Over 100 years old! These cloth books were popular in the late 1800s to the early 1900s. It has over 90 samples of different laces and stitches and is in very good condition but soiled from 100 years of storage. Research shows that these books were made by young girls in convents learning the skills of making lace and needlework. School girls learned the necessary needlework skills of the time along with women who would do needlework for others not skilled in this art. This wonderful antique sampler with delightful strawberry border is in very good condition for its age and features a very unusual motto of“This Cottage Is My Own” Quite a claim for a 13 year old girl in 1838! Fine details include the“cottage” itself. A two story large home with side wing and transom lights over the front door, 5 charming birds perched on the chimneys and roof, an interesting brick building either observatory or perhaps a summer kitchen type out building to the rear, a brick sidewalk, a sheep and several dogs in the foreground, 2 different type trees flanking the house with birds atop each, multiple baskets and urns of flowers. A person carrying something towards the house, and the signature of Ann Bramer, aged 13 years 1838. This was professionally framed many years ago and just purchased from a private collection being ... moredisbursed. Ready to hang. Condition is quite good with slight overall darkening. A few edge nail holes along the top where it was removed from a wooden backing sometime previously, a few dropped stitches noticeable only upon very close inspection, and a very fine linen(I’m presuming) ground. Stitchwork appears to be silk and a fine wool. The border along the top appears to be interrupted to let the birds’ heads pop through. Tapestry wool, and felt applique-work on natural linen. Measures 33 x 24½ centimetres I think it's the original frame as it's clearly very old! Annie went on to become a successful Arts& Crafts artist in the Midlands. Beautiful English Samper dated December 23. 1800. The name on this very detailed sampler is Mary Harvey. Very elaborate boarder with the alphabet, numbers, a verse as well as baskets of flowers, and birds. The stitches are predominately green with brown, burgundy and gold. The actual size of the sampler is 10 1/2" x 11" the overall frame size is 12" x 11 1/2" This is the original frame. The sampler was taken out and mounted on acid free board to preserve it, UV glass also protects the sampler from the environment. This sampler has a lot going for it and would make a lovely addition to your collection or on its own. A samplers is a wonderful alternative to a painting hanging above a dresser or entry way.

A delightful miniature sampler probably produced as a gift with a central brightly coloured basket of fruit with two large hearts at the bottom and a pair of crowns in the top corners. The style and backing linen would suggest mid Victorian. Circa 1870 in date. Worked in coloured wool. Framed not by me but possibly quite recently measures only 13 x 12 cm 5 x 4 3/4 inches. Condition it has not been examined out of the frame but looks fine no stitch loss or colour run no holes.

Antique framed American sampler/ABCs/possibly dated 1781
This is an early sampler. Fresh from a Hingham, Mass estate. I believe it is American and according to a pencil note on the back, may date from 1781. The"781" appears at the very end of the second to last row. This is a wonderful understated and simple sampler- ABCs and numbers. Colors look to be black, green and blue. It is framed- probably done in the 1980s. It carries a label from the Schnabel Galleries in Hingham, Ma- to my knowledge, they are no longer in business. I have not removed this from the frame. Size framed is about 9&1/2" by 7. Sight size is about 8&1/2" by 6. Condition is as found and as shown. Fabric looks to be in very good condition- some fading to the colors as expected. Overall, this is a great sampler- simple, graphic and if the date is right, early! I will be loading another sampler as well ... moreas a theorem from the same estate. Thanks for looking!

