Large 4.7" Venice Megalodon Fossil Shark Tooth teeth
This exquisite Megalodon tooth was recovered from the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico near Venice. Florida. This fossil is razor sharp with a perfect root, glossy silver enamel, an outstanding black bourlette and a killer tip. There is also a very interesting scar on the enamel that was left by the shark as it bit its own tooth during predation. This 10 million year old fossil has no repair or restoration. Republic of Venice. Doge Antonio Venier, 21 October 1382- 23 November 1400 The Chalkis Hoard of 4806 torneselli was found in Greece about 1980. Cataloged by Alan M. Stahl, and published in'The Venetian Tornesello, a Medieval Colonial Coinage' NNM No. 163, ANS, NY, 1985) Initially it was believed the hoard had been found near Arta, the capital of medieval Epirus. Subsequent investigation indicated the hoard was more likely found in the Chalkis area of Negroponte and was probably lost when Negroponte fell to the Turks in 1470. The dealer John Aiello donated 82 coins of 59 different types from the hoard to the ANS. One thousand of the Chalikis Hoard coins are in the Numismatic Collection of the Smithsonian Institution. The remaining coins were disbursed commercially, chiefly by the dealer Alex G. IL in operation from the 1920's to the 1950's. The chips have been lightly cleaned with a damp cloth to remove surface dirt and dust but they could be better cleaned by their new owner. I am including a link to The Chip Board for documentation on the $1.00 chips marked"JPC" which shows a copy of the chip order for this club from the manufacturer the Taylor&Co. Unfortunately documentation may not exist for the chip marked"H.P.C. $10.00" with the small key style of rim mold or the chip marked"HPC" with the 3 dot or Tri-ball rim mold. The Black $10.00 chip was made by the B.C. Wills& Co. and there are not ... moreany order records available for this company. Likewise the orange chip marked"HPC" was made by the Joe Treyball Sporting Goods Co in St. Louis. MO They produced this chip from 1929-1939 and records are not available for this manufacturer either. The JPC chips were originally misidentified as being from Jay's Playmor Club in Cheyenne. WY. After much research and with the help of sites such as thechipboard I am confident of the identity of these chips. Just a brief account of how I acquired these chips: In 2002 I purchased a house in southwest Missouri. The previous owners were eldery. In their late 80's, and moving into a smaller residence. Due to the reduced size of their new home they sold many, many of their belongings to us when we purchased the house. When they moved they also left many boxes of misc items which they did not want to take with them. Included in these items were a large number of chips, dice and cards. This couple had lived and worked for decades in the St. Louis area and apparently the husband was a avid gambler. Old 44”x32” GESSO GILT FRAME Red Bole w/ Venice Canal Oil Painting on Canvas
This impressively large frame would make quite a statement amongst many decors. Measuring 44 1/2” by 32 1/4” overall. The interior portion’s dimensions are 35 3/8” by 23 1/2” The scooped frame is about 2 1/2” deep. Scrolls, geometric fan shapes, English hobnail pattern and leaves comprise a majority of the gesso ornamentation. The gold gilt appears to have been laid over a red bole base coat, as burgundy hues are visible on some of the raised areas. The years have aged the gold finish to a warm patina and I have not cleaned the frame, as some prefer that look. Stamped on the back of the canvas, and along one side is“34354M60” Despite my research, I am unable to attribute this number to any production company. With regards to condition. The decorative elements in the frame’s corners have some cracking, which I’ve shown in close-up photos. This is a common aging occurrence due to the contraction of the wood, bole base coat, and gesso. There are also a few hairline cracks in some of the adjoining sculpted areas. Another photo shows the upper right corner which is missing some of the decoration. It was touched up some time ago, and the gold has aged well with the corner design. The frame is tight and appears sound, free of cracks or loose joints. The painting is in fine condition and shows no signs of wear. Quite a striking piece.
