Charming Early 19th Century Silk Work& Watercolor Portrait of a Young Girl with Blue Hat Prev Stop Play Next Please supersize photos for best views& condition A very fine 19th century oval needlework portrait done with silk and watercolor painting. A charming scene of a little girl with curly blond hair. Dressed in a white dress with red sash and shoes. She is holding her blue hat in her lap and is attaching sheaves of grain to the band. The needlework is mounted on its original oval wood panel with a name etched in the wood There is a later typed label verso which reads"H. Berringer" I can clearly read the HB on the wood itself but it is more difficult to decipher the remaining letters. The silkwork is housed behind glass in a wide period gilt frame(which may or may not be original) The portrait is beautifully stitched ... moresilk on silk with well-painted watercolor face. Hands and arm. Framed. The needlework measures about 10" x 9" with a sight size or viewing area of about 6" x 5" Excellent overall antique condition; no losses to silk work or to painted portions. There are no losses or splits to the silk background although the sky background is age-darkened. The colors of the silk are fresh and vibrant. The frame is in good overall antique condition with the typical chips. Losses, etc. but has a great look and accents the needlework beautifully. Sheaves of wheat were used symbolically in needlework well into the 19th century. In addition to signifying abundance and prosperity. They also symbolized the gifts of God, His fullness and bounty. Biblical Jesus Mary Antique William IV Georgian Silkwork Needlwork Sampler 18thC Christian Subject Jesus Mary Joseph Donkey c1780-1820 This is a delightful antique silkwork embroidery dating to the turn of 18th and 19th centuries. It is English in origin and would either date to the reign of William IV or the George III. The work is a depiction of Christian interest- being biblical subjects. Presumably, the figures of Mary, Joseph and Jesus, with a Donkey. Antique textiles are particularly special due to their fragility and the social history or'herstory' that is behind them. In all likelihood this piece would have been created by a young lady as an accomplishment and'sensible' recreational activity to keep her focused on'ladylike' pursuits. It is in fair condition for its great age and still has some good colouring- ... moreand is clearly a quality work. But the material does have browning and wear and several tears and pulls. See photographs. It remains well housed in what appears to be its original frame- there may be marks but no breakages to speak of. When I look at the old needlework items. I am always reminded of the creativity limitations placed on women, and of the ways in which they still made masterpieces. Antique school sampler needlepoint 1834. There are some issues as shown in the many pics I took. But overall it is a wonderful piece. Measures 16 1/2" by 12" Framed it measures 20 3/4" by 16" note frame has the very old square nails in the wood. There is lots going on with this piece, lots of crowns, birds there is deer a dog trees and more. There is areas that have pulled apart a bit see pics. I can not make out the name but the date is 1834. If restored this would be a fantastic needle point school sampler as it is it still is nice. Frame is wood with glass front so sorry I did get some reflections when taking pics. I am not sure but this may be Dutch or Pennsylvania but not sure I am no expert on antique needlepoint. FABULOUS ANTIQUE PETIT POINT/NEEDLEPOINT SAMPLER - FRENCH -Silk & Wool
This is a fabulous example of an antique petit point and needlepoint tapestry- probably French. It is stitched in petit point with fine silk embroidery thread for faces and clothes of the man and lady pictured. Man is dressed in tricorn hat and red uniform and lady is in fancy dress and hat. Some of the flowers are also stitched in silk thread and the rest of the stitching is done with wool. Colors are soft and muted. Stitched area measures 13.5" x 18.5" It looks like it was framed in an oval frame at one time. I believe it dates from 1870s-90s- possibly earlier. Good condition- no holes or stains. This is the most beautiful tapestry or sampler! I believe it is from the late 1800's or early 1900's. The piece measures 43" by 26 1/2" The backing is a soft yet very sturdy jute or burlap type fabric that is hand hemmed along the back. Please look carefully at all the photos. Very nice antique Victorian punch paper moto sampler Home Sweet Home. It measures 24" x 12" x 1 1/2" Unusual period mating and deep shadow box type frame. The shingle backed frame appears to be mad of walnut or mahogany. There are some cuts to the white and gold period mating. I