Antique Cross Stitch Sampler Of The Ships That Founded Jamestown Virginia 1607
My antique dealer dates this sampler to circa 1920. It is a cross stitch design of the three sailing ships that landed at Jamestown. Virginia in 1607. Susan Constant, captained by Christopher Newport, was the largest of three ships of the English Virginia Company(the others being the Discovery and the Godspeed) on the 1606-1607 voyage that resulted in the founding of Jamestown in the new Colony of Virginia. Wikipedia) The sampler is titled"Birthplace Of America" and has a sign"Jamestown Virginia 1607" The hand work was done on a natural linen looking fabric. There are many more types of stitching that the cross stitch, but I do not know their names. The sewing is meticulous and very neatly done. I love the little birds flying over the ships. This measures 10" X 7 3/4" in it's wood frame and weighs 1 pound ... more14.2 ounces. My friend purchased this in an antique store near Carmel. Indiana over a decade ago. The sampler is in excellent condition with no flaws that I can find. Just a few wrinkles. The frame has had some damage from tape and needs a bit of restoration. Antique Paper Punch Motto Sampler in Carved Leaf Frame from 1880 v This listing is for an antique paper punch sampler. The sampler features the motto“Do Right and Fear Not” The motto is done in red thread. Around the motto it is embellished with stitching in gold and a blue/ green color. v I do not know the history of the piece except that it was found in my Mother’s attic after she passed away and I had never seen it before. It appears to have the original glass. Rough wood original backing, and has a wire in place for hanging. The back needs some more nails or staples to tighten the piece into the frame but I did not want to do that myself and thought I would let the new owner do it to suit themselves. v The overall condition of the piece is good for something 133 years old. The background paper is in amazingly good condition with no visible ... moretears. There is some thread damage on the motto and some separation in the corners of the frame. v The initials“L.D” are stitched in the lower left corner. I have“Deal” ancestors so I think it must have been done by someone with the last name Deal. v In the lower right corner the date“Feb. 1. 1880” is stitched. The"st" for first is stitched above the one(I guess the crafter forgot and added it after the date was done) v The sampler is framed in an antique carved wood leaf decorated frame with a gold wood liner. Other than the separating in the corners the frame is in great condition. v The overall measurement from the outside points is approximately 13 ¾ high x 26 ¼ inches wide/ the inside measurement is approximately 8 ¼ high x 20 ½ inches wide. v Overall I would ask that you use the pictures to judge the condition of the piece. The sampler is unusual in that the design is a sampler embroidered in black surrounded by an outer sampler"frame" embroidered in gold-coloured silk. The black section has alphabets. Numbers and a prayer and the gold area framing this has leafy tendrils, religious verse and the name and date. It is loose. With no wooden frame, and measures 12 by 10.5 inches(30.5 by 25.5 cm. Very rare early piece. LARGE needlepoint sampler measuring 23 X 23. Very unusual! Read all the details. Beautiful condition. Bears the early Louisiana State Seal from 1892. From the F. Van Kerkvoorde sugar plantation. Very Beautifully detailed. Mother Pelican tears at her own flesh to feed her babies. The seal was changed in 1902 to depict 3 babies. This piece shows 4 babies and is correct for the year depicted. The wording is written is Dutch. Pietas(meaning Compassion) Zelfsopoffering. Last line reads Burcht 30 1892 F. V. Kerkvoorde Burcht means castle. There is also a sticker on back of the frame reading FOTO LUC Melis Stokelaan 7 2050 Antwerpen L.O. 219.12,24. I am assuming this is where it was framed. Antwerpen is a village in the Flemish Province of Belgium. I had added pics of an article that was in the Lousiana Planter which was a ... morenewspaper back in the 1890s. ANTIQUE INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL SAMPLER - ELIZABETH COLLIER 1871 - 10TH ROYAL HUSSARS
An interesting antique unframed sampler embroidered with the Lord's Prayer by Elizabeth Collier aged 12 in 1871 at an Industrial School or reformatory. These institutions were opened in the mid-19th century. Often by the Church, for"waifs& strays" They were intended to help children who were destitute but had not yet committed a serious crime. Their purpose was to remove the child from bad influences and give her an education and trade. I have found an Elizabeth Collier aged 12 in the workhouse in Bridport. Dorset on the 1871 census, with her mother and sister. There was an industrial school on King Street in Bridport at that time which she probably attended and this may well be her sampler. There is also an unusual reference to the 10th Royal Hussars on the sampler which could mean that her father was a soldier in this ... moreregiment. The sampler is in fairly good condition with some wear(see photo) There is also a little gum residue on the edges. It is backed with glazed cotton and measures 13.75 by 9 inches(35 by 25.5 cm. A charming. Simple unframed antique redwork School Standard V sampler embroidered by Emma Pipe in 1879. Emma attended Dennington School in Suffolk and worked the sampler with alphabets, numbers and a Bible quotation. The sampler is in good condition with no missing stitches. Just a few faint age marks. Another unique item from Indelible Curiosities Antique 1865 Framed Sampler Mary Rand 13 Springfield MA Hubbard Kingsley History Description: Nicely sized antique framed in wood sampler using the cross stitch with the alphabet in upper case letters. Numbers 0-10(9& 10 bottom right corner) the sampler creator's name, and her age, 13, at the time. We believe, based on Mary's age at the time of her death as written in the note, she created this sampler in 1865, the same year the civil war ended, and that her birthdate was January 31, 1852. This is a great sweet sampler in overall good condition for being just under 150 years old. Wonderful light and dark teal thread was used for the upper part of the sampler while a gentle rust(orange-red) thread finishes off the remainder of the design. As can be seen in the photographs. The finished ... moreedges are not frayed or worn and the entire piece has been maintained with this framing; however, there are two areas where parts of the letters are missing. The lower right of the 8 and the vertical line for the"d" in Mary's last name are missing. Size including frame: 9 3/16" w x 6 11/16" h Sampler(can be seen in its entirety still framed) 8 1/8" h x 5 5/8" w On the back of the frame written on the paper covering is the following: Given to Mrs. Wilson W. Marshman from Aunt Francis. Done by Mary Rand- a friend of Grandma Kingsley. an old maid) who had no family and was buried in the Hubbard Lots in Pine Hill Cemetery in Spfid[Springfield] where great grandma and father Hubbard, Gr& Gr Kingsley, Aunt Kate and Aunt Frances are buried. Mary Rand- died January 20. 