Often known as a ... morefamily bible at the time. We're not sure when this was published, who the publisher was or what year as it is missing the early pages with that information. We do see reference to the Catholic Bible History. This one has a small group of engraved pages or plates as shown. This makes us think this is from the 1860 to 1880 period as later ones seem to have had color pages in addition to engraving plates. This one is about 10.5 by 12.5 inches in face dimension and about 4 inches thick. It weighs over 10 lbs. Here is a list of the details we noted. 1) The cover overall is very good. 2) There are supposed to be two metal latches for securing the bible closed.one is present and one is missing. 3) The bound pages are unglued from the cover as we show in a picture. 4) We found one page loose from the binding within the bound group. 5) The bible part of this seems to be full and complete. 6) The first group of pages that include the title page through page 50 of the"History of the Catholic Bible" are missing. 7) There are woodcut style page engravings of good number within the pages of the history section. 8) There is a"family" blank page that is blank and there are no family photos on the pages at the back provided for that use. 9) Binding seems to be holding most of the pages well. 10) Slight age darkening to pages. A little spotting at the edges, overall GD+ or better. show marking from wear and handling though is decent. So overall rating is rough. Though nice leather contoured cover. That's about it. The pictures should be helpful to those having interest. We'll start this old or antique family bible low so enjoy the auction. When packed this will weigh about 12.5 lbs so we'll use USPS Media Mail as the lowest cost postal alternative to the buyer. We have no packing or handling charge. This is the first German-American Bible printed outside of Philadelphia, and the first Bible printed in Reading. A significant edition, both in size and scope, this marked the spread of German printers and the more local production of bibles in the Pennsylvania-Dutch back country. A solid copy, bound in original leather binding over thick and heavy boards, in decent shape, both original clasps are gone, moderate wear to edges of leather, arear board nearly detached with only a cord holding it on. Large raised bands to spine, some wear to spine with light loss, but label visible. Unique antique PA German design. 1887 Holman Family Holy Bible W Concordance Leather Hand Tooled Gold Leaf
This original 1887 Holman Holy Bible with Concordance is very large with hand a hand tooled cover on both sides and binding. It is 10 x 12 1/2 x 3 1/2" thick with gold leaf on all 3 edges. The whole cover and binding are beautiful. The first section before the bible is a dictionary with contents of 150 pages full of beautiful engravings. Some in color with gold leaf embellishments. The engr4avings continue through the parallel pages of the bible. Many are full-page. The family section of the bible is all in gold leaf and engravings and the marriages. Births, and deaths have not been filled out. The binding is very tight and a few pages have slight browning and foxing. Shipping weight is 12 pounds and it will be mailed in a medium flat rate box very carefully packed.

