Antique J. C. Schnell's Whiskey Jug Stoneware Ohio Salt Glaze Advertising
This whiskey jug is from the J.C. Schnell& Co. liquor store of Cincinnati Ohio. It is circa 1880-1900 Standing 8 1/2 inches tall. The jug is marked"J. C. Schnell's Sour Mash Kiln Dried Grain Whisky. Within the incised lettering is the Maltese cross. There are two small chips to the rim as shown in the pictures, and no other cracks or damage. The brown spot on the front is a kiln burn, where another jug rubbed against this one during firing. This is a really cool old advertising jug, and displays very well, with the old vintage cork included. Please see all the pics, as they show things in detail. This jug comes from an old collection that has not seen the light of day in over 30 years.

Up for bid is a very old salt glaze jug.This jug is in remarkable condition considering it's age.Alot of people like to collect the old redwing salt glaze or the primitive salt glaze jugs.But the old utilitarian ones have a much better history.this jug is that jug.This jug was unearthed at a local strip mining job sight.The young man running the machine after moving tons of dirt noticed a wooden shed buried beneath him,he carefully removed the dirt and inside this underground wooden shed where these salt glaze jugs,he told the others on the job site of his find some where still in tact,and I was given 2,now the law requires that they call someone in the case where they unearth any type of historical items,but this shuts down there job,they didn't want there job shut down and have to miss any work so they salvaged the good ones and ... morekept on working.The guys had no idea what the shed full of jugs was used for some thought a water shed for underground miners this area was common for coal mines.Others thought maybe moonshine jugs hidden from the law.I don't suppose we will ever know if they where for water or whiskey jugs,they are very primitive jugs.They would fit into many decors country primitive even equestrian,it is in good condition no cracks.I f you have any questions please email me and thanks for the look.I will be listing the other one as well.

An exceptional 19thC. Stoneware Batter Jug with Cobalt Decoration. Northeastern US, ca.1870; 1.5 Gal. capacity. Shiny, salt-glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior- it is perfect. Wonderful bulbous form with a generous spout and lower lug handle to assist the pour. The bale handle appears original with appropriate wear, as shown. These Decorated Batter Jugs are very difficult to find without significant damage, repairs or restoration. They were used almost daily in the Early American kitchen, and most were simply discarded when damage occurred. There is a small chip on the backside, near the handle; and a ding on the right side(see close-up) otherwise mint. There is a tight separation at the top of the spout, but I would consider this a production flaw. No hairlines, cracks, repairs or restoration work. Check out my other items! A great early jug with hand painted flowers. The jug is marked DILLWYN Swansea on the base and most likely dates from the early 1800s. The jug is decorated on each side and has a green handle. The body is an earthenware with a tin glaze that is similar to majolica. It is 6 1/2 inches high and 6 3/8 inches wide from spout to handle. It is in fine condition with crazing to the glaze. There are three or Four teeny tiny glaze flakes on the rim. The mark dates between 1858-1877, when Frank Norton partnered with Frederick Hancock. Up for auction is a very Old American Clay Pottery Jug. I know nothing about Old American Jugs. A friend looked at them and I will tell you what he told me. Thus the title: Old Crockery Demi John Stoneware Bottle Decanter Clay Pottery Beige Glaze Jug. He said that it has an applied handle-you can see the thumb print where it attached to the jug. It is pre 1900 and it is very crude. You can see all of the imperfections under the glaze. Globs of clay, and gouges out of the clay, star hairlines, all under the glaze. You can tell that this is hand thrown. It is so crudely finished. The base is not glazed, it has a nipple in the center with some chips on the edge of the base. Please look at the pictures, they are a very important part of the description. This jug is just under 10 inches tall, 5 1/2 inches across at the base, 1 1/2 inches across ... moreat the mouth and 18 3/4 around. This Jugs color is really inbetween the light and dark colors on listing, more of a medium in color. the lighter in color. The 2 colors that are in the pictures are from the flash. Up for auction is a vintage pottery jug. It has a corn husk stopper and a hemp rope handle. There is a maker's mark stamped into the jug. But I cannot read it. It looks like Geramick Bledea or Geramok Bledea, but I can't be sure. There is something else at the bottom like Rainmare or something. It measures 9" high and 4-1/2" wide at the widest part. For your consideration is a two gallon bottom marked. Cone top jug made by Minnesota Stoneware Company of Red Wing, Minnesota. This company was founded in 1883 and existed until 1906, when it merged with Red Wing Stoneware and the merged company became known as Red Wing Union Stoneware Company. The glaze on this jug indicates it was manufactured after 1895; the bottom marking indicates it was manufactured before the merger happened in 1906. This stoneware jug has a total height of approximately 13 3/8" from the surface it is setting on, to the shoulder is approximately 8 7/8" and the bottom is approximately 8 7/8" in diameter. On the shoulder, are three chips; two of which are very minor. Around the bottom edge are some minor chips. All chips are in one or more pictures. Old Stoneware Glazed Crock/Jug for Whiskey or Moonshine Maybe?
This is an old stoneware/ceramic jug/crock that has been in storage for a lot of years. Could it have been used for whiskey or moonshine? It is a tannish gray at the bottom with brown at the top. No markings on it and no cork. Does have the usual blemishes that come with something this primitive and has a small chip at the bottom(could have been original) I'm not a good judge- this is probably about a one gallon size. Extremely Scarce 1890's Utah Liquor Co. 1/2 Gallon stoneware canteen with the original handle. No cracks or chips. This canteen is in amazing condition. This canteen shaped stoneware 1/2 gallon jug is a very rare piece with 10 or less known to exist. Made by the Whites Pottery. Utica, New York factory for the Utah Liquor Company. Whites Pottery, Utica, NY is famous for their cobalt paddletail and running bird stoneware designs that sell for thousands of dollars. It is salt glazed with cobalt blue. The front has the words"Utah Liquor Company and 167 South Main St" The backside features a scene of three men drinking. Below is more about the canteen and the Utah Liquor Company. One of the most prolific of the Utah liquors firms was the Utah Liquor Company. This firm is first noted in the 1894 in the Salt Lake City Directory. The ... moreinitial establishment was at 167 South Main Street, a locale it kept through 1902. The canteens are among the most appealing examples of Utah stoneware. Each features on the front the advertisement UTAH LIQUOR CO/ 167 SOUTH MAIN STREET/ SALT LAKE CITY with the reverse of one featuring three drinking men and the other a picture of two standing elk. The canteen with the drinking scene is known in the 1/4 and 1/2 gallon sizes while the one featuring the elk is a gallon in capacity. The jug for this business address is a two-tone shouldered jug known in the 1/2 gallon and gallon sizes. It is stenciled in a flower blossum rectangular border(fleur-de-lis) UTAH(fleur-de-lis) LIQUOR CO. 167 SOUTH MAIN ST. SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