1899 46 years. 11 mos, 19 days" We thought it would make this piece even more special if we could add to the history written on the back. It took quite a bit of searching- thank goodness for the Internet- but we found Mary Rand(or. This is an excellent c1840 American red stained primitive frame. Beautiful original dry. Red surface with nice patina and minor wear. Slightly canted molding with flat top outer edge. Mitered and lap joined corners with square nail construction and an early tin hanger. Frame measures 15 3/8 x 17 7/8 with a 13 3/8 x 15 7/8 rabbet. Found in central Pa. Beautiful punched paper sampler with God Bless Our Home. It is in good condition. Very bright colors. No rips or tears in the paper. No loss of yarn from moths, the stitching is complete and all present. It is very well done nice tight complete stitches. The house stitching is very well done, even the roof has a nice textured thatched roof loof. The flowers are down in the walkways and gardens. Very good attention to detail, worth having the water stains taken away. It measures 22 inches by 17 inches. Has water staining in top left corner around the G, as well as top right side near the E in Home and some down in both lower corners. A young Quaker girl of only ten or eleven years, stitched her lovely sampler in 1811 and, in an unusual addition, included family initials AND the names of both maternal and paternal grandparents: Mary and Thomas Cheyney and Hannah and Richard Jones. Ella's sampler is well composed and balanced with several alphabets worked in black and extensivc use of borders stitched predominantly in green; i.e. A four-sided sawtooth outer border, two horizontal sawtooth borders that enclose her lower case"Quaker alphabet" a decorative border between her alphabets and her family& signature ... moreinformation, and a double sawtooth border between the family information and her signature line. Ella also stitched several small wreath, floral and geometric motifs that accent the bottom of the sampler. Framed the sampler measures about 16.25" x 16.5" the sight size measures about 12.25" x 12.5" ELLA MARIA CHEYNEY(1800-1873) was born in 1800 in Thornbury Twp to parents Elizabeth(Jones) and William Farmer Cheyney. She married William Ellis Haines(1796-1880) in 1821 and the couple had fourteen children between 1822 and 1845! She died in West Grove. Chester Co. in 1873 and was buried in the Kemblesville Cemetery(where her husband was later laid to rest) An excerpt from a family history gives some interesting details and reads: Her husband) was a lifetime farmer in Chester County. Was devoted to Quaker principles and was known to vote Republican. He was recorded as being of 5'11" height, 155 lbs weight, with blue eyes and brown hair and light complexion. c1820 Early AMERICAN DRY BLACK Pa Folk Primitive FRAKTUR SAMPLER Antique Frame
This is an excellent very early American black painted primitive frame. Hard to date these early styles but my best guess would be late 18th century up until through the first quarter of the 19th century. Earlier than the standard canted molding styles of the currier and ives frames.and similar to the c1800 simple miniature black frames. Beautiful original dry. Crusty black surface with nice patina and minor wear. Flat molding with narrow. Channeled cushion(convex) molded site liner. Pinned corners(typical of Pa construction) with solid lap joints and original hanging loop. Frame measures 14 1/8 x 18 1/8 with an 11 7/8 x 16 rabbet. Found in central Pa. A quality. I have found a great supplier to make me some custom frames for my motto samplers. We are no longer selling hand carved frames as my husband wanted to retire. This is a beautiful stitched and framed motto. It is new. The frame has a soft black finish with raised scrollwork along the edge and a fine rabbit bead along the inner edge by the motto. It is 1" deep and 1-1/4" deep. I removed the glass to photograph. It comes with double strength glass, backing and wire hanger. Back side is unstained. The Motto is The Lord will Provide. One of my motto kits that I stitched. It is stitched in a deep burgundy/cranberry with dark pink variegation, overdyed floss(my own) ecru lily of the valley for that antique look and gorgeous variegated green with a hint of brown in parts of the green. It is stitched on high quality perforated paper, just ... morelike the ones stitched in the 1800's. The nice part about the new ones is that there is no staining on the paper and no missing threads. MARY C LANGLEY Aged 12 1820. ANTIQUE SILK NEEDDLEWORK SAMPLER GEORGE III
A very finely worked early 19th Century silk sampler. Depicting a number of spot motifs including wonderful vases of flowers and baskets of fruit. Across the bottom on a lawn of long satin stitch we have two spotty dogs and a pair of stags flanking a central apple tree with a robin amongst the branches. A border pattern of repeated coloured fleur-de lys like flowers are linked by a green stitched line. At the top within an oval panel we have the sewers details MARY C LANGLEY May the second 1820. Aged 12 years. Framed some time ago in a period like hogarth frame by Gough bros of Bognor Regis( may help identify the sewer. Size of frame 35 x 36 cm. Condition. I think could be reframed. Great colour but there are a number of areas of damage around the name panel, near the stags at the bottom around the large flower group on the right and small ... morerose on the left. numerous small holes some over stitching around the edge may be just stitched to backing cloth.