Fairfield Co. CT. The three pages(sides) Births, Marriages and Deaths are still held together, but precariously so. I have scanned the first page. The second page has 6 marriages. The death page has 9 deaths and a couple of notations of where the brides lived. Measures approx 8.5 x 5.5 I did find the death notice for Asher in the Bridgeport CT paper for 1811. Curiously there is a note right under Asher's death that says Eunice MORRIS. see scan) In doing a little research I thought that Asher's Grandmother might be Eunice. But she was long dead, so I am not sure what that means The History of Danbury says that Shadrach MORRIS born 1746 NH ... moredied 1831 married Rachel GREGORY. At least two sons. Asher. Huge Antique 1800s Leather Family Bible, Engravings, Rough
Here's another interesting antique item from the mid to late 1800's. This is a very large leather bound edition of the bible. Often known as a family bible at the time. We're not sure when this was published, who the publisher was or what year as it is missing the early pages with that information. We do see reference to the Catholic Bible History. This one has a small group of engraved pages or plates as shown. This makes us think this is from the 1860 to 1880 period as later ones seem to have had color pages in addition to engraving plates. This one is about 10.5 by 12.5 inches in face dimension and about 4 inches thick. It weighs over 10 lbs. Here is a list of the details we noted. 1) The cover overall is very good. 2) There are supposed to be two metal latches for securing the bible closed.one is present and one is missing. ... more3) The bound pages are unglued from the cover as we show in a picture. 4) We found one page loose from the binding within the bound group. 5) The bible part of this seems to be full and complete. 6) The first group of pages that include the title page through page 50 of the"History of the Catholic Bible" are missing. 7) There are woodcut style page engravings of good number within the pages of the history section. 8) There is a"family" blank page that is blank and there are no family photos on the pages at the back provided for that use. 9) Binding seems to be holding most of the pages well. 10) Slight age darkening to pages. A little spotting at the edges, overall GD+ or better. show marking from wear and handling though is decent. So overall rating is rough. Though nice leather contoured cover. That's about it. The pictures should be helpful to those having interest. We'll start this old or antique family bible low so enjoy the auction. This Church of the Brethren meeting house is a little south of East Berlin, PA, just off Route 194. George Baker(1749-1805) was the son of George Baker. Who was one of the original residents of East Berlin. The elder George willed his 285 acres to his three sons, John, George and Daniel on 8/3/1770. Included with the bible are a small collection of newspaper clippings and announcements(marriage, commencment) and misc. affiliated with above family, also in good condition. Sold as is. Normal wear for a book nearly 150 years old! Cover probably shows most of the wear, but still in very good condition. Insides in pretty nice shape. Fully adorned gilt designed central patterned Full-Leather covers and spine with thick and deep embossed designing. Very thick w/gilt edged pages shining. Loaded with tons of both COLOR and BW illustrations, including a TON by GUSTAVE DORE. Both the front and back covers are gently worn with some notable wear to the spine, as shown in the pic(surface rubbing if anything) Front board has detached cleanly. In Period Pencil with ID'D Name. Confederate 15th South Carolina Infantry with Date 1862. Previously Owned by Mary Douglas Wright in period ink dated 1842! The New Testiment Book published in 1835 Edinburg. Measures 4 1/2 Inches up and down by 2 5/8 Inches Across by 3/4 Inches Thick. Great Leather Embossed covers front and back of a Church, but missing spine of book, overall condition is very nice. Carried throughout the Civil War by Confederate Soldier Henry Wright of the 15th South Carolina Infantry which were engaged in many battles including Gettysburg, see history below. The unit was transferred to Robert E Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia(ANV) in July 1862. As part of Lee’s Army, the 15th SC served in James Longstreet’s corps in all of the ANV battles from Second Manassas onward, including Sharpsburg and South Mountain. In November 1862. The 15th South Carolina joined Brigadier General Joseph B. Kershaw’s famous South Carolina brigade where the regiment remained for the rest of the War. As part of Kershaw’s brigade, the 15th SC fought in the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Following the battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, Kershaw’s brigade were sent by General Lee, along with two divisions of Longstreet’s corps, to the Western Army where they fought in the battles of Chicamauga, Knoxville and Bean's Station. In April 1864. The 15th SC and the rest of Kershaw's brigade returned to Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia command and fought in the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbour and the siege of Petersburg. Internally the OT title page is missing. Starting with first page of Genesis. There is 1" deep x 2.5" wide chip to the foot of the Genesis page with some light marginalization along the leading edges of this same page. Very odd occasional odd manuscript hand Eighteenth century sepia inscription- most notably some family births and deaths to the last blank leaf of the OT relating to an 17-18th century family. As shown. One page missing between ch XXIII& XXVI of Genesis(doesn't appear to have ever been bound in on this binding) Tiny chip to bottom left corner of Chap 4 of Exodus. Small chip to leading edge of Chap 25 of Exodus and some marginalization of leading blank edge of the next two leaves. It is not often that a bible of this size and vintage comes along in this nice condition. There is no mention of a printing date but judging from the the leather like cover it is old. The front cover has the Masonic emblem with the Jr. O.U.A.M. embossed. There are no damages to the spine. Nice and tight and all the pages are clean and crisp. No damages, loss of the gold gilded pages. The only flaw is what is noted on Photo No.5, slight loss of the leather on the spine. No writing other than a mention of the owner and when he passed away in 1954. The bible has 1380 pages, plus another 60 plus pages. It weighs slightly over 13 pounds and shipping was calculated at 15 pound and will be well padded and boxed.

this victorian family bible has dozens of detailed illustrations however most are black and white. it is in fair condition with the binding and clasps intact. I cannot verify all the pages are here there is one or two loose pages that are tucked in but otherwise all the pages are still attached he edges of the paper are brittle on some pages and need to be handled with care. it is about 130 years old. the marriage certificate is in color and the lords prayer is as well it has not been written in at all from what i have seen. there are a few tears and cracks on pages, as mentioned before the edges on some pages are brittle and with crack rather than tear. item sells as pictured and as is.

German Finnish and Swedish! This is a true piece of Americana and early history. This Bible served as a door-to-door assistant that was used by salesman to piece together custom Bibles for customers. This comes with multiple choices for content. Covers, numerous sections, photo holders, plates, inclusions, sections& more. it is amazingly filled with unbelievable amount of illustrations- B&W, gold trimmed, color-everything you could expect from these large thickly elaborate bibles of the late 1800s that a customer might want, including many Dore plates- some of which are HAND COLORED(VERY rare to find! There are also some random advertisement pages and sheets ... morethroughout describing various editions and highlights offered by the publisher, as well as additional sections in German, Swedish and Finnish. Again. MANY GUSTAVE DORE plates are present in a rare HAND COLORED state, as well as many additional color plates throughout! A rare multi-language version from the late 1890s which is growing quite scarce in the market. This sample is a well used specimen that contains all the necessary examples when the salesman needed them for influence on his customers. And has in turn suffered the requisite damage from so many references. The covers are the original binding, although one board has for the most part detached. The interior binding is intact, with all pages attached, although with some edgewear, soiling, staining, a few small child's scribbles, chips, larger and smaller tears, etc, as shown. 3 spine examples present, as well as the front and rear cover choices, undoubtedly issued in this manner.