have not removed the back of the frame but the condition appears to be good with only some minor creases but no tears in the punch paper that I can see. The colors are bright. Vivid and rich. I also like the extra detail of flowers which I have never seen in these before they usually just contain the motto. Here is a true rarity: a 19th century American Cross-Stitch Sampler with Original Watercolor Painting featuring a Horse and Carriage and a lovely Colonial or Victorian Scene. This large and impressive piece comeS in it's original hand-carved walnut frame. The frame measures 19 1/2" tall and 16" wide. The sampler features a very detailed scene with a Victorian/Colonial looking lady being escorted off of the carriage by a young gentleman. The horse's driver. Complete with whip and hat, has his head slightly turned making sure the lady departs safely. There are 2 houses in the background, the larger and more detailed house features another classic chivalrous scene, with a gentleman with his top hat off greeting a young blonde lady. Overall one very detailed and well-done watercolor and combined with the cross-stitch Sampler ... morePoem you have one hard-to-find and well-preserved piece of Americana. This is surely a young lady's dual example of her prowess in the arts. I've personally never seen one quite like this in my 30+ years of collecting. The linen is in very good condition. With a little yellowing with age and a some light staining, which is only noticeable upon close inspection(mostly in the upper right hand corner, please don't be confused by the shadows that are cast off from the glass) There are also 2 loose threads that can be seen through the glass, about 1" long each and only millimeters thick as it's only two individual strands(possibly left in the frame as an example of the authenticity of the handmade workmanship. Or perhaps they came loose through time, since they could easily have been cut and not effected the piece in the slightest) Regardless this is truly a one-of-a-kind example of early Americana! I have been authorized to offer this antique 19th Century linen and wool sample that has 5 different embroidery examples of the alphabet. Several sayings and name and date. This sampler measures 22" X 21" actual size and framed is 24" X 26" These photos show the neatness and skill of the person doing the embroidery through the use of colors. Styling, stitched verses and excellent spacing skills. Samplers were the equivalent of a final test in school for the girls at that time. This sampler is in excellent physical condition in that there are no frayed edges or loose or missing threads in the stitching. You can see in photo 4 where it has been folded and put away. Very Nice Early 19th century Child's Sampler! This is a great sampler that measures 18" tall and 9" wide. The alphabet starts at the top with various letters beneath followed by some trees and baskets with a cross at the bottom and reference to Jesus to the right. Someone wrote out the words on the back. Beautiful antique punch paper sampler made in the victorian time. This sampler is in really nice shape. Original old frame, wavy and bubbly glass. It retains it's original old backing, that has the word paint painted on it, it was most likely taken from a paint crate. The piece is very rare as it is done in french and says Pensez A Moi, or Think of Me. It is in great shape with only some faint staining. Framed cross stitch beautiful colors fabulous& unique scene on front. turn it over and on the back in pencil it is written. These were made by Dorothy Jane Stine Uber" A very dear friend of mine. She died in 1944. I found her grave she only lives to be 28 years old. She was born in 1916. She was a very talented young woman that lost her life decades too early. Obviously the person/people she made this sampler for loved her very much and treasured their friendship. I only assume they too must gone too. The little one was with the bigger one. Kate Christie was born in Scotland and attended Granton Public School there. Granton is a district in northern Edinburgh. Scotland. The 1891 census(same year she stitched her sampler) has 13 year old Kate Christie living in Granton, Scotland with her mother Mary Wilson, step father Robert Wilson, and her three brothers John, James(a twin) and Robert Christie. THIS CAME FROM A LONG TIME COLLECTORS ESTATE OF AMERICANA IN NEW HAMPSHIRE. A TRUE NEW ENGLAND ANTIQUE SAMPLER. IT HAS SOME MINOR LOSS TO THE LETTERS ACROSS THE TOP AND A SMALL HOLE IN THE CENTER. JOHN HARTWELL WAS ONE OF THE EARLY SETTLERS OF PIERMONT NEW HAMPSHIRE HE ARRIVED WITHOUT FAMILY AND THEY BATTLED"UNUSUAL" HARDSHIPS WITH WOLVES WHILE TRYING TO SETTLE IN THE AREA. HE DIED JULY 2 1833 OF A LIGHTNING STRIKE.
