Adopts Them For His Own. Upon research I have discovered this verse is taken from a poem written by John Henry Newton(1725-1807) who was an English anglican clergyman. It was re-published by William Gadsby(1773-1844) in a hymbook titled"A Selection Of Hymns For Public Worship" Better known as Gadsby Hymns. After consulting an expert. They thought it was most likely english and dates to the 1st half of the 19th century. It appears to be handwoven linen with silk embroidery thread. This piece is filled with beautiful fiqures& designs. Beneath the verse is a center tree with 6 birds perched on branches. 16 flying insects/butterflies. 3 birds in flight with insects in their beaks. A flower& leaf border. Smaller trees, flower filled urns, additional birds, critters, foliage& borders. Needlepointed in colors of browns. Yellow, shades of blue& greens, tan, black& cream. It measures approx. 15" x 15" and includes what I believe to be the original frame with wooden back. There is a backer paper board between the sampler& the back of the frame and it bears the design of the sampler itself. The girl/woman who embroidered this piece was named Mary Corner. Her name is needlepointed in the lower corners. There is no date embroidered. There is discoloration around the border. The fabric itself is very sheer. stiff and light. A little faded and with two holes to the middle left and one to the bottom left. Jarmany seems to be a Norfolk name and several Esther Jarmanys are recorded from this time. Antique American Alphabet Sampler, Lucinda Mitchel, 19th Century, Unframed
I have f or sale and antique. Unframe d small alphabet sampler. I've had this for a few years. It had been folded. You can still see the creases. It has the alphabet o n the first two lines. minus the J and U) and Lucinda Mitchel Her sampler on the next two lines. The next line has numbers 1 through 0. There could be a date there somewhere. But I can't decipher it. It looks like it says 1781, but I know it's not that early. It looks like she put the J and the U down at the bottom of the sampler) My guess is that it's somewhere around 1830-1855. If any one can see a date in the last two lines, I'd be interested to know. This sampler measures between 5 1/2" and 5 3/4" tall and 9 5/8" and 9 1/4" wide. You can see a few small stains. But the blue color is good, and there's a little black as well. The ... morefabric is in good shape, not brittle, and has plenty of give. The bottom could be stretched out a bit to equal the top measurement. If you want to frame it. No holes or missing threads, but you can see that the edges are a little frayed on some spots. This auction is for an antique hand embroidered sampler circa 1st half of the 19th century(1800-1850's) The religious/moral inspirational verse reads: Happy Are They Whom The Lord His Gracious Name Makes Known And By His Spirit And His Word. Adopts Them For His Own. Upon research I have discovered this verse is taken from a poem written by John Henry Newton(1725-1807) who was an English anglican clergyman. It was re-published by William Gadsby(1773-1844) in a hymbook titled"A Selection Of Hymns For Public Worship" Better known as Gadsby Hymns. After consulting an expert. They thought it was most likely english and dates to the 1st half of the 19th century. It appears to be handwoven linen with silk embroidery thread. This piece is filled with beautiful fiqures& designs. Beneath the verse is a center tree with 6 birds perched ... moreon branches. 16 flying insects/butterflies. 3 birds in flight with insects in their beaks. A flower& leaf border. Smaller trees, flower filled urns, additional birds, critters, foliage& borders. Needlepointed in colors of browns. Yellow, shades of blue& greens, tan, black& cream. It measures approx. 15" x 15" and includes what I believe to be the original frame with wooden back. There is a backer paper board between the sampler& the back of the frame and it bears the design of the sampler itself. The girl/woman who embroidered this piece was named Mary Corner. Her name is needlepointed in the lower corners. There is no date embroidered. There is discoloration around the border. The fabric itself is very sheer. stiff and light. For sale an antique sampler dating to 1849 from France. This is a very beautiful and rare sampler. Along with the traditional number and letters we have a bird. Flowers and butterflies. We also have the date 16 Aout(in french) and the name Denny Bocquet 1849. It is all done in cross-stitch with cotton threads. There are about 20 stitches per inch. It is all trimmed with a green ribbon that is a little worn. The sampler has been folded in four so there are fold marks. Some discoloring on the background fabric but not bad. This one dates from 1853 is Scottish and was sewn by a little girl called Jessie Dalgleish in March of that year. That makes it 160 years old! She must have lived in Greenock which is near to Glasgow. I had it re-framed in the 90’s. It is a nice woollen example and the colours are still bright as can be seen in the photographs. A delightful unframed antique Georgian sampler. Beautifully worked by Elizabeth Snook in fine silks on linen. The bands of pattern and pretty pastel colours indicate a date of around 1800, perhaps earlier. Snook is an unusual and rare surname, found in the West Country, most likely Dorset, where there are several recorded births for girls named Elizabeth Snook in the 1700s. Antique embroidered Pennsylvania sampler wrought by Jane Sno.. unfinished 1800's
