The size of the icon is 9.7 cm. high(without the loop hanger) 9.0 cm. wide, and 1.3 cm. thick. It has an overall weight of 162.0 grams. Front of the icon is decorated with enamel hand painting of the Virgin Mary and red stones. Back side of the icon is decorated with orthodox cross and russian inscription. It was bought in Lesbos island. Greece. The icon is called The Panagia Glykophilousa. Sweet-kissing" or"Loving Kindness" icon depicts the Virgin Mary caressing her Son. So that they appear to be kissing. In the Byzantine representations, the Child caresses her cheek while she appears sad, seemingly contemplating his coming Passion. The representation from the Cretan School of the 17th Century shows very pronounced characteristics of the Virgin Mother. In the early 1900's Christians brought these back from their pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Photos do not do this piece justice! It is in EXCELLENT condition for its age! Here's a unique. Early santo hand, hand carved of hardwood and mounted for display on a marble base. From Peru. Paint is stable. About 3.75" tall and that wide. Sgraffito paint on wrist cuff.
