Very archaic looking embossed pigskin binding over thick and heavy boards. With some loss, overall nicely kept; hinges intact and binding firm. One of two original metal clasps are present, beautifully designed. Large raised bands to spine, with light instance of loss and tearing to extremities. Exposure on the spine shows 14th to 15th century vellum manuscript binder's wastes used along spine for reinforcement when produced- a unique addition and pleasant attraction. Here is a nice German family bible printed in 1834 in Philadelphia. I struggled to definitively identify this family. But I think I have them figured out. The first page of family information is a marriage record from August 1805 for Jacob Bauman and Cristina Biebauns( The second page documents the couple's birthdates. Jacob Bauman was born 10 Oct 1784. Cristina was born 06 Jul 1775. Children Isaac, born 03 Nov 1813, and Rachel, born 05 Feb 1816, are noted on the second page, also. Many other children and grandchildren are noted on pages three and four. The last page documents the death's of these parents. Jacob died 19 July 1845 and Cristina died on 02 March 1847. I found a reference to a Jacob Baumann, born 11 Oct 1784, who was baptized at New Hanover Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Montgomery County on 14 Nov 1784. His sponsors ... morewere Henrich Shirm and wife Magdalena. Jacob was the son of Isaac and Susanna Baumann. The birth date is off by one day, so this is probably the husband. Isaac was noted in 1860 as being a“Shoemaker. The father and all of these children are listed on page 3. It seems this bible was passed on to Jacob and Cristina's son, Isaac. Up for auction is a beautifully bound Polyglott Bible. This is the English version of the Polyglott Bible containing the Old and New Testaments with the marginal readings. The Bible was published in 1860 by J. B. Lippencott& Co. It is beautifully bound in red leather with gold trim with an indent in both the front and the back. It measures 4 X 5 3/4" The leather is lightly scuffed along the edges and the corners and there is a spot on the back cover the size of a dime. The binding is very tight and there are no loose or missing pages. The Bible was presented to Mrs. M. F. Osborn by her father. The Old and New Testament Bible has a section on the History of the Books of the Bible; it has a dictionary of the Bible with over 400 engravings; it has a section on"Stories of the Bible for the young" with lots of illustrations. It has the Catholic apocryphal books between the Old and New Testament. In the center of the Bible there is a marriage certificate which is filled out and dated 1885 and a Family Record which is partially filled in. The Bible has a leather cover. Which is in poor condition. The Bible measures 12" by 9" and is 3.5" thick. The condition of the Bible is fragile. The pages are yellowed with edge roughness and tearing on some. HUGE antique family Bible **BLANK FAMILY PAGES** 13lbs.
Wish I could put more pictures on to show all the components included in this Bible! 2000 illustrations which are beautiful. Illustrations are still good. Sharp and clear(not faded like on many Bibles this old) I found no printing date but will place it in the 1880 to 1890 era. Measures 12 1/4" tall X 10 1/4" wide and 3 3/4" thick(each tooled leather cover is about 1/4" thick) 5 raised bands on spine. Leather is worn on corners of covers(top corner of front cover shows most wear) Bible opens and closes easily, hinges are solid. Binding is good and tight. TAKE IT TO CHURCH WITH YOU! There are about 20 pages in Leviticus that are stained(10th picture shows worst of it)looks to me like a leaf or plant was place there and the oils seeped. The stains decrease to just dots the further from what is pictured. All word are still ... morelegible. The only date I found was when it was given to the owner 1873. DAVID HALL gilded on front cover. The front hinge is frayed but still solid and the Bible opens and closes easily. Binding is tight. Latches together on the side with 2 fancy engraved nickel plated hinges, published by Isaac Hough No. 92 Pearl Street, Dr. Wm. Smith's standard bible dictionary, The King James and the Revised Version of the Old and New Testaments, arranged in parallel Columns. There is a presentation page as well as birth and death record but nothing has been recorded and photo album in the back for 10 photos, the edges of the pages are gold gilded.
