You are viewing a rare and unique Pennsylvania German manuscript Bible record for the Groff family of Lancaster County. PA This page was removed years ago from a Bible and then mounted to cardboard with staples(see scan) The overall damage from the staples is minimal since they can be removed rather easily( had it been idiot Scotch Tape, the acid would have ruined the paper) The good news is that the inscription is intact, and that the records may prove invaluable to someone descended from this old illustrious Mennonite family. It has been suggested that perhaps Marcus is the father of the others, since there is such a time span between him and the rest: he was old enough to start making babies in the 1770s, but this is just a suggestion, since many of these old Mennonites ran through several wives. In any case, here is genealogical information not found anywhere else and it looks as though the original family Bible may be destroyed. RARE.

Family records for the Low family of Squiretown, Cowpits, and Craighall, written on blank sides of end of OT as well as on the page opposite of the beginning of the Apocrypha, dating from the early to mid 1700s. Condition is fair, the important thing is the fact that John and his family were amoung the first settlers of this area of Bradford Co. John' was born in 1801 and was married 3 times. Heverly- Pages 185-186 Irvine(originally Irwin)John Irvine. A Scotchman, emigrated to this country with his parents and settled near Milton, Pa. where he owned a farm. During the Revolutionary war, anticipating the move of the British and Indians, Mr. Irvine loaded his goods in canoes and passed down the ... moreriver with his family into Cumberland county for safety. While here he died, the family moving back to their old home after the troubles were over. John Irvine was three times married, having children by each wife, 22 in all. Three of his sons. Andrew, George and Welch came to Bradford county. Andrew Irvine. The eldest son of John by his third marriage, was born May 28, 1789 in Northumberland county. In 1812 he and his brother Guy C. returning from the war, passed through Towanda. The place at that time was more remarkable for three streams of water running through it than anything else it possessed. The center stream caught the eye of Andrew as the spot to locate a tannery. Accordingly, he purchased a half-acre of ground of William Means and erected a 2 1/2-story log house thereon. In the upper room, he cooked his meals and slept using the lower room for a shop. Mr. Irvine's lot extended from one door south of where M. E. Rosenfield's store now is to Patton's block. His log house stood about 35 feet below Main street back of the Tidd Hotel. Pages browned, chipped in places, some with stains and light loss, missing a scattered leaf here and there, also lacking all after Revelation XIX, however retaining both title pages. Various inscriptions from the Davis family in front and in the rear, starting with Sherwood Davis, a probate clerk in GA, TN and MS. It seems this Bible was active in Sherwood and his childrens lives while they resided in GA, as his son Charles A Davis noted in front. Pennsylvania German / Dutch Family Bible. Fraktur
Wonderful Bible printed in German in Philadelphia. Probably in the 1870s. It is 11.5" x 9.5" x 2.5" It is all intact except for the front cover and first few pages being loose. It was owned by the family of Joseph Wert and Mary Ann Jacob, who were married in 1862. This family lived in Lehigh County, PA. There are three pages with fabulous fraktur work of family information. Two letters came with this bible, as well. Own this wonderful piece documenting Pennsylvania Dutch/German history and artistry.

Collectors this is a true antique. Copyright 1903.It is a Holman Bible, King James version. It features the Hoffman Gallery of New Testament illustrations in both color and black and white. It is huge 12 3/4 X 10 X 3 1/2 inches. It is well worn and fragile as explained above. The owner says sell it. You might find it attractive sitting on a coffee table or similarly displayed, after all it is an antique. One of the main reasons I am listing this is if by chance a descendant would happen upon this listing. These"Century Bibles" were also used to record important family matters. During the Revolutionary War. Thomas moved his presses to Worcester, Massachusetts. There, in 1791, Isaiah Thomas published the first illustrated Bibles printed in America. This particular specimen is in acceptable shape. And comes with 2 cover and spine choices, all are as shown. This is also rare multi-language version which includes German from the late 1880s which is growing quite scarce in the market. This sample is an interesting specimen that contains all the necessary examples when the salesman needed them for influence on his customers. Showing well its age for the use it has probably seen. The covers are the original binding, with some slight wear on the extremities, else in good shape on the outside. The binding within stays fluent, with all pages bound and the hinges intact. Overall the pages remain in good shape. The Bible has also retained the original order forms, with many names filled in from customers from Tennessee and Arkansas. Additionally included are family pages, which were filled in from the early 1800s through the mid 1900s for the Price and Jones family from VA, TN and Arkansas, see below. For as early as during the reign of Canute the Dane, about the year 1000 to 1100 we learn that a colony of that name came from Germany and settled in England, forming a town called to this day by the name of Breed. Self-pronouncing, dictionary-concordance and beautiful illustrations with colored paintings. A bible of outstanding help, inspiration and strength. None of the pages have written on, nothing has been filled in. The book binding is very much like leather(it may possibly be leather) and a bright blue. There are a few boogers on the top edge of the spine but the spine is nice and tight. It does have the Masons emblem on the lower lf\eft corner front. It is in beautiful shape for its age. 11 3/4" long, 9 1/2" wide, 2 3/4" deep. It does weigh quite a bit, right at 8 pounds. Please see my other auctions.