This sampler came from an antique shop in Wellsboro. Pennsylvania. The dealer told me she got it from a local estate. She estimated the age as mid 1800's. I mounted it on unbleached(acid-free) muslim and had it framed. It has been displayed out of direct sunlight for 25+ years. Whomever Jane Sno. was. She did not complete the border or her name. There is no evidence she started the picture. Some of the natural dyes used have faded and perhaps led to one of the rows of embroidery to fall apart. Based on her spacing, I am guessing this would have been a first sampler. What happened to Jane? Did she die young or just get bored and do something else? It is a mystery that will never be answered. I am downsizing and would like Jane's simple sampler to go to a new home that will appreciate her work. Major clear out of my studio, it is now filling up fast with new auction finds. The new year began well– I was offered the fabulous contents of a Victorian linen cupboard and a family collection of lace from a local estate. I also acquired lots of new stock from two wonderful antique textile auctions- one in SW England and another in Yorkshire. I am continuing to list these items as soon as I have laundered and inspected them– lace, shawls, Edwardian and Victorian costume, a collection of buttons etc. Happy browsing! This is a rare and unusual sampler. Embroidered in Chunnakam(a small town on the northernmost tip of Jaffna province, Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon) Probably executed by a ... morepupil at the local Convent or Missionary School at the end of the 19th, or early 20th century) Many nuns left Europe to set up convents, missionary school and orphanages in Southern Asia around 1880- I have a large collection of lace listed this week, made by pupils of an orphanage in S. India- this convent was run by Belgian nuns, schooled in the art of lace making. As this sampler has a French, or German feel to it, I imagine the little girl who embroidered this was taught by nuns from somewhere in Northern Europe. It is very pretty- unusual motifs of elephants, stylised palm trees and birds, as well as the more common border patterns, numbers and letters. The sampler is in excellent condition- worked on what appears to be a fine wool, or wool and linen mix. I can find just a few tiny stitches missing. There are also a few small rust spots, but these are all located outside the main field. The sampler measures 39cm x 70cm. The middle section has not been stitched- perhaps a work in progress? Antique Sampler Crazy Quilt - dated and signed 1890
This is a Sampler CRAZY QUILT that has been signed and dated by many different ladies. The quilt displays their workmanship and embroidery skills. Entirely HAND MADE. There are multiple choices of embroidery holding the pieces together- its not just one stitch style. Please look at the edges of the pieces. There are a variety of fabrics used also- silk. Velvet etc. I've included pictures of some to the pieces where the fabric is fraying- probably more from the choice of material than through usage. Very talented needlework. There is a Victorian girl holding a wooden bucket, a Victorian boy blowing bubbles, a child wearing a bonnet, a boy fishing, flowers, water lily, wreaths, acorn& leaves, lace up boots, a crown, Parasol, heart with an arrow through it, a wheelbarrow, pitcher& basin, plus animals such as a mouse, a dove, monkey, ... morefox, dog, owl. There are names- Pollie, Flora- and many initials. The quilt was stated to have come from the estate of Marg Hutchison and came to my wife via an eBay purchase in November 2003 from South Western Canada. The back of the quilt is an antique paisley material. There is some minor bleeding on a few pieces. An extraordinary hand embroidered map of Europe. Dated 1800, stitched by Mary Horton. The silk is backed with calico, and the silk thread embroidered though both layers, so this is in good condition ... morefor its age, with a little water staining to the top right, and some fading to the bottom left hand side. This was so hard to photograph! It measures 68cm x 57cm. and there is an edging of about 1,5cm where it was once folded over a stiff backing for framing. No damage to the silk that I can spot- one tiny tear outside the main field. A really interesting early embroidered silk map! More photographs below. ANTIQUE RARE CROCHET SAMPLER BOOK by GIRL IN CLOSTER, NJ, 1888
This is a sampler book of crochet patterns produced by Elizabeth Gruben Clark from Closter. NJ. She crocheted these samples when she was 14 years old dating it to 1888 since she was born in 1874 in Closter. As a young girl, she took crocheting and dressmaking lessons from a woman named Mrs. O'Donnell. The book contains 46 samples sewn into a composition book and comes with old newspaper clippings of advertisements for other patterns. Also included are two newspaper articles with photographs of Lizzie(nee Gruben) Clark during the anniversary of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Closter. That church was organized in 1887 and was built by her late husband, William Clark. I have the original confirmation certificate from that church for her. This is from a pet and smoke free house and is in very good condition considering the age.

