Antique Cross Stitch Child's Alphabet Needlework Sampler
Vintage Needlework Sampler This is a sweet little child's sampler done in black. Beige and red on a natural linen ground. It has both an upper case and a lower cast alphabet, and the numbers 1-4. She fitted the numbers in where she could- 1,2,3 are located after the upper case alphabet, and the 4 is at the bottom. There is a black border surrounding the whole piece, and beige stitched lines between the lines of letters. It is covered in clear plastic which is taped to a piece of cardboard to hold it in place and to protect it from dirt. It was photographed with this on it- I have not attempted to remove it- any shine or discoloration you see is due to reflection. There are a couple of things to mention- there is very pale minor staining above the C in the first line(picture 4) and some tiny moth holes at the t at the bottom. The sampler was completed Feb 12, 1818, by Grace Wilson aged 13. It has a lovely stitched border in golds and green and two main art areas, the top with small animals topped by a garland of flowers, leaves, ribbons and bows. Dated March 20th 1845. The piece features three examples of the English alphabet on the upper work. Below this is the girl's name and date of the finished work. The bottom half of the piece depicts a forest scene, with small animals, plants, and a floral motif. We do not know Elizabeth Ann McElwee's exact age at the time this sampler was done. The colours have remained fairly bright, considering its great age( 267 years! although the yellow has faded somewhat. It is in a period frame, although it may not be original to the sampler. 1830 ANTIQUE SEED GLASS BEADED SAMPLER SACRED HEART FRANCE ROSES GILT FRAME
I know I took an odd assortment of photos. But please take a look at them. What I was trying to capture is gold sparkles which I can see in certain light, and angles which just has a Heavenly sparkle. I think this was embroidered either using a gold thread or it is embroidered on gold fabric. The light also reflects off the beads which add to its luminosity and sparkle. This is truly a rare and beautiful piece of art. It is obviously French in origin because fait par is French for made by. It has the Sacred Heart of Jesus surmounted by the cross and surrounded by roses. It is marked 1830. The beads are so teeny tiny. I must say that I am a lover of antique beads. The antique glass is most beautiful. This was a wonderful dedication of love, a religious work for the glory and honor of God. The frame measures 10.75 inches square. The frame itself ... moreis a weighty thing and the gold has such a soft buttery looking patina, more bright gold in some places and darker in others. I believe the back is covered in silk. It is so tightly closed that I am afraid to open it and take out the actual cloth. ANTIQUE SAMPLER A MARTIN 1845
A beautiful sampler stitched by A Martin in 1845. Hemmed on all four sides. This cotton and linen sampler features upper and lower case alphabets and numbers separated by a variety of horizontal bands. Beneath these are two floral/fruit baskets and a pair of dogs. Miss Martin stitched her first initial and last name as well as“apr 1845” at the bottom above a lovely spray of flowers. A needle and thread were added to the bottom but the thread does not match those used in the sampler so I can’t say for sure that this was the needle used to stitch the sampler. I will leave it as is, however, and the buyer can decide what to do with it. Stitches used in this sampler are predominantly cross stitch. But the horizontal bands include double cross, four-sided, eyelet and Queen stitches. The thread colors are ivory. Tan, light brown, blue, green, and ... morepink and have faded to soft, lovely hues. The threads are cotton, other than the tiny pink flower bud in the lower left corner and the small row of stitches above the lowercase b, c, and d, which are done in silk. The pink threads in Miss Martin’s name as well as the flowers appear to have been tinted from the front as they are tan when viewed from the backside. Linen has slight age related discoloration. There are a few small holes to the linen, the largest being just to the right of the“ in the third row and one at the very bottom where the needle is inserted. Please see all pictures. The sampler measures 16”h x 7.75”w. When I acquired this sampler I was told by the seller that it was a southern Virginia sampler that was passed down from Caroline Cauldwell Foote to her granddaughter. Sandra Speiden. Biblical Jesus Mary Antique William IV Georgian Silkwork Needlwork Sampler 18thC Christian Subject Jesus Mary Joseph Donkey c1780-1820 This is a delightful antique silkwork embroidery dating to the turn of 18th and 19th centuries. It is English in origin and would either date to the reign of William IV or the George III. The work is a depiction of Christian interest- being biblical subjects. Presumably, the figures of Mary, Joseph and Jesus, with a Donkey. Antique textiles are particularly special due to their fragility and the social history or'herstory' that is behind them. In all likelihood this piece would have been created by a young lady as an accomplishment and'sensible' recreational activity to keep her focused on'ladylike' pursuits. It is in fair condition for its great age and still has some good colouring- ... moreand is clearly a quality work. But the material does have browning and wear and several tears and pulls. See photographs. It remains well housed in what appears to be its original frame- there may be marks but no breakages to speak of. Antique 1800s German punch paper framed folk art. Has Psalms 37:5" Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him. And he will act. written in German with metallic and various other threads. With celluloid angel and dried flower decoration. Piece measurement including frame is 21" tall x 16 3/4" wide. Frame is wooden edged with gold gilt paint with interior gold toned metal frame. Frame has some cracking in the