Very Unusual Early Antique Young Girl's Embroidered Practice Sampler or"PRIMER" D ESCRIPTION: Scans show it all.Original antique young girl's sampler. Done about 1820 based on the homespun material and the look of the letters. I got this in the same estate sale as one recently sold on ebay done by(and named to) Judith Ann Cutler, born July 10, 1817. The Cutler sampler was dated 1827, so is consistent with the appearance of this one. If not done by Judith, may have been done by one of her sisters? This appears to have FOUR complete alphabets. Then. Other individual practice letters, some underlining work, and even a 4" long piece of embroidered border. Letters/alphbets are done in several colors, like she was trying to decide which looked best. I believe this was her first"practice" sampler. I have seen small ... moresimple samplers done for this purpose, typically called primers, but not one like this. So. A very early, very unusual framed sampler, 7" x 12" 9" x 14" with the frame. Hemmed on all sides. Has very little wear and shows its age well. Not too bad considering it is almost 200 years old! A nice early framed example, for your collection or to hang on the wall, without having to spend an arm and a leg. This has a reasonable starting price with no reserve. Excellent condition overall, and can go right up on the wall when it comes out of the shipping box. THIS IS DONE ON HOMESPUN LINEN. Which was probably handmade and spun from flax by her mother. Cloth is absolutely perfect, with no defects. Condition is excellent. Embroidery is also excellent, with only the usual minor fading of some of the early pigments. OVER 185 YEARS OLD! A nice early. Antique German bobbin lace pillow with stand pattern and sampler for display
Rare antique bobbin lace pillow complete with stand. Pattern(with a few printed instructions in German language) and a small sampler plus pins. It needs a good cleaning because of the lots of dust, but I think you should do this by yourself because now it is still in original shape. When it is cleaned, it will be very nice for display, a lovely collectors piece perhaps in museum quality. 5 of the 23 bobbins have lost their cover, but it should be easy to replace them. Although you can not see this on the photos, except for one single bobbin all the other bobbins are connected to the lace sampler. So the sampler is still complete and you could sit down and finish the lace now, if you want to. Hi. You are bidding on a lovely little antique sampler made by Minnie Coton age 15 over 100 years ago. The size is a seven and a half inch square. The frame. A nice one with a few dings but original to this sampler, measures about fifteen inches by seventeen inches and is two and a half inches deep. The sampler says A few more years shall roll, a few more seasons dcome And we shall be at rest with those that sleep within the tomb. Minnie Coton Aged 15. I don't know why these samplers sometimes had these morbit messages, but there you have it. The sampler has some issues. Some of the red stitches are missing, and there is a small hole. It is also old looking. However I think it is beautiful with a lovely message albeit morbid and it looks great in the frame. There is more information that came in a little card with the sampler. THIS IS A RARE AND EARLY NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER THAT WE BELIEVE DATES FROM THE LATE 18th CENTURY DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE LETTER"F" WAS USED IN THE PLACE OF"S" AS IN THE WORD MISLED SPELLLED MIFLED IN THIS SAMPLER. THE SAMPLER CONTAINS A VERSE AND A SQUARE THAT READS"ANN KINSEY'S SAMPLER PERFORMED IN THE 13th YEAR OF HER LIFE" IT ALSO HAS THE INITIALS SK RK EK AND TWO GROUPED TOGETHER MK EEK. THERE IS VARIOUS POTTED PLANTS-PEARS. STRAWBERRIES, FLOWERS AND TWO BIRDS. THE OUTER EDGE HAS SILK RIBBON WITH ROSETTES IN THE CORNERS. THE SAMPLER IS IN A PERIOD HAND MADE WOOD FRAME WITH FINE MORTISE AND TENON CONSTRUCTION. IT HAS NEVER BEEN OPENED WITH ORIGINAL CUT NAILS. THE FRAME HAS IT'S ORIGINAL FINISH AND OLD WAVY GLASS.
