This 259 year old bible is fresh from a Pawtuxet. Rhode Island house that decedents of the Arnold family had been living in since the 18th century. The bible printed in Edinburgh in 1755 originally belonged to Oliver& Susanna Potter Arnold. The Arnold's were among of the first families to settle Newport, Rhode Island and were also among of the first families to settle Pawtuxet, Rhode Island. This is a typical mid 18th century bible, however, this bible contains the family history of the Arnold family starting with the marriage of Oliver Arnold to Susanna Potter their first son Stephen being born September 3rd 1864 to the birth of Orace Arnold on December 22nd 1791. Most of the family history is written on the back of the New Testament title page. Stranded May 3- 1816 on the Island of Abico( This Island is probably the chain of Abaco Islands in the Bahamas. A popular trade route at the time. In fact, the Bible is quite waterstained, perhaps carrying a one of a kind tale between its covers that links back to a young sailor with the surname of Purinton, a well know family line in Maine, linked into Revolutionary War veterans, early New England settlers, maritime workers and religious figures. There are a few family entries, one being Humphrey ... morePurinton born in 1791, the next entry a James P Purinton, born in 1823, and an Isaac Purinton, date unknown. Humphrey was the son of Deacon Humphrey Purinton(m Thankful Snow) a Revolutionary War veteran, the son of Colonel Nathaniel Purinton, also a noted Rev War vet. James P. and Isaac were both sons of the Humphrey noted in the Bible. Although no records exist for the Brig Eliza, I would deduct by the matching handwriting that Humphrey(b1791) was the sailor who was the stranded sailor mentioned on the first leaf. MASSIVE.measures 12 1/2" tall X 10 5/8" wide and 5 1/4" thick. Each leather cover is about 1/4" thick. Weighs about 20lbs. Family pages(MARRIAGES, BIRTHS, DEATHS, MISCELLANEOUS MEMORANDA) are all blank. The very first blank page has the name Mrs. Elizabeth Page dated Jan, 22, 1922 hand written on it. The bottom of spine has J. and E. Page gilted on it. 5 raised bands on spine. Many beautiful and unique illustrations. Two pages in the front are starting to detach(6th picture) otherwise structurally sound. Covers are well attached, no splits in hinges and Bible opens and closes easily. Binding is in good condition. This is a true piece of Americana and early history. This Bible served as a door-to-door assistant that was used by salesman to piece together custom Bibles for customers. This comes with multiple choices for content. Covers, numerous sections, photo holders, plates, inclusions, sections& more. it is amazingly filled with examples and choices for illustrations- B&W, gold trimmed, color-everything you could expect from these large thickly elaborate bibles of the late 1800s that a customer might want, including many Dore plates. This particular specimen is in acceptable shape. And comes with 4 cover and 2 spine choices, all are as shown. An interesting specimen that contains ... moreall the necessary examples when the salesman needed them for influence on his customers. Showing well its age for the use it has probably seen. The covers are the original binding, with some slight wear on the extremities, else in good shape on the outside. The binding within stays fluent, with all pages bound and the hinges intact. Overall the pages remain in good shape. The Bible has also retained the original order forms, unused. Additionally included are family pages, also unused. A few small stains. As well as some slight water damage, and a quaint scent are the only flaws. Truly a fascinating piece of Victorian era Americana. This roughly measures 11.5" wide. 13.5" tall and 2.25" thick. This is a whopper of a Bible at 1300+ pages. This Bible has a full family record in it for a Holmes family. 1872. Produced by The American Bible Society. The spine is still solid. But without care, it may break soon. The first 20 pages or so do have a water-stain, but the rest of the Bible does not. The 2 genealogy pages are taped together and one is loose. The vintage bookmark came with the Bible and I will include it with the Bible upon purchase. Helen G Holmes. March 21, 1874 written on the first blank page. There are no creases in the front or back cover. There is wear along the hinges and edges of the spine. No highlighting or underlining. Pages are as expected. Here are some bible pages done by the noted artist John Heller. I have owned birth/baptism certificates(BBC) done by Heller and was familiar with his