In the heady years after Gutenberg launched his moveable-type system of printing in the mid-1400s. Publishers might have seemed pretty reckless turning out Bibles in their native tongue considering the stance of the Catholic Church(and its Inquisition) on such matters. In the field of maps, however, they showed more caution, limiting themselves to sketching out the ideas put forward by Claudius Ptolemy of Alexandria in the second century AD, and handed down, via Arabic translations, to scholars in medieval Europe. These maps have a decidedly unconvincing appearance, despite the latitude and longitude framework on which they are laid out. They were certainly ignored by anyone setting out on serious travelling- Colombus, Vasco da Gama, Alburquerque, for instance- who used their own private, zealously-guarded. secret charts. Copies of Ptolemy's"Geographia" ... morewere probably snapped up by scholars and book-worms, who savoured the felicities of logic, theory and arm-chair travel more than getting their boots wet and muddy in the world outside. Numerous editions of Ptolemy's maps were brought out in Italy and Germany throughout the 16th century. Italy leading the way with a copper-engraved atlas coming out in Bologna in 1477. The German's favoured the wood-cut method of engraving, and published an improved version of the Bologna atlas in Ulm in 1482. Later on, as information from the first explorers filtered back and leaked out, publishers began to add"Nova Tabulae" incorporating new discoveries and more accurate coastlines at the back of their Ptolomeic atlases. The first new map of Asia, for instance was put out by Waldseemuller around 1510. At auction here. Here Artist original clay sculpture is nearly ready for ... morethe foundry. Note the artist is still adding the finishing touches. Most sculptors prefer to work with clay or wax; some however. Do use wood and other mediums. Here the finished original clay is now complete. The sculptor will take it to the foundry now, get a bid then begin the first stages of the lost wax process. The first step can be shocking for some as they begin to decide how this original will be cut up. In order to prepare the original clay sculpture for molding. It will be dissected by cutting the clay with wire and by cutting the armature with a saw. The armature is what helped support the clay in place while the artist was creating it. Note the registration marks which later in the process will serve to realign the parts. Shown here are the sections of the original clay sculpture after having been dissected. Now the various parts of the original are carefully mounted on clay plugs before the rubber mold material is applied. The clay plug later serves as a pour spout for the mold. It was founded by a group of investors that included the famous Western actor. William(Hopalong Cassidy" Boyd. Boyd made frequent appearances at HOPPYLAND where he would encourage children to follow the"Hoppy Code of Conduct" The ticket is from an estate. It has been stored safely for decades. This auction is for an antique stereoview of the Bridge of Sighs at the Doge's Palace in Venice. Italy. It depicts the bridge over the canal which connects the Prison to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace. This was the last view of the outside world the convicts would see before they were imprisoned. This is a superb view of Venice. Italy and dates approx. 1865-1885. This is an original real photo stereoview. The photos are black and white images. The card caption reads; No. 1515. Bridge of Sighs. Venice. Italy. The pub. info on the back; Photographed and Published by Kilburn Brothers. Littleton, N.H. This is an interesting view and would be a great addition to any collection. It measures 6 7/8" x 3 3/8" It is in fairly good condition with some scuffs and wear. The edges show minor bumps and wear. The photo shows some fading and scuffs. The back shows light foxing. Scuffs and stains. It is slightly curved but that is normal for these cards. Stereoviews were the first attempt at 3-D photography. They were extremely popular at the end of the nineteenth century. They and were used for entertainment. News events, advertising and education. Some of the original stereograph photographers were not credited but many have become known as the best photographers of their time.

IL in operation from the 1920's to the 1950's. The chip has been lightly cleaned with a damp cloth to remove surface dirt and dust but they could be better cleaned by their new owner. I am including a link to The Chip Board for documentation on chips marked"JPC" which shows a copy of the chip order for this club from the manufacturing company Taylor&Co. Unfortunately documentation may not exist for the chip marked"HPC" with the 3 dot or Tri-ball rim mold. The orange chip marked"HPC" was made by the Joe Treyball Sporting Goods Co in St. Louis. MO They produced this chip ... morefrom 1929-1939 and records are not available for this manufacturer either. Just a brief account of how I acquired these chips: In 2002 I purchased a house in southwest Missouri. The previous owners were eldery. In their late 80's, and moving into a smaller residence. Due to the reduced size of their new home they sold many, many of their belongings to us when we purchased the house. When they moved they also left many boxes of misc items which they did not want to take with them. Included in these items were a large number of chips, dice and cards. This couple had lived and worked for decades in the St. Louis area and apparently the husband was a avid gambler. It makes sense that he would have made the short trip acroos the Mississippi River to gamble at the Hyde Park Club. There are some of the other chips found also listed on Ebay. This is the first chips that I collected and the ones that gave me the collecting bug! I will be added some of my extra chips to my listings in the next few weeks. Please look for them.
