It measures 16" by 9" by 4 1/2" The exotic wood veneer(possibly ... moremahogany) has a very dramatic and variable grain that ranges from amber to black. The exquisite top features a radiant Mother of Pearl Cartouche( 2" by 1" with no engravings or markings) It has eight Mother of Pearl Discs that are positioned near the corners. The discs are connected by pewter'stringing lines' to form two rectangles on the top. I believe that the two shortest pewter'stringing lines' on the ends of the inner rectangle may be replacement pieces. There are also four Mother of Pearl discs on the front of the box. Connected by pewter'stringing lines' These also form a rectangle. The escutcheon has an inlay that is a bone color. But does not appear to be Mother of Pearl. The top opens to reveal a green velvet fabric-covered writing slope which appears to be original. There are five separate compartments for ink wells. Nibs, wax, stamps etc. There is also a removable concave pen tray with storage space beneath it. The green velvet-covered'top partition' pulls down with a black grosgrain tab to expose a storage compartment. The storage compartment measures 14 1/4" by 7 1/4" For stationary. The green velvet-covered'bottom partition' pulls open with a black grosgrain tab to expose a storage compartment. This storage compartment measures 14 1/4" by 5" For letters. The hinges and fittings are brass and there is a flush brass handle on each end of the box. There is a small chip in the veneer on the left front corner(photo#3) There is a 1/2" segment of the pewter'stringing line' that is missing in the same area. There are some cracks in the veneer on the top. The left side of the top and the front. There are cracks in the interior linings of the box. Condition: Used Location: Novato, United States I am not an expert but an antique furniture appraiser looked at this piece recently and stated this is a unique desk that he's never seen one quite ... morelike it. It was likely made in the early 1900's. Made of oak. And has a spooncarved front. There are no identifying markings. It is in excellent shape and it has the original finish. Brass fittings show a bit of tarnish but should clean up easily with a little TLC. Three of the posts on the brass rail at the top are loose but can be easily secured with a little bit of attention. One of the rail ends is stripped so that will need to be secured as well. Otherwise this piece is ready for your home. I would be happy to provide more detailed photos if requested. I hate to part with such a beautiful and unique item but we no longer have the room and it just doesn't fit our decor. Antique school desk. Except for hardware the desk top and cubby are made entirely of wood. Desktop does have a crack in the top of it with a little accompaning warp traveling the entire length of the desktop. See picture# 3. However there is a conspicuous lack of scratching. Gouging or grafitti. I don`t think this was ever sanded down either. The steel base may have been painted over at some time as I see brush marks in the paint job. Whatever the case it was done a long time ago. I`m pretty sure this was made for younger kids. I don`t think any kid beyond third or fourth grade would be comfortable in this all day. The size of the seat and base are a little on the small side. The top however is full sized. It also is old enough to be sporting an ink well hole. Seat is in great shape. Nothing loose. Minimal cracking if any. No warp. No graffiti. ... moreMeasurements. Desktop. 24 x 18 inches. Seat 14 x 12 inches. Minimum height of desktop from the ground. 22 1/2 to 24 inches. It`s tapered. 22 1/2 inches at the low end and 24 inches at the high end. Both top and seats heights are adjustable. The top has an apprx. 6 inch adjustment range and the seat apprx. 4 inches. So you can move them up from the values described above. Adjustments made by setting a 1/4 hex nut. See picture# 6. Thats for the top. The seat has an identical set screw of it`s own. If you leave that screw loose the seat swivels. Thats a nice bonus but it only works if the seats all the way down. Base measures 28 1/4 x 18 1/4 inches. Weight without packaging apprx. 45 lbs. I know it is really old from the early 1900's and has not been refinished there is minor scratches due to age. But over all in wonderful condition. The drop down has 3 small drawers the right side arm that comes out when you pull down the drop down is missing it is the arm that should be next to the top drawer on the right see picture. Slightly arched back with shaped handholds on ring turned legs. Probably Northern New England Condition…structurally sound with silk upholstery that dates at least 150 years old in need of a change to bring out the brilliance of the increasingly hard to find piece of furniture. 19th c French Empire Mahogany Marble Top Dressing Table Vanity w Gilt Ormolu
Being presented for sale is this fabulous 19th century French Empire Mahogany Marble top Dressing Table Vanity with gilt ormolu. The details on this piece are truly beautiful! Brass accents adorn the mirror supports with brass acorn knobs securing the oval mirror to the supports. The original white& grey marble is inserted into the vanity top. A storage drawers below with a gorgeous angel type ormolu key escutcheon. The lock is present in the drawer but we do not have the key. Flanking the drawer are Roman Goddess type faces with plumage ormolu below.just splendid! This piece measures 55 inches to the top of the mirror. Height to the marble base measures 31 inches, with a width of 22 inches and a depth at the base of 15 1/2 inches and this piece weighs approximately 60 lbs. The old oval mirror measures 14 3/4 inches wide by 20 1/4 inches ... morehigh and the mirror does have some very minor spotting. The mirror does pivot front to back allowing you to adjust the angle of the mirror. I have for sale an antique Moulthrop school desk and chair. It was made in the early 1900's by Langslow Fowler. Which was a early manufacturer of Arts and Crafts furniture in Rochester. NY. They competed with Gustav Stickley. Stickly Brothers and Roycroft. It is made of oak and iron hardware. The chair has a drawer that slides open for books. There is a inkwell holder is attached to the metal brace on the side. The black metal brace has the name MOULTHROP stamped on the bottom. And it can be raised to adjust the desk height. Angle and depth(can slide forward and back) The seat height from the floor is 16.5" The desk can adjust height from 27.5" to 31.5" The desk depth can slide from 9.5" to 14.5" The size of the desk top is 12" by 16" This is a very solid well built. For auction. From a Tennessee estate, is a Very Nice Sheraton Style Desk Made by Imperial Furniture Co. Grand Rapids Michigan c1939. The desk appears to be mostly Mahogany. I am not sure about the carving. The desk has 3 leather panels on top. The desk is approximately 54" wide. 28" deep and 30" tall. It has 8 drawers. The bottom right drawer is a deep file drawer. The desk is in very good antique/used condition. At the front of the desk it may have been repaired at one time. There are two pieces of wood, one is 3" by 1" and the other one is 2" by 1" that appear to have been inlaid(not initially apparent or significant) The leather top has some stain which contributes to the authenticity,age and use of the desk.