amazing talents. But. this is the first set of bible pages I have seen done by him and they just blow away what he typically does on a BBC. The only other artist/scrivener that I feel is in the same league with Heller is August Baumann. There are four generations of information given on these pages. Adam. The father, is noted in the 1900 census of Eldred Township to be a“Laborer(brick-works) Barnet Frantz, Adams's father, in the 1880 census of Eldred Township is noted to be a farmer and Adam as“Farm work. Here is an amazing German family bible printed in 1880 in Philadelphia. The family information was done by the noted scrivener and artist. G.A.S. Hainbach and is simply exquisite. It remains intact, but the first few pages and the family history pages are loose. Also one side of the outside cover along the side is loose. This is probably the second most impressive work I have seen in a family bible, only behind one done by August Baumann. It also has a church membership certificate for the father of this family. This is the family bible of Dr. Franklin Holben and Mary(Walbert) Holben. This family shows up in the 1900 census of Lowhill Township which lists, Frank Holben(born Aug. 1868) Mary A. born Sept. 1863) Estella(born Aug. 1886) Pearl(born May 1890) Arthur(born April 1893) and Perma(Niece, born Jan. 1895) Frank’s occupation is“Landlord& ... moreM.D” The family moved and is shown in the 1920 census of North Whitehall Township which lists just the parents, Franklin J. Holben(age 50) Alice W. age 54) and a servant. Franklin is noted to be a“Doctor” in“Medicine. Franklin Jonas Holben is listed in the Directory of Deceased American Physicians, 1804-1929. His death date is 30 Nov 1924. He attended the Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York, graduating in 1889. The bible measures 12.5 by 10 by 4 inches. This HARDBACK antique bible is beautifully illustrated with black and white lithographs. Around 190 lithographs in total- 150 In Old testament; 40 in New testament. Published in Sweden by Fosterlandets Forlag in 1805. 1895 or 1905(can't determine because print is faded) Contains the full old and new testament books in Swedish. The illustrated pages are in good condition. As is the text. The pages have aged beautifully, giving the bible an added charm(please see pictures) PLEASE NOTE: Due to it's age the bible is in a delicate condition. The binding holding the pages together is relatively strong. With a few loose pages at the front of the book. The front of the bible says: AUNT POLLY'S BIBLE BURDETT The first birth recorded is Hester SUTHARD(SOUTHARD) born Feb of 1762. It took me a bit. But I THINK she is the Hester SIEMON whose death is recorded as 1838 in her 77th year. There are other intermarriages with BURDETT and ABBOTT with SIEMON in the bible. The next entry is for the birth of John FREELAND fourth of July 1788. He married Mary KIPP in 1812 and her birth in 1791 is also recorded. Mary used a popular nickname POLLY and she is one and the same as Mary KIPP. Lots ... moreof scans of the pages. There are 4 pages or sides of the original bible and then one page added in 1904. Antique 1800's Family Bible ~ Needs TLC
This is an 1800's family bible. I can't make out the whole date. Just 18? It is worn and needs to be repaired. Spine is coming off, it is missing part of the clasp, a couple of pages are folded over and a couple of pages are loose and not attached to the bible. Measures approx. 10" by 13" outside brown is coming off, and your hands get dirty touching it. I used gloves. Bible belonged to Eva Cora( Zellner) Kenny. It lists her death in 1942, and there are pressed flowers in it on that page, that probably were from the funeral. There was one picture in the back that may be the owner as a child. Photo isn't marked. Look at the pictures to see the condition.

The cover is black with a cross embossed on front and back. Wear to cover(please see pictures! Pages are in pretty good condition. Minor tears throughout. No markings except on the family record pages that I can find. Pages are very very thin and delicate. As seen in the pictures the ink from one page can be seen through another. I can't find a date of publication. But the latest printed date I can find is 1911. The family record has the births of the owners in the late-1800's. Includes various ephemera including a card with a print of Joseph and Mary. A bookmark, and two obituary clips. This is just what I have found, I don't know if there is more hidden inside. The bible is quite large measuring app. 9½" by 15¼" The book is hard bound with leather covered covers.
