After the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on 28th February 2013, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was chosen by the conclave to be the new Pope on the 13th March 2013. He was elected on the fifth ballot during the second day of the papal conclave. He took the papal name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. Francis is the first pope originating from south America and the first Jesuit Pope.

Pope Francis, formerly Jorge Mario Bergoglio completed his theological studies in 1967 and was ordained as a priest on the 13th of December 1969. On the 31st of July 1973 He was named as Provincial Superior of the Society of Jesus in Argentina and served in this office until 1979. Later he was named as the rector of the Philosophical and Theological Faculty of San Miguel.

In 1992, Bergoglio was named as the Auxiliary Bishop of Buenos Aires and he was ordained as Titular Bishop of Auca, with Cardinal Antonio Quarracino in the same year. In 1997 he was appointed as Coadjutor Archbishop of Buenos Aires. In 1998 he was appointed as  Metropolitan Archbishop of Buenos Aires following the death of Quarracino.

In February 2001Bergoglio was made cardinal by Pope John Paul II with the title of cardinal priest of San Roberto Bellarmino. When serving as a cardinal he was appointed to five administrative positions in the Roman Curia. He was a member of the Congregation for the Clergy, the Pontifical Council for the Family, the Commission for Latin America, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the and the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.
