that this jug is a quarter gallon rather that a half gallon. I am not aware of anyone who has actually measured the capacity of the canteens but for over 40 years this size is considered the quart. I already have a set but my two half gallons could be upgraded. Your jug is an exceptional example of this rare piece. This jug was found in an old barn in Pennsylvania and is believed to have been used for Maple Syrup or possibly moonshine. With the spout I would say more likely syrup. The cork was in the jug when found. So I left it. There is some damage to the top as shown in the photos and a crack in the bottom of the handle at the bend. For sale is a large vintage two-tone 2 gallon whiskey stoneware crock jug. It stands 16" tall and is 8 1/2" across the bottom and weighs almost 14 lbs. The wording on the tan section is Mile End Distillery Co. Ltd. 86, Mile End Road, E. 2. Overall the jug is very clean and in very good condition, the only flaw I can see on it is a hairline crack on the back side(see photo 4) I do not know if the crack goes all the way through, or if is just in the glaze, but it does not take away from the appearance of the item. Here is a nice antique that I know nothing about. I'll describe for you. But please refer to the pictures. It was made by"Poloran Products" out of New Rochelle, New York. I've no idea of the age. I've tried to show the rust damage in the pictures. The label is in pretty good condition. The body is made of metal. The handle is metal and wood, while the cap(top) is plastic. It stands at approximately 17.5 inches tall with handle extended, and 12 inches wide. When filled with water, it does leak from the spigot. So, it may be missing a plug, or something. Odd Old Glazed Jug with Finger Loop - Nice
Old Glazed Jug with a Finger Loop and Pinched Sides This item was very dirty and had several mud-dauber wasp nests built onto it when I got it. I scrubbed it thoroughly with a tough scrub brush and clean water. It was very difficult to get the wasp nests off and I can tell you that this jug is VERY solidly built. The handle is firm and the pinches along the sides give the piece strength. I do not find any markings on it. The inside and top are nicely glazed and the lower outside is a natural texture with a sandy feel to it. It is 8" tall and the bottom is 5" in diameter. It's a heavyweight at almost 3 pounds. I know little about these things. So the photos will have to be most of the description. Note that some of the photos were taken with a flash and some are natural light. USSERY Water Valley Mississippi.This unique pottery jug still has the original piece of corn cob that was used as stopper for it and was found in an old barn just outside of Oxford back a few years ago.It will measure approximately 10 1/2 Inches tall and is still in pretty good condition it was covered in so many dirt dabbers nest when found that couldn't even see the handle of it.The name on it has worn off a good bit but you can still make out most of it. What a wonderful piece to add to or to start a collection with and would look great in a primitive kitchen! Below I have provide some information that I found regarding this pottery maker that I thought would be helpful to those interested in knowing more about its history. Logan(1907:176) notes that in the northwest part of Calhoun County. Along the Pittsboro-Trusty-Water Valley road, there were outcrops of white Wilcox clay, and that they were used at one time in a small hand stoneware pottery on the Ersery plantation(Logan 1909:176) Following up on this indication of economically important stoneware clay in Calhoun County, Lusk(1961:62) notes that in the late 1880s B. F. Ussery operated a small hand pottery in northwestern Calhoun County where he made stoneware pitchers, jars, churns, jugs and crude tableware from the undifferentiated upper part of the Wilcox formation, where exposures of clay are generally silty or sandy, thin and infrequent. The"last" site of Ussery's pottery was believed to be on the north side of the old Branner to Water Valley Road near Union Grove Church. HERE'S a fine authentic genuine 19th c salt glazed Stoneware Jug recently acquired at a high end sale in Westchester New York. It was sold to us at circa 19th century. This is a nice example of primitive stoneware. The Jug is stamped in blue with a block style"M" and"1 1/2" in a crest. The 1 1/2 refers to the size of 1 1/2 quarts. As the pictures show it is in nice condition with some glaze loss at the very top of the jug. There are no hairlines or repairs. Just an honest old piece that has lasted time. It weighs 8 pounds. A Vintage Dome Top Little Brown Jug"I have a few good reasons for drinking. And one just has just entered my head. If a man can't drink when he's living how the hell can he drink when he's Dead? It has no chips. Cracks, or repairs. The piece does have crazing as it should for its age. This is ca. 1940s- 1960s give or take? The jug's 4 7/8" tall. It's beautiful jug with a very cool phrase. Cobalt Blue Bird Jug, NEW YORK, STONE WARE CO., FORT EDWARD, N.Y., ca. 1875-82