Early 19c Antique MIDDLESEX Co SAMPLER Names GROTON, Philena GILSON Age12
Early 19th Century Sampler by Philena Gilson Names Town of Groton Search Prev Stop Play Next PLEASE SUPER SIZE PHOTOS FOR CONDITION AND BEST VIEWS A very pretty early 19th century New England marking sampler completed by 12 year old Philena Gilson who names her town of Groton(Middlesex. MA) The sampler dates to either circa 1819 or circa 1833 as there were two young girls named Philena/Philenia Gilson in the same Groton Massachusetts family(separated by a generation) who could have stitched the sampler. The Gilson family had been long established in Groton; Joseph Gilson(1636-1676) was one of the original proprietors of this Middlesex County town. Both Philena Gilsons were direct descendants(see additional information below) A file of genealogical research will accompany the sampler. The sampler is a nice small size measuring about 7.25" ... morex 11.75" with a total framed size ~11.5" x 16" The needlework is housed behind glass in an early"Hogarth" frame with inner hardwood frame/liner. The teal blue lettering is quite vivid; the sampler displays beautifully. Very finely worked with extensive use of the difficult eyelet stitch. The sampler is stitched in the more unusual horizontal format and is bordered with drawnwork on all four sides. The simple design is quite graphic and well composed with a total of five lines: 1) small lower case alphabet and number series, 2-4) large upper case A through X with diamond pattern at end- completely worked in eyelet stitch, and(5) signature line"Philena Gilson Groton AE 12" with snowflake type designs before and after the signature. Although an older label on the back indicates that the work is Quaker and the sampler has elements that are similar to known Quaker samplers(particularly the style of the lower case alphabet) I can find no evidence that the Gilson family were Quaker. ANTIQUE GEORGIAN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER BY JANE JENKINS 1825 Measurement: 16 x 12 1/2 inches An early needlework sampler which has been very finely worked in exquisite tiny stitches by Jane Jenkins in 1825. It is worked in coloured silks on a very fine linen ground with a verse and lots of flower motifs. Birds, stags, a crown and a strawberry border. Unfortunately it has a fair amount of damage and I have supplied many photos below to show this. There has been a linen border attached which is coming away from the edge. The actual edge of the sampler is damaged as shown. There are some holes and a split on the left hand side(shown below) The colours are faded. I discovered the entire design is hand painted– the scene appears to be a woman in the garden. As shown in one of the photos this is from the School of Art Needlework in Baltimore, MD and was likely done by one of the students– the painting was done on silk. This measures 10” x 13 ⅝” and, although not shown, does have a glass front. The Photos also show there are some water stains as well as a tear in the silk which is difficult to see when flat or under the glass. I have not seen many like this. Two chairs and a hutch. It's all a wonderful folk art style with green paint. We think the paint is original and don't see any signs of other colors. It appears to be made from pine as you can see on the back of the hutch. The hutch is a step back cupboard and has two doors up above, two little drawers down below, and two doors below that. The upper doors have glass and one side's glass is missing. The stepback has neat old hardware that was painted over. The table is a simple cross base table with two little chairs. The entire set is old but we don't know how old. You make the call on whether you'd call this Antique, ... morePrimitive, or Vintage. We don't know but it looks antique to us. The top of the table has a crack in it and some residue from tape or something. The entire set has nicks, dings, chips and scrapes. There are also some worm holes on and under the pieces. It's got that character that we just love! We think it's adorable! The cabinet is 13.25" W x 5.5" D x 17" H and weighs 5 lbs. The drawers are not dovetailed as you can see in the last picture. Antique Sampler– Dated 1672 Dimensions: 20cm x 49cm Dimensions of Frame: 34 x 66cm- the frame is faux burr style Sewn in two colours– green and orange. With horizontal panels of flowers. Figures, text and lace work to base. The animals include deers, frogs, rabbits, snakes, birds and humans. The bottom section also has lace work. It was sewn by someone called Ioanna Walton and dated 1672 I think it may be quite rare. I have never seen anything like this, selling as down-sizing my life! Am guessing that she did this perhaps as a young woman(maybe in the late 1800's early 1900's but do not know for sure. It may have been done by her mother as she had many things in the trunk from her parents as well. Appears to be in good condition given its age with some discoloring at the ends of the threads on the trim. It is square and measures approximately 12.5X12.5 inches. C1823 New England Antique Needlework Sampler Jane Church Age 10 Ashfield Mass
This is a C1823 New England Antique Needlework Sampler by Jane Church Age 10. On the Family Search website. There is a Jane Church that was born about 1813 in Ashfield Massachusetts. I purchased this sampler locally here in Franklin County in Western Massachusetts and Ashfield is also located in Franklin County. So I feel confident that this sampler may have belonged to her and is definitelylocal to me. Since she identified her age, this sampler probably was done about 1823. The sampler is in excellent condition and was stored very carefully out of the light and was never framed. It measures 8 1/2" x 8" and includes upper and lower case alphabet done in silks along with a cartouche with her name and age. On each side of the cartouche are a stylized bird, florals and what appears to be two dogs. The sampler is in pristine condition ... moredone in hand spun and handwoven linen and silk thread with only a tiny tan spot just below the lower case f. The naturally dyed silk colors are still strong and include white, pink, light green olive green, and black. There is no damage. Three of the edges were hemstitched and the fourth(bottom) is selvage. Apparently it was just folded in a drawer all these years. Also according to Family Search, Jane Church died about 1880. There is no date.
