Amateur mathematician, meteorologist and astronomer, with an interest in bookplates, chess and recreational ... moremathematics, Eugène Strens was born in 1899 in Roermond in southern Netherlands. He was broadly educated in the Sciences and Humanities, eventually studying Electrical Engineering at the Delft Technische Hogeschool. He completed his studies after two years of military service but pursued his profession for only a short while being of independent means and having very wide ranging interests. He went underground in 1943 and concentrated on math puzzles. From 1945 on he lived in Breda, Netherlands where he died in 1980. He was a friend of the mathematical artist Maurits Escher from whom he commissioned many works; he also maintained an active correspondence with fellow aficionados in all his areas of interest. He collected over eleven hundred books on chess, a hundred thousand Ex Libris(bookplates) a substantial collection of graphic art; over 2000 volumes on recreational mathematics as well as newspaper clippings, periodicals and manuscripts.

2 Vintage Disney Prints Mickey Minnie Gondola Venice & Mickey Surfing
This is a Framed Pair of Color Vintage Disney Prints. Circa 1932. One print is"ON THE GRAND CANAL" with Mickey acting as Gondolier for Minnie on Venice's Grand Canal. The other is Mickey Surfing. In the latter. It appears that his surfing companion, Pluto, has just wiped out as seen the lower right corner. The prints are offset printing. And you can see the dots. I removed the Grand Canal to examine the back. The back has 1932 handwritten in pencil in the margin. This is an older style Mickey drawing and I think that date attribution is probably correct. The back of the colored Gondola print is the identical surfer scene but NOT in color. I do not know for sure, but my conclusion based on that fact, the coarse paper, and one ragged edge is that these are pages from a paint, coloring, or activity book where the colored page served ... moreas an example for a child of how to paint or color the black and white page. These two prints have a wonderful look of age and they are charming examples of the earlier Mickey style! The black metal frames are each 10" x 8 1/4" and the prints are just slightly smaller than that. On the Grand Canal print the black cardboard stand backing was sticking out just a little due to not quite fitting under the lip of the frame at the other end. And I was not able to correct this issue when I replace the print. The print is also backed with two additional thin cardboard sheets that clearly are not acid-free/ archival material. These are inexpensive frames, and these prints deserve to be properly matted and re-framed. PLEASE NOTE: The shipping charge is based on shipping prints as seen with the frames and glass. Even if you want to reframe in relatively inexpensive frames. You could probably reframe(exclusive of the cost of mattes) for not too much more than the shipping charges. Orient was introduced in 1904, and made for about 12 years after that. The design is a rich, lush Art Nouveau border of poppies. Orient is also known as Venice, and is found with the backstamp of Holmes& Edwards, Rockford, and Stratford. It is a pattern which is currently enjoying a revival. The fruit spoon comes to us with many names. Originally they were called orange spoons, and there was a whole technique for eating an orange. You cut a circle near the top of the orange, hold it in your hand, and scoop out the ... morepulp with the orange spoon. Then when grapefruit were invented in the 1920s, the piece became the grapefruit spoon. A variation has serrated edges to make cutting into the grapefruit work better. Old catalogs call them just the fruit spoon, designed for scooping out the fruit and leaving the husk/ rind/peel. Today, the fruit spoon works excellently with baked whole fruit, compotes or melons. An excellent dessert, and an easy one to make, is half a cantaloupe with seed scooped out, the hollow filled with raspberry sherbet. The 2 orange/fruit spoons offered here measure about 5 3/4. These are not pieces of new silver. These items show the patina of almost 100 years of careful use. There are the light scratches which constitute normal patina. There is no monogram. Silver is softly lustrous. There is no silver loss except for a tiny heel dot and a small place in the bowl on one of the spoons. The pattern is crisp and clear.