paint and patina wear to the metal. Punch paper inside has some a water spot on the matting in one corner, and general age coloration to the mat. Punch paper itself has one water drip line at the top. Celluloid angel has some white spotting from age. Thread and flowers are all in tact and not loose. This antique sampler came from a farm auction in Southern Illinois approx 20 yrs ago. I have moved and down sized to a smaller home and am listing this piece. I do not know what language it is in. But I do know the early settlers of the farm community were German. I have forgotten the name of the family where the auction was held. Description: Antique paper punched sampler in painted gesso and wood frame. Measures 18 1/2 inches by 14 1/2 inches. Has areas of thread loss in some of the lettering and nicks in the gesso through out. Water stain at bottom. Still a wonderful piece of history and charm. Antique 1821 Linen And Silk Child's Sampler
I'm offering for your consideration an antique 1821 embroidered silk on linen child's sampler. Signed Mary T. Clarke, age 8. This early sampler measures 10"3/4 x 12"1/2 and without frame is 9"3/4 x 11"1/2; it is detailed with letters, trees, flowers and birds and has a verse in the middle which reads: Engage this frail and wavering heart Wisely to choose the better part To scorn the trifles of a day For joys that never fade away" There are some condition issues: the frame is newer, 1/2 inch square size hole on the bottom right side and some small looses( holes) in the middle. As well as alongside the border, the verse is faded and hard to read. Overall. Still a very nice early example, considering the age. Please refer to pictures. This piece should truly be in a musuem. There are two sew fron to back with the drawsting closure that would attach to two buttons under the dress. The front is all hand emboidered. THey measure 10" x 9 1/2" A history of pockets Wearing pockets In the 17th century. Most women had at least one pair of pockets, which served a similar purpose as a handbag does today. There are no pockets visible on this woman's ensemble of 1760. They were usually worn underneath their petticoats. by the 1840's pockets ... morewere sew into outfits. Double pockets like this one(front to back) were the earlier used in the 17th and 18th Centuries. This piece is beautiuflly hand embroidered on hand woven cloth which appears to be some sort of cotton matterial. Often woman/girls would carries a hankie, a coin, mirror, watch, keys, needlecase and oranges in there Pocket.Many pockets were handmade and they were often given as gifts. Some were made to match a petticoat or waistcoat. Some were made over from old clothes or textiles. Mother's often taught their daughters how to sew. And the sewing pocket was a good project to teach their daughters the valued skill of sewing, and of course the little girls loved wearing a sewing pocket just like their mother. My feeling is that this piece may have been embroidered by a child as it is a simple piece and is not done by the most skilled hand. The styling is very folk art and is typical of the 17th century to early 18th century. Antique 1890s-early1900s Hand Crochet Lace Sampler Fabric Book Collectibl Gift
These antique intricate and fine quality hand crocheted lace samples. Sewn into a rose colored cloth book, date to the late 1800s-early 1900s. In those days, samples of hand crochet stitches were saved as reference-or to share. There are 123 samples sewn onto 31 pages in this book. The opposite page of each sample page is blank- maybe to protect the lace samples. This is obviously the work of a productive expert in the art of crochet. Every piece is exquisite and precise- from the 1/2" wide edging to the elaborate 7 1/2" wide lace. The various styles including Irish and filet are interesting and give insight on the beautiful and at times complicated trims used for linens, doilies, clothes, etc. This lady no doubt had some gorgeous heirloom items. She was a British lady, mother of the person my sister got this book from- at an estate ... moresale in the 1960s. The book measures about 8 3/4" X 5 1/2" X 1 1/2" The beauty of each sample page made it hard to decide which to photograph. The samples are varying shades of white and ecru which have darkened over the years. There are spots on a few. All of the crochet seems to be intact. The sample on the lower rt. of photo#5 has what appears to be a loose thread rt. lower edge. The crochet sample on the last page is loose-it was never attached to the fabric. The outside back cover has a stain-photo#12. The front cover has no stains. I didn't include it because I wanted to have as many photos of the crochet as possible. I will send additional photos if needed. Considering the age of the samples. They are in very good to excellent condition. My 86 y.o. sister has enjoyed and stored this treasure of crochet history in her smoke free home since the 60s. I am listing many items for her as she finds new homes for her collectibles. Inside picture area measures 9 1/2" x 7 1/2" with the frame at 13 3/4" x 12 7/8" Sampler says HAPPY DAYS MAKE A HAPPY YEAR. It has some minor sun spots, but otherwise, in very nice shape. The frame is aged, with a few of the leaves having the tips missing, but is very solid, and actually deep, at over 1 5/16" thick. A young Quaker girl of only ten or eleven years, stitched her lovely sampler in 1811 and, in an unusual addition, included family initials AND the names of both maternal and paternal grandparents: Mary and Thomas Cheyney and Hannah and Richard Jones. Ella's sampler is well composed and balanced with several alphabets worked in black and extensivc use of borders stitched predominantly in green; i.e. A four-sided sawtooth outer border, two horizontal sawtooth borders that enclose her lower case"Quaker alphabet" a decorative border between her alphabets and her family& signature ... moreinformation, and a double sawtooth border between the family information and her signature line.