Up for sale without reserve is a 2 gallon cobalt blue decorated jug stamped: NEW YORK. STONE WARE CO. FORT EDWARD, N.Y. It has a single handle and tan/gray glossy glazed surface and dates from around 1875-1882. On the front is a beautiful flower in medium to dark cobalt blue. It has a tall lip with two incised decorative lines going around the neck. The condition is excellent and solid, with no hairlines, cracks or repairs. As you can see in the pic's it has been drilled to make it a lamp. There are two glaze drips from the original firing that can be seen in the photos, and there is a small older surface rim chip that can be seen in the photo. The dark brown glaze has a couple of factory firing defects where bubbles formed under the glaze and popped. The footwarmer had a fall at one time and landed on the top. Causing the ring to bend. The sides of the cap also show five stress cracks which will not leak. There are stamped patent markings on the top and"Do Not Put In Hot Stove" incise-marked on the bottom. Shipping weight is 8-lbs. For sale is a Antique North Carolina Earthenware Moonshine Jug circa 1870. The jug was found in a hand hewn log barn by the owner who said the barn was built in the 1860's. The jug was under the floor in a space between the rock foundation. It is possible that it was put there after the barn was built. The jug is about 9.75" tall and 7" in diameter. The jug has something in it and even though I have washed it out there is still something inside. It is possible that a bird or other animal had made a nest inside. It is very heavy weighing over seven pounds. The way the jug is made confirms it's early creation. The glaze is glass and salt which confirms the approximate age of 1850-1880. The jug is in good antique condition with no chips or cracks. Please examine the photos carefully. Here's a cool little Redware jug we picked up in thrift shop recently here in North Carolina. This little gem stands about 5.5" tall by maybe 4" in diameter. I'm figuring it is about 1 pint capacity. Pints and half pints are usually pretty rare. So matter what area of the country they are from, and this one is really nice. The color is almost black, and I would guess it's a dark manganese glaze on it. I know these photos are not my best effort(pic editor is on the fritz) but I think you can clearly see it's obviously hand turned. The only flaw I see on it is a smll briuse on the side edge of the handle. No other damages, and no repairs. It's not what I collect, so maybe somebody out there will give it a good home. Antique Stoneware: *NR* 2G NY Jug w/ Cobalt Floral, N.A. White, Utica, ca.1875
A tremendous 19thC. Cobalt Floral on this 2Gal. Jug from Upstate New York. The Cobalt-Washed stamp is crisp and clear; it reads: N.A. WHITE& SON. UTICA, N.Y. This mark was used from 1865-1886. There is a base chip, a stone pop, a ding and some roughness on the spout, and two kiln marks(to the left of the capacity stamp, and right side) otherwise excellent with no hairlines, cracks, repaired damage or restoration work. The included cork is firmly seated in the spout and appears original. Please see photos for complete details, close-ups and further description. Vintage Small Jug - Derwentwater Friar's Crag - Cut-out Design
Very nice collectible small porcelain jug with handle and beautiful cut-out design. It has a scene on it and says Derwentwater Friar's Crag. Texas were he had a Gardening and Nursery store, along ... morewith thirty acres which he worked. This would be his for livelihood the next twenty years until he contracted Malaria; after seeing many doctors who would prescribe many different medicines with all having no results. In his book from 1890"Microbes and the Microbe Killer" Radam stated"I swallowed the contents of bottle after bottle until their number became too great to calculation. I took quinine until it failed to have any effect" This is when he began his own journey to cure himself. On September 28 1886 Radam would patent his Microbe Killer. He reportedly began selling his Microbe Killer Elixir at the Dallas State Fair by the jug. In December 13 1887 he secured his trade mark for Microbe Killer. It was a young well clothed business man swinging a club at a skeleton. Radam claimed that the Microbe Killer could cure disease and conquer death. Business was so good by 1888 he had the Koppel Building built on the site where his nursery once was. By 1890 Radam would leave Austin. Civil War Era Stoneware glazed jug & crock
These 2 items have just recently been dug.they are Civil War era. Crock& Jug. both are in amazingly beautiful condition for their age.The JUG is Beehive.glossy and chocolate brown. the crock is a Tan and gray combo in color.neither have cracks or chips.nice addition to any collection. Antique Polychrome Metlach Beer Stein
Up for auction is a nice. Large antique Metlach beer stein with intricate enamel polychrome design: figures and pattern. The stein is 13 3/4" high and 6" wide across the top. Masterfully sculptured pewter lid, which has a personal inscription in German in old Gothic letters. According to this inscription this stein was a gift to the head of the carpenter's guild of the German town Koesen(Sachsen-Anhalt) to celebrate the his 25th anniversary of becoming a master craftsman